This video will show you how to set the forms for a concrete pool deck. This is Part 1 of 2. Part 2 will show you how to pour and finish the pool deck. This is a kidney shaped pool. Forming around a pool with a lot of curves has some challenges. Using forms that are rigid but will still curve easily is one challenge. I use Azek PVC trim boards for my curved forms. These forms are strong but curve very nicely. Most of the time when I form around a kidney shaped pool, my customers want to mimic the shape of the pool with the concrete deck. This pool we did that on two of the sides, the other two sides were straight so we could follow along the retaining walls. I set the forms an inch below the pool height so the concrete deck would shed water away from the pool and not into it. I install dozens of concrete pool decks per year, some have curves like this one and some are rectangular. Installing the forms, setting the grades, laying wire mesh, and the final prep work is what you will learn from watching this video. Enjoy!

Hey Mike, I’m a journeyman electrician, the ground wire is actually an equipotential bond not for lightning. Basically it will carry stray current away from a faulty pump or light.🤙

Living and working in south Florida, I’ve worked on more than a few pool decks. Pools here are almost always shot in with gunite then the coping, then form to that. The most stringent reg for pool decks here is a slope of 3” in the first 10 feet heading away from the pool (obviously). It’s totally non-negotiable. And the grounding of all railing and metal, of course. I guess my finishers are a bunch of baby’s! If I told them we were going to wheelbarrow that, they would look at me like I was crazy 😂. They would insist on a 2” pump and a pea-rock pump mix. If not a boom pump 🙄. 🤜🤛

We don't like to wheel barrow either. Just a little less expensive on this job. We don't have any regulations in Maine for pool decks except for grounding them. It's a 50-50 mix between gunite and vinyl pools here. We do a hand full of Z-Poolforms concrete copings. More and more pools are going that way instead of the fiberglass coping like this pool has.

I have watched several of your videos Mike, GREAT Work. It's obvious why you are busy all the time. I build but don't usually pour too much concrete, best leave it to you guys, the Pros. I did poor my own Pool apron approx. 23 yrs ago, on our 20' x 40' w a 5' apron to walk around it on, and a 40' x 12' patio area on one side of the pool. We did some fancy curves into it. I used Masonite clapboard siding to make the curves 1/2" x 6" clapboards. They don't crack keep a good form but need quite a bit of stakes behind it to hold the crete in. We used the wire and the Fiberglass? Fibermesh? mixed into the concrete at the pit. Believe it or not we have not had one crack in 23 years. I used a gas tamper to tamp the ground down several days before we poured. Your looks awesome, Love the finish.. Also watched your stamping patios, wow that's sharp looking. Nice you got to bring your daughters in to help out and learn the family business. They worked better than most guys do. I applaud you all. Stay Positive Stay Healthy my friend. Peace from Big Jim in New Hampshire... Amen

Hi Mike, love watching your videos. I’ve been in the pool business for 36 years and a little trick we use for the hand rails is a PVC jig. Start by cutting two pieces of 1-1/2” pvc pipe 12” long or so, get two 1-1/2” pvc schedule 40 pressure tees (if you use pressure fittings versus drain fittings they have a deeper glue area for better strength), we like using tees instead of elbows so you can lay a plumbers level across it if you want (we eyeball it when we are pouring). Glue one tee on each of the pipes (legs) using the pass through holes, then cut a piece of 1-1/2” pipe approximately 6” long (this will be the horizontal piece of the jig, you may have to take a little off or add a little to this piece to make sure you end up at 8” on center with your two legs) glue this piece into the base holes of the two tees creating a U shape jig. No need to support it, just pour around it and adjust it as need be as the concrete sets up. Much easier than trying to support a handrail. Another little trick that I’m sure you know is to make sure you put a piece of duct tape on the bottom of the ladder/handrail cups so that concrete doesn’t ooze up into them through the small holes when pouring. Also if any of your pools are equipped with an in-the-wall ladder you can build a dual jig to hold all four cups at once; makes it much easier then trying to support two hand rails at once. Hope you find this helpful.

Hi, Mike! I’m a retired electrician so the only thing I know about concrete work is…always hire it done! :-))) The reason I checked you out because I wanted to know how my pool deck was formed and poured. Why? I was upgrading to a color changing LED pool light, and the worst possible thing happened. While using the old electrical cord to pull in a jet-line the three wires in the cord actually broke. Hmm. The cord full length including the 6’ wrapped around the wet niche fixture was only 32’. No problem, right? I grabbed a fish tape…and buried 100’ in the conduit! Trying to pull it out, the tape is stuck. My thought is a separated conduit. Digging under the deck to find the conduit it seems I’ve found about a 12” footing following the curve of the decking about 1’ in from the edge, which puts the bottom about 16” from the pool deck surface. Have you ever seen anything like this? Yes or no answer would be greatly appreciated…so when I break out the dynamite I know I’ll have a chance at finding that conduit. Thanks, Mike!

Most all the pools we do have 4' aluminum panels set on the ground, then locked in with concrete at the base of them. Then backfilled and we pour a 4" thick concrete deck.

What is your basic rule of thumb for pin/stake length vs. form height? i.e. 4” form takes a 12” pin
@psidvicious
@psidvicious 4 года назад
Depends a lot on the soil conditions. If it’s a hard, clay-like soil, 12” stakes might do it but if it’s a softer, sandy soil they should probably be around 16-24”, for a 2x4 form. Staked off about every 2 feet. 🤜🤛
@MikeDayConcrete
@MikeDayConcrete 4 года назад
Yes psidvicious is right. I only have 18", 24", and 30" metal stakes so we use them on all our forming jobs. This one had good compaction so we could mainly use the 18" ones. I've never used 12". I put them 2, 3, or 4 feet apart depending on how compacted the gravel is.
