Concrete rejected-Load was too wet!

Join the concrete crew as we remove an old asphalt driveway and replace it with a new poured concrete driveway. It was a nice day for a concrete pour and everything went well except for the second truck of the first pour. It showed up very wet and I ended up having to send it back and have a new truck loaded. That is something that is so rare that I haven't seen it happen in at least 15 years. We were lucky the weather was right and it really didn't hurt us too much, other than delaying us about half an hour.
When you pour concrete it always seems like if something can go wrong it usually does. I guess that is why I like the challenge of concrete work, it's always a battle and we always win. That is one of the reasons why I named the business Victory! Enjoy.

It's really nice to see drivers like yourself. a local company near me that we normally order from (a university), the drivers always are super awesome and jump out of the truck to teach us kids some things. We need more people who want to help teach the next generation to fill their spots. And for me, now I have knowledge I ride with for the rest of my life. (in the US, the concrete trucks pour from the back and not the front, so the need for more hand signals is a must, which is what I'm referring to when it comes to knowledge--truck drivers around where I am typically don't get out of the driver seat, but it depends who you get).

@@hunterbriggs7624 As a contractor. when you have done it long enough. You can kinda get a feel for the people you are dealing with pretty quickly. What type of humor you can get away with. What you cant. In over 40 years I find most people just want to be talked to as just folk. People I find tend to respond better to a genuinely friendly person just being themselves than putting on some sort of fake front or a serious as death all business stuffed shirt. Likely the "Easy Money" there is something more to the story and part of a larger conversation prior. Nobody actually thinks its "easy money". I like this guy. Again having been in the trades for over 40 years and now watching the RU-vid vids from various trades You can tell the real deals from the made for RU-vid consumption snake oil salesmen who have more interest in looking clean and super pretty, and in the products they are endorsing (for profit) and selling than what the job entails and giving either poor advise or advise no non professional could ever hope to duplicate which seems to permeate RU-vid these days. Nothing worse for a driver than a truck without AC or heat. The floorboards can get so hot that they can actually burn your feet.Especially in the older Macks. I took temperature in a cab this summer when the truck had been parked on a 96 degree day. Even with open windows the temperature in the cab was 145 degrees. Our trucks are newer ones and do all have AC. Rear discharge mixers. Front discharge are not legal in this state, due to weight.

As a retired concrete mixer driver I started off really impressed with watching the preparations you and your team started the project off with. Sub straight down and tamped, The detail to depth and grade really had me impressed. And i told myself now that is the kind of work that deserves top wages. sending the truck back for wet load is almost unheard of cost contractors would rather pour soup and make the strength of concrete questionable. I appreciated the plywood to protect from ruts. The only thing i was not happy with is I did not see anyone hook the wire to pull it up into the concrete, making it useless. I hope it was an oversight on my part i will rewatch tomorrow to see if i missed it. i hope i did miss it as i was so impressed with everything else !! ~~~~ thanks for the outstanding video Keith

There will always be sections of mesh at the bottom even if they used dobe. The upgrade of course would be to just use rebar, that's what I would use on my driveway.

QC Manager for Redi Mix producer here. Your second load was absolutely too wet and you handled that perfectly and very politely. It may be useful to put yourself or one of your reliable crew members through the certification training process for slump and air testing. You may be able to protect yourself from issues like this if there is a dispute with the supplier by being able to perform these tests in the field. However, slump is a pretty obvious judgement call visually and you were able to make a good decision for your client. FYI a driver will base their estimation of slump on the resistance to the effort needed to mix/agitate in their drum. More force needed will equate to a stiffer mix. This driver likely mis-judged how much water she still had on from rinsing after the load before, and as a result, the batcher didn't withdraw enough water from the mix design to account. Sometimes they can identify this before it leaves the plant, and add extra material as a dry up.

Ryan is wicked calm. I've seen fist fights on jobsites over a lot less than a rejected load of concrete. In Construction, you got to have a super thick skin and be ready to dish it as well as take it. Great video. Cleanest concrete placement I've ever seen with no mess whatsoever on the property. Good call on the wet load sent back since wet concrete creates a huge weakness. Excellent flat work and control joints due to a great crew, however, I too am not a fan of the wire mesh sitting and rusting on the subgrade over time. In TX construction, we use 4" plastic chairs with #4 bar reinforcing steel, concrete rated for 3000 lbs. and steel cannot be allowed to sit on the ground, preferrably to be suspended within the top 2" of the slab. If I needed a slab placed, I'd hire you to do it and I'm proud of your work ethic. Great job !

When you mix concrete you don't accidentally make it that wet. It's done by the company's to try to be sneaky and save money. Concrete is measured by yards a yard weighs a certain amount Each truck carry so many yards. So a yard of concrete weighs just over 4,000 pounds. If they can make that 60% water in 40% concrete they're making a killing and not using as much concrete at the same time
@TIDEPROCESS18
@TIDEPROCESS18 3 года назад
@@textman09 you apparently have never worked at a ready mix plant . You try to sound like you have it all figured out but you don’t. State regulations call for scales to be checked monthly. 9/10 it’s the driver washing his truck down and adding water to get it to the right slump and that’s getting it too wet. Because every driver has a different opinion of what a slump is. I’m sure you’ve never even heard that word. If concrete is sent out wet it usually doesn’t cure right which causes the company To pay someone to remove it and/or repour the job. That all cost money not too mention paying the driver , the materials , the chemicals, the diesel fuel , insurance etc . You sound like a complete moron to put blame on a concrete plant trying to save money . Since you apparently use Google to get your info use Google again and see how much it really costs to make 1 hard of concrete and see how much profit you have. What’s really funny is you say it’s 60 percent water and 40 percent concrete. You do realize they make the concrete? It don’t come already made . 🤡 btw I’ve got 25 years combine experience as dispatcher, batchman, plant manager, operations manager and GM.

@@textman09 no man I’m trying to help you. Tell them you want it no wetter than a 4” slump. Let them know before it gets there if it’s wetter than that you will send it back…or even tell them you want the plant manager to make sure it’s on a 4 before it even leaves the plant. They have slump gauges but it’s according to how old it is it might not work. Even their fine print on the delivery ticket should say that can’t guarantee concrete if it’s over a 4 or even on the job longer than 30 mins. Anyway they don’t make money by sending out wet mud it will cost them a lot more in the long run if it cracks, spiderwebs, or even what they call honeycombs DUE to Wet concrete….most of the time when a driver adds water on the job they have to write how much and sign their name, we’ll cover your butt next time it’s wet and write on the ticket they crashing back you got it wet and sign ur name.

Love watching someone who knows and cares what he is doing. Couple years ago I watched a "contractor" on RU-vid passing on his amazing knowledge of concrete and advising viewers on all the things that are, "totally unnecessary, just a way to increase the charges", by not prepping the pad, not bracing his forms and, best of all, adding water to a load of ready-mixed concrete to make it easier to spread. I could almost see the professor in my concrete technology class (that's right; back when there was some respect for trades, colleges actually taught classes like construction practices and concrete technology) dropping his shoulders in shame. Totally enjoy watching these guys work.

It's funny cuz when I did concrete work we just eyeballed it, if it was too wet it would just take longer to dry, most the time we had go add water because it would be too dry by the time it got to the work site. Most the people doing this work in the states aren't professionally trained, unlike Europe and other countries who have training and certificates for these lines of work.
@gr6e
@gr6e 2 года назад
Colleges still teach these classes, people just can't pay tuition with a part time summer job like they could back then, so on-the-job training is the only option if their parents aren't millionaires, or if they don't take predatory loans that are mathematically impossible to pay back.. Quit complaining about things that you know nothing about. I wish we had it as easy as you did but your generation destroyed any chance of that with terrible policies. God it would be nice if the average annual salary today was enough to buy a house outright like you could back then.
