On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we prepare for our last winter in Seattle aboard our custom 435 catamaran SV basik. Condensation is a huge issue for anyone living on a boat in cooler climates so we do what we can to keep our boat dry and comfortable. Come back next week to see what other projects we take on...see you then!

Condensation under my queen bunks was a huge issue here in Portland Oregon on the Columbia. Way colder than Seattle. I used the Froli system. Solved the problem 100% and made the bed feel like a real mattress from home. It is the best solution I've found.

Hello Basik! I saw your episode about condensation and moisture in the beds. The problem is well known to anyone who sails on higher latitudes and should be solved from above. Do like this. On the mattress you put a table blanket (diffusion-proof and washable) and then a cotton blanket that is washable in at least 60 degrees. Then you make the bed as usual. The table blanket will prevent moisture from entering the mattress and the blanket will catch the moisture that is generated overnight and let it evaporate during the day. I use table blanket with rubber on the underside and terrycloth on the top. It is often sold on running meters. 1. Make sure that the mattresses are dry, let them dry for several days 2. Lay the tablecloth on the mattress 3. Put on the cotton blanket 4. do as usual. If you do like this, the problem with moisture in and under the mattresses is solved. If not You will have mold and damp in Your beds. Hope I explained in a understandable way. If not, please let me know. Lots of sailor greetings from Stockholm and thank You for great movies Peter

Suggestion....gets some mattress bed spacers often used in motor homes in Germany....called "Frolli"...you should be able to find something about this system if you Google it. Apparently they work well....and reduce damp on the underside of the mattress.

the wet spot under your mattress is from your trapped body heat. maybe ventilate under the mattress instead of sealing it off with the foam and the pad. then just install a small fan to circulate the air in that storage hold below the bed. just a thought from a home inspector/wannabe yacht owner :) love the great videos!!! - Kent

old school way of dealing with moisture under your mattress is two take a hole saw and drill numerous holes in the platform directly under the mattress itself. Helps keep the air circulating and the bottom of your mattress dry. Doubt the hole method would of helped in the scenario of condensation dripping down, but anyhow, looks good.
@OnboardLifestyle
@OnboardLifestyle 5 лет назад
If we drilled holes directly under our mattress waves would soak our bedding. Our mattress sits directly on the bridge deck.

Condensation is a problem that most people seem to brush under the carpet! Well done for tackling this. Many boats have foam/balsa cores to help with this - the way you were drilling the hull I presume your's is too! Have you ever seen an aluminium hull,, even on a warm summer's day, running in condensation - you wouldn't need a water maker! Hatch frames are another source unless thermally broken - most aren't. In building there are a few foam based wall liners which provide exceptional results, ventilation is also required as you are aware - small enclosed areas and warm most bodies are the perfect combination for condensation. An air change every 4 hours is difficult to achieve, so we are looking at a small dehumidifier to help combat the problem. Multi hulls have many advantages, but this is one of the few challenges... Beautifully presented and informative video, well done.

Cooking with gas generates water; which leaves you with two options: use induction cooking devices or get dehumidifiers, both will require a larger battery bank capacity. The dehumidifiers are useful when you have to stay away from the boat for an extended period of time and want to keep the boat from becoming a steam pressure cooker.

For the queen mattress, try putting the hyper ent between the mattress and the foam so there is air between the mattress and foam.

Have you considered insulating the entire crew area below the waterline? With a heating system trying to keep the hull warm while that hull is also being exposed to very cold water, your heating system is working much to hard heating the ocean when you only want to heat the inner air of the boat. The same works in reverse when you have air conditioning trying to cool the crew areas in the tropics.
@OnboardLifestyle
@OnboardLifestyle 5 лет назад
I think about it all the time but we are planning to head south next year. If we head to colder climates in the future or if excessive heat becomes an issue it will definitely happen.

I haven’t finish watching the video. But you need to put the foam on the bottom, then the ‘aermadress’ The moist from your body get trapped by the foam. If you use closed cell foam on your walls it keeps them dry. Cheers from Norway

I agree with Anders. In terms of physics you want to keep ambient air away from cold surfaces. So if you put the foam right on the haul surface you so create a first insulation barrier that slows down conduction from outside to inside. The surface temperature on your foam will be higher then it was initially on the haul, chances are you stay below the saturation treshhold and condensation stays away because the air can stil contain the vapor. Try putting one or two additional foam layers, this will increas the R value for blocking cold conduction. Then only provide the ventilation to disperse the poisture in a bigger volume.To be honest, it's a pitty you did not foresee a full insulation of the boat from scratch. I'm from central Europe, cold and rainy like Chicago State, The first thing I will do on my catamaran: insulate it and use low conduction materials for surface equipment.Love your channel by the way!

Pffft .. moist is suck indeed. On most boats I worked on they have some sort of springs under bed. It’s a simple healthy thing to dry the beds every day. There must be a bit of air passing under the bed. Even at a normal home. A body loses about a half to one litre of water on a good night sleep. So beds need to ventilate. I’m sure the liner fixes some what but when going to warm places a body is shedding more water. And that foam will be moist again. I’m sure you need more spacing between. But for sure it looks very nice .. my compliments on this job performed.
@cflowrider
@cflowrider 5 лет назад
I also agree with Anders. I would add a 2" raw wool mattress pad between you and the mattress helps massively with the moisture from your bodies. It also greatly ups the cozy comfy factor. Once I added that to the equation my mattress condensation problems stopped completely.
@see4182
@see4182 4 года назад
We pad our pricey foam mattress with two loosely woven acrylic blankets cut to size, then add a 600 count flat linen sheet over that, adding regular sheets as a barrier between the foam mattress and bodies. Works great in keeping us moisture free. The additional padding feels like sleeping on a cloud, too. In addition the layers keep the mattress cleaner. Trade off is more laundry (but acrylic and linen dry quickly). So worth it. HInt: NEVER use bamboo or microfiber sheets with foam unless you like waking up in a slimy pool.

Did you consider reducing lightly the inside volume of the cat by applying codeboard foam 1 inch or more all around to insulate it and the cover it with 1 or 2 layers of fibres? Doing it "sandwich" construction... it would add some cost, just a few hundred pounds, but lower much the trouble and cost with heating, cooling, dehumidifying and wiping every walls!

@@Thomas_Speck As for your original question, yes a foam cored, or even balsa cored hull is going to condensate less than a nidacore hull, this is because nidacore has air voids within the material. And obviously a solid hull is going to be very thermal conductive. Having the barrier of the foam or balsa will help greatly, although each material still does have its limitations based on it's thickness.

Great demonstration video, I'm just thinking too over kill and risky to make a line off holes for the trim under your water line... I'm wondering how much it weakens your structure. Hopefully not too much for compromise the integrity of the haul. But hey, looking pretty good

You should try using spray adhesive instead of 6700 turf adhesive . Easier and faster to apply and for cleaning when times come for replace.
@OnboardLifestyle
@OnboardLifestyle 5 лет назад
I would have prefered spray adhesive but the prep time superseded the application time of the 6700.

You need something like Spacerflex Teal if available again. than a sort of forced ventilation with external preheated flow everywhere more expel any stale air . Ies it s complicated condensation sucks!!!!
@OnboardLifestyle

I would definitely add forced air ventilation if we were not heading south before next winter.

I forgot how close we are to you guys. My wife and I have our boat's moored on Lake Washington. How did the moisture barrier work out? Did it stop the mattresses from getting wet?

I wonder if it would be more efficient to put the Hypervent layer adjacent to the mattress, foam insulation layer below the Hypervent. Also, I wonder if it would be worth using one of those Whisper aquarium air pumps with a long thin air diffusion cylinder to positively force air under the mattress continually to reduce stagnation. (I am guessing that it would help, but it's entirely possible it could make it worse.) Just thinking out loud here. Yeah, you have to put electrical energy into the system, but it might work. Be safe out there!

Hope your family had a Happy Thanksgiving. Teal, what was the material used under and along side Emma's mattress? Our V-berth mattress is always damp and I would sure like to solve that issue. Thank you for another great video.

We use DryMat and it has worked really well. Google "dry-mat mattress ventilation"
@johnturner2175
@johnturner2175 5 лет назад
I have a suggestion. Under the mattress you have this material that lets air move or flow. However the mattress is to large. The air under the mattress has no place to go. How do I know this. Well you prove it every time you lift the mattress and turn the fan on. It wouldn’t work if you didn’t lift the mattress and just turned on the fan. So what your doing is half right now you need to increase the circulation around the mattress that means a smaller mattress. Think about it.

Hey would you recommend sail boat living to someone with no prior boat experience but a lot of DIY skills and interest in boat living? Legitimately the only big concern I have about it is not knowing how to tie naval knots haha. Also what is the cost comparison approximately to that of an apartment in the Seattle area? I live in Seattle and housing costs here are an issue and I wonder if a boat would apart from being something fun and interesting while I don't have a family be also an affordable option. Also side note, your CAT is making me really like CATS where I didn't have too much interest before haha.
@OnboardLifestyle
@OnboardLifestyle 3 года назад
Linh was able to adapt and learn how to tie knots so you would be in good company. I can't tell you cost comparisons, but the boating community is very welcoming as well as helpful. You will not be disappointed with what you give up in space and some discomfort vs. the new friendships and family you gain. If you ever have an interest in learning more about living on the water in Seattle, look up Danny Varona. He's a great source to link up with for the Seattle cruising community. HTH!

Over 17,000 views.... My daughter pointed out if only 1000 of those that view became patron's and gave $1 or $2 dollars that would be $1000 or $2000 dollars for the people whose content we enjoy. I personally have to think about this and start campaigns on the sites I enjoy watching. For less than the cost of an espresso we can truly help folks out....

We have dehumidifiers onboard, but they don't work under the mattresses. This has worked so far and we have had below freezing temps this winter. We are very pleased and Emma is a happy sailor with a dry bunk. 😉

How thick is the hull and was you worried about drilling through it. I know you know your CAT in and out but I’m curious. The way you was drill it’s like it’s a two part hull or a bulkhead.

The hull is made of Nida-Core with a polypropylene honeycomb core. The hull is 1-1/4" thick and I was just drilling into the interior skin.
