Lawnmower blade converted to a knife? Has been done. Has the look anyway. Mower blades make excellent machetes. Once they are hardened.

We bought Condor Village Parang about three months ago. It's been used since then for Martial Art practice and for chopping. As a chopping weapon, it is outstanding. What we find is that it is very well balanced when moved through unusual angles in varying arcs either as an attack or follow through. The design of the handle is such that it behaves well in hand and always stays rooted. When chopping from varying angles... even a back hand swippe from low to high, the weapon remains steady.

I decided to buy one of these! Partially because it looks so great and because both John Lofty Wiseman and Ray Mears suggest this (type) machete!!

Thanks for the video. I might suggest strapping the sheath to your left hip, so as the tip of the blade is pointing toward the back and away from you. This way, you can draw the parang with your right (dominant) hand using the cross-the-body method. I also tend to rest my left hand on the spine of the blade as I draw, which helps keep a steady balance as the swivel-sheath tends to flex on the belt. You might find this drawing method more intuitive and safe. All the best!

I bet you can hack up a wild boar for the freezer in no time flat with one of those. I was lucky to catch mine on sale last year. You won't find a more rugged, well finished chopping blade for the price point Condor sells these things. I rub the blade down in a thin coat of used vegetable oil to keep it from rusting, if I'm not going to use it for a while.

You know, I really don't understand why these types of blades don't come in more standard leather - or even kydex - sheaths, where you can just pull them straight out. I understand the need for retention, but all you need to do is add a retention strap to the top of the sheath. These kinds of sheaths really just turn me off when looking at machetes.

The finish on the Condor's has a great contrast the high polish and the rough top of the blade. Well made, hardwood and brass just love it.

I have the Condor Bushlore I really like it for the price. I profiled it fixed the handle and sharpened it. I was looking to up grade to a more expensive knife. but, after doing all the work to mine and it not failing me. am thinking that I might just buy a parang or a sp8 by Ontario instead.

Not a bad representation of the knife, would have been nice for others to see some actual very fine detail work like feather sticks or tent pegs. Although I admire the parang style and know thier potential I'm an axe/hatchet/tomahawk/khukri guy but for someone just starting out or looking for something a bit different from thier nine inch bowie these are a good choice! Condor makes good gear!

after 3 condor products I am a believer. the quality is outstanding and nothing compares in its price range. I love their heavy duty kukri and while it's not on par with a HI or Tora,) it's a 3rd of the price and still very comparable. plus I don't feel as bad abusing the condor because it's not quite the work of art that the Nepalese ones are!

Hi Sootch, greetings from Malaysia. Nice to see something from my homeland being of utility to people around the world. The best duku chandong-style parangs here in West Malaysia are made in the small town of Bidor by a family-run smithy, and cost about USD12 to USD15. The standard handles are plastic crap (and can be replaced), but the blades are handforged from old landrover leafsprings. From the sounds of it, factoring in postage, quality and cost of a new handle, you got yourself a good deal with the Condor Village.
@sootch00

I'll check it out. I'd love to have an original Parang from Malaysia. Thank you my friend.
@belida88

+Vetinari67 I think the best duku chandung are made in East Malaysia (where it originated) by the dayaks. The Bidor parang seems to be a mass produced blade which is why its so rough and crude. I have a hand made duku chandung that was made by an Iban craftsman in Sarawak and its really good.

Hi +belida88 , I wholeheartedly agree - that's why I said the best duku chandong-style parangs in West Malaysia. I'm actually from Sarawak myself but live in Semenanjung now. I would definitely take an original Iban blade over everything else. BTW I visited the Bidor blacksmith earlier this year and found out that they haven't used old leaf springs in a long while -now they use proper steel billets.

I think this fella is gonna join the family soon^^ the only machete with that handle style is the golok, and I love it when chopping some really soft stuff I like to just grip it at the very end of the handle, it's really great if you need speed. talking about speed, I really love the sheath on the golok, you simply pull it out like a sword, removes one step in getting to work and while it might not be very sharp, it is extremely durable these and many other points make it my vavourite tool I used some gunblack to protect the blank steel, works great, have not sharpened it since I got it but used it quite a bit, still as "sharp" as when I got it

I have the BG Parang and I'm pretty surprised on the design and durability of that parang, works very well..better than my machetes and Gurka / kukri. For it's purpose or an outdoor blade it's really hard to beat.

After seeing your review I purchased one and I couldn't be more pleased. Yours is definitely shinier at the grind and yours looks more hammered than mine but that doesn't matter since it performs like it should. Thanks for steering me to a wonderful tool. I feel like I could field dress an animal and chop up some wood to cook it and make a rotisserie and then cut up the meat all with this same knife. A great tool for the value.

The condor village parang is a beast of a chopper and is excellent as a home base tool but at 2.2lb i found it to heavy to shelp about. So i went with it's baby brother the ECO parang at 1.3lb on my hiking pack and BOB.The eco can do 80% of the chopping and is much easier to use for processing and bushcraft tasks, if you get a chance give the ECO Parang a try i think you will like it. Take care and God bles you and your family.
