Hello Everyone,
This video explains, why aluminum is used as a conductor in transmission lines. It will also include different types of conductors like ACSR, AAC, AAAC, and new conductors like ACCR, ACCC, and ACSS.
#ACSR #ACCC #ACSS #AAC #ACCR #conductors #transmission #powersystem
It also explains the transmission system with the application of different conductors depending upon the kV and current rating.
1) Solid and hollow conductors are used in the substation to carry large current but for short lengths.
2) AAC is used in coastal applications. as it requires an anti-corrosive conductor. The aluminum conductor used in this conductor is pure, so it is resistant to corrosion and it does not have much mechanical strength so the span is short.
3) AAAC uses aluminum alloy instead of pure aluminum to increase its conductivity and mechanical strength. this is used for moderate spans. it is used for the river crossing, hilly area.
4) ACSR is the most common and widely used conductor in power transmission and distribution systems. It includes steel material used in the core area to provide mechanical strength and to prevent more sagging of the aluminum conductor. This ACSR conductor comes in various sizes and they are named according to the names of animals.
eg. rabbit, moose, dog, etc. refer the video for the table mentioned.
5) ACCR: instead of steel composite material is used in the core. and the aluminum used is alloy. it can carry double currently as compared to the ACSR conductor. it can work up to 200-degree celsius temperature. whereas ACSR can work up to 100 degrees.
6) ACSS: Annealed or zero tempered aluminum conductor is used. it carries more current than ACSR but less than ACCR. it can work up to 180-degree temp. it can handle mechanical vibrations.
7) ACCC: aluminum used is an alloy. for the core carbon composite or glass fiber material is used to provide good mechanical strength and avoid sagging. it can also carry double currently as compared to ACSR. it can work in temp up to 250 degrees.
In case of any doubt do let me know in comments.

Can you say, how we can choose a conductor for a particular transmission line? I mean, why should we go for DOG for 33kv and not rabbit or zebra..? And what will be calculations for this?
