Confessions of a D Girl: Colorism and Global Standards of Beauty | Chika Okoro | TEDxStanford

If you look like me, you’re used to colorism, says Stanford Graduate Business School student Chika Okoro. She calls the phenomenon known as colorism - discrimination against those with a darker skin tone -- “both as sinister and as subtle as racism.” In a world where light skin, light eyes and long “real” hair are sought after features, Okoro tells us how she copes, and what we can do to unlearn this deep rooted, destructive mindset.
Chika Okoro is a second year MBA student at Stanford. Passionate about race and gender equality, she is excited to raise awareness about the many issues that women of color face around the world. She hopes that her talk will start a conversation about important issues that people are less vocal about today. While at Stanford Chika is an Arbuckle Leadership Fellow providing leadership coaching and training to MBA 1st year students. Before coming to Stanford she worked at Procter & Gamble as an assistant brand manager and spent last summer at Google as a product-marketing manager. Chika holds a bachelor's degree from Harvard University where she wrote her honors thesis on race and identity in the black community.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

colorism exists in latin america, parts of south and east asia as well... its a long standing cultural belief that interrelates with other social caste systems. still projected today by mass media and now marketed by large beauty product companies to turn a profit based off of peoples insecurities about their own skin tone.

I'm a dark skinned woman too and I lived in a country where most people look more like me and I was still told I would be more beautiful if I was lighter skinned. Often by people no more lighter than I am. Anyway that was when I was younger. It all changed when I got to the University. That was when men told me I was beautiful because I was dark skinned. And these boys were the handsome popular ones too! To be honest what gave me skin pride was when my "lighter" skinned friends expressed their annoyance that the good looking guys gave me so much attention even though I was so dark. From that time to be honest I always want to be the darkest woman in the room! When I get lighter (somehow that happens) I use creams that have tan in them! I love my skin because it makes me exotic!

Then from the quality of your post, I can only assume you are albino. :) IQ tests are known to be culturally/racially biased, usually in favor of middle-to-upper-class white people, so I don't know why you'd care about those tests to begin with. IQ tests don't measure your intelligence, and they never have. They measure your test-taking ability and how similar your cultural background is to the person who wrote the test. Lack of melanin will usually help you on an IQ test, since most of them are written by white people, but that number won't tell you much. There's no standardized, sit-down test that can accurately measure intelligence, because there's no way to completely remove test-taking ability and cultural bias as confounding factors. Even once you think you've stripped out all the cultural bias in your test, you will be wrong. Given a list of items like "potato", "shovel", "hammer", "chestnut", and asked to divide them into 2 groups of 2, most western people would naturally divvy them up into "tools" and "food". In other cultures, like the Kpelle, it's more natural to divvy them up by task -- "potato" is planted with "shovel" and "chestnut" is opened with "hammer". If you have any questions that rely on categorization, this will completely screw up the results of your IQ test. You also need to worry about assumptions of "daily life", sports, pop culture, how family is categorized, general life values, etc. The arms of cultural bias are just too long and graspy to resolve within the scope of a single written test. Anyone who tries to sell you on the idea of "IQ" is a moron or a racist. (Also, white people aren't albinic. The genes controlling albinism are completely separate from the "racial" skin color genes, and there are black albino people who, though pale, are pretty clearly black... and probably wouldn't be too happy to see you talking about them like this. There's no reason whatsoever to believe albino people are less intelligent than the rest of us.)

Bravo! It took a great deal of courage to confront the Truth of Colorism. Excellent presentation. I ve talked to people in other cultures who are experiencing the same. The speaker is attractive. The hair extentions don't compliment her because they are not professionally installed. Nevertheless, it's concerning that she feels she needs to wear them to confirm to an unobtainable beauty standard rather than wearing the hair because of the diversity of styles extentions over. I think the issue is deeper than hair, skin color, or casting call lists. There are plenty brown and dark skin women who have been high profile, Tamara Dobson, Naomi Campbell, Tika Sumpter, Diana Ross, Kelly Rowland, Diane Carroll, and more. I acknowledge colorism does exist; however when you believe you're beautiful then you let nothing stop you from going for your dreams. Tika Sumpter is dark and lovely. In my family we have light and dark sybillings. All of my family is beautiful. I think colorism did not impact greatly because growing up my family taught me and told me I was pretty. Self-esteem starts at home. Not all light skin people are attractive. Growing up in New Orleans I saw colorism. However I knew I was going to great no matter my skin tone. You have to love the woman in the mirror. It all Starts with you. I was pretty before Exentions. Hair doesn't cover up who you really are. You have to love the you God made.

Toward the end, Chika makes a comment that beauty standards are learned and therefore can be changed. At the most basic level, I think not. But the good news for her is that she is absolutely an attractive young woman, who can undoubtedly get the attention of any number of others. If she wants to be an actress, well, go out there and show the world. Things don't happen without some work and society has certainly opened many doors where before they were closed. But complaining and sounding entitled is not going to bring you fans, and notice I didn't mention skin color was an issue.

I'm Asian - DARK FILIPINO to be precise and I am HANDSOME. I want to live in a tomorrow where you and I are not seeking permission or asking approval from the standard of beauty to actually love ourselves.

Part of the message I took from her presentation is the discrimination in not exclusively caucasian deficiency, but a human deficiency.

As a dark-skinned filipina, i've grown up to bullying because of my color. i hated myself because why couldn't i have been born with lighter skin? tv commercials always push us, convince us, that the lighter your skin is, the more beautiful you are. i'm 14 and i'm so insecure about myself and it's all because of these standards that i've iternalized. yes, it stays with me. and i really hope i'll be able to love myself more in the future, that my color is something to be proud of

ok, i am a 14 year old british girl and my parents are ethnically from sri lanka, i have had ppl tell me i am beautiful but not that "ur beautiful for a white girl" and I think that that is a MAJOR improvement, because ever since i was younger, i have always had a lot of insecurities revolving a round my figure and my facial features and ngl, all my friends are white, so even though they dont treat me differently and i dont treat them differently, i still have this voice at the back of my mind letting me know that more guys will be interested in them than me, they'll be more respected than me and that in the end no matter how hard i try, they will still reach my goals that i may never be able to reach simply because they are white, now i love my friends to bits but being a brown girl living in the uk, i used to sometimes wish i was white for these reasons which is why this NEEDS to change, Chika said it all, its very hard to embrace yourself and who you are when ur a person of colour, and it probably be a very long time until every women of colour will truly believe that she really is beautiful regardless of what society embeds in our brains. so i would like to say to whoever reads this that u r so beautiful and u keeping slaying cuz u really r a queen, i do NOT care what skin colour you are, what kind of hair you have, what size u r or whether u have pimples or not because in my eyes you are all BLINDINGLY beautiful and its about time we give society a big middle finger.

She is speaking of a valid serious issue but for me her delivery was affected by what she is wearing. In my opnion it is not compatible with the talk, If she would have wore something less revealing and more favorable for her body shape, it would have been less distracting and the talk be more accepted. It is way distracting and it is unfortunate because she is very intelligent and speaks of a very important issue.

In Africa, where blacks have, always, enslaved blacks - and do still -, there is a preference for lighter skin too, something she reinforces by wearing hair that is way more common in lighter people. Contradiction is this lady's name.

Except almost every country in Africa was colonized by Europeans which may be why there are issues there today.
@michaels4255

If this were primarily due to America's racial history or European colonialism, one would expect to see an equal preference for light skinned over dark skinned men. While there may be a little of that, it is primarily a preference that applies to women. That tells me there is something going on here that is much deeper than the legacy of racial hierarchy.
