Dear Rinpoche welcome to the club of suffering and abuse. The fact that you survived and still maintain compassion and loving kindness in your mind makes you a hero. You can be a role model to so many of us. Thank you for being strong and honest.
@B W If his love and compassion were superficial as you said, then you have no love or compassion at all. By the way, what have you done so far to make the world a better place?
Thank you Kalu Rinpoche for speaking your truth and being you.. I have so much respect for you after seeing this video. You are brave. Enlightenment and truth have nothing to do with traditions or religion.. You are a shining jewel and the universe is giving you these experiences that you are living through so you can discover a higher dharma beyond tradition and religion..
After everything that happened in your life, your attitude shows that the essence of Buddhism exists and that compassion and love above anything else are always the main goal to achieve. Your story and strength helped me to improve my own mind. Thank you very much, Rinpoche.
As a Tibetan, I just want to let you know that I support and respect your decisions to come forward and speak up. You are more trustworthy to me than many of the other rinpochens.
11 years later, I have met you as you are today. Thank you for your commitment to the essence of the Dharma. You have blessed my life by what you have shared with me.
You are a very brave man for coming forward and openly talking about what happened to you. I hope you get some good counseling to help you deal with the trauma you endured. Bless you my friend.
Dear Rinpoche, I am so sorry that this you have had to go through this. I had heard that abuse had happened to young Western tulkus who'd been shipped off to the Tibetan monastic system, but I had no idea it could also be occurring within the highest incarnate lineages such as your own. Thank you for bringing the brokenness of the system to light, and while I understand that you have your own projects and concerns and a desire to move forward, I sincerely hope that you will continue to work to modify the monastic system, lobby for oversight and accountability, and help bring about a reformation of the tulku system, which is obviously sorely needed. Thank you for your dedication to sentient beings.
-I always tended to have a very rosy view of Tibetan monasteries - sort of a romantic fantasy. Your words have opened my eyes and it's massively important you've spoken out on this issue. I really hope and pray your issues are being seriously addressed...... obviously, the Catholics aren't the only ones - it's a universal problem that runs through all religious institutions - all belief systems. It's clear too that until victims speak out, nothing will be done to root out the corruption and hypocrisy behind the rituals and teachings.. I wish you a blessed life, young Sir and I hope by shining a light in the darkness - those who commit these evils on kids will be brought to justice - in this life. And if not, why not ?
I thought too there were no sexual abuse in the Tibetan Monasteries. Oh My God! I start to think of the monks I know and those I sponsor... And as far as Rinpoche is concerned, I have only the strong wish to give you a long curing hug. I hope by now you have overcame the hardest part, but I know it's not be like it never happened. It's heartbreaking for me and shocking in the same time.😱
I grew up in Chicago, and was always reminded that "the blues ain't nothin' but a good man feelin' bad". You're a good man, and I would like to support your school.
Thank you for sharing this!! Thank you! Thank you! Time for all things to come to light!! only in this honesty can we transform this world.. You have no idea the gift of this for those of us who grew up in abuse and what it has taken us to rebuild our lives and come to the TRUE dharma of our Hearts!!!!
Or they come out so damaged that they hardly function, plagued by a lifetime of depression and mental/emotional incapacity. Don't be naïve or preach naïveté. It doesn't help.
From own flesh and mind (similar things happened to me 15 years ago) I know that what has been done to you leaves terrible shadows and marks on one's soul and life. I wish you from the bottom of my heart that your wounds may heal one day. First step is forgiveness, next step is being good to yourself. And still see light where shadows fall, still see love where violence and harm ruled. I am at that point now, love and light rule again in my soul and heart and life. I wish you the same, dear Kalu Rinpoche. My deepest respect for your courage, my deepest compassion for you, your soul, and my profoundly felt healing wishes .
Kalu Rinpoche, I am following you from now on. I always hated the fact that people following Rinpoche without any reasons behind it. Even in Bhutan we have lots of Rinpoche who just drives a Big SUVs and hook girls around and go outside for a donation in the name of Buddhism. I have lost respect in them, long long ago. In fact they annoys me more than the thugs in the streets. Rinpoche, have a good life ahead and today you honestly opened my eye. Dam this fucking too many tilkus(reincarnations) and Rinpoche's are annoying me so fucking bad. Just stay home, buy a Buddha's statue and a prayer book. That's more then enough, you don't need a fake teacher who wants to blackmail you in the name of religion. You are your own master. These gurus are Devil in the name of Buddhist monk.
Thank you Kalu Rimpoche for this honesty, I have so much Respekt for you and you are for me the best thing in this world i think who can change all this destruction. You give us hope and help us to trust in life. You give me my refuge when I was 18 in Montpellier and I know that this help me every day to get throught this life, thank you really . Géraldine Tamm
I agree so much, and i had to stop being a monk after 14 years because of neglect and the way people don't care about Society or the environment or any wisdom, just money power sex as you say. I saw it, i was losing my mind and so i just left on my own to work with the teachings. I agree about finding people, caring for your family
Thank you Very Verable and Dear Kalu Rinpoche, Through your difficulties and hardships you are made strong.Your recent weekend with teachings in Gothenberg,Sweden were wonderful and we all have benefitted greatly through your kindness and straight from the heart openness.
So powerful, so honest. Peace my friend! There are many like you, although in different circumstances... We understand what you've been through and we all heal together.
I've heard some disturbing rumors about the previous Kalu Rinpoche - that he had an abusive relationship with a Western consort, and much worse, had a teenage Tibetan consort who was ritually murdered. Then there are the many stories about Trungpa that some have justfied as 'crazy wisdom' but I can't. This courageous public airing out of issues will ultimately result in the betterment of Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhism in general.
You are honest, courageous, and your intentions honourable. May you find the kindness and support you need. Humanity's fight against evil must focus on religious institutions. Because the outward goodness of religious institutions provide best cloak behind which all kinds of evil lurks - sexual abuse, money laundering, political power-mongering etc. Many people know this, but it takes brave pure souls to speak up. May divine forces care and protect you always.
Hello Kalou! i met the former Kalou in Kaguy Ling temple in France , and i met you , as you were a child , at the same temple, in toulon sur aroux. I already knew the problems in this area and i could notv say anything because of the Omerta Rule. But what you say now is absolutely true, and by this confessions, you released the new purified way to practise the budism . that's great and i would like to follow your work, and follow you teaching
+tchen1706 If there is a serious transgression by a Buddhist teacher it is to be reported to their teacher or fellow teachers, and maybe others. Nobody is above the law, and no one is below it. See the book "Dakini Teachings". I also am a student of the previous and current Kalu Rinpoches.
wcangel who is the corrupt teacher will you please tell me? i have deep respect for the tibitian people and it Buddhism if any body who kept alive true buddhism that is tibitian people ,but like other religion corruption also enters in Buddhism also . as long as i knew in india there is not any corruption revealed in tibitian buddhism the kagyue temple in sikkim state rumtek monestry is the best .
@@sumandas9487They’re not exposed YET & it’s a well orchestrated institution to keep their dirty laundry under the Rug & nobody suspects anything. It’s a twilight Zone where people are worshipped & idolized, and nobody has any interest in the True Creator God. Do your research before fully believing anyone…
Dear Rinpoche, as you know the human mind has the potential to change suffering into good works. May your vision of creating a better system come true. Your suffering and your ability to come into a better understanding of the human contition can help many others. The system you describe is a reflection of how the world is in general. There is much abuse in the world, yet it can be changed the answer is within you. Bless you.
Rinpoche, I just want you to know how BRAVE you are in doing this. I honour you for that. Thank you for letting us know about the Real Truth inside of Tibetan Buddhism.
Thank you rinpochela for being honestly, and don't think you are nothing think that you are something who can achieve anything.stay safe rinpochela always.
You take care too, dear Kalu. I met you when you were 6 years old and you visited Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. One afternoon you visited our community in Alto Paraiso called Cupulas de Saint Germain, 250 km north of Brasilia. You came with 6 adult lamas and your mother. You played in the garden with Narada Muni, who was also 6 and lived with us at the time. The lamas sang sutras in the big purple dome and the accoustic was wondderful. All my love for you. Have a good life.
Very shocking news that tibetant Buddhist monks can be so evil and shameful to commit sexual abuse. Monks to me are only humans. There are true monks, there are also fake monks. I am Buddhist, but I don't believe in monks or religious teachers. I pray straight to Buddhas, especially to Kwan Yin, also known as Goddess of Mercy, also known as Buddha Averlokitesvara I have been blessed by Buddhas. I had ever been literally saved from a deadly fall by Buddha Kwan Yin, when I was 5 yrs old. I remember the incident so vividly. My colleague's mother was saved from drowning in a lotus pond, when she was kid in China. She saw Buddha Kwan Yin with bright rays of light emitting. Kalu Rinpoche, you are a good man, im sure you will achieve Buddhahood one day. May Buddhas bless you always.
All I can say is "thank you, thank you, thank you!" I am grateful to you for letting down your guard and allowing us to witness your humanity. May you be happy,.peaceful, and loved beyond your wildest dreams. Nate Kelley
Just getting around to this now however your integrity is stellar. You have been through a lot on your path in life and it means a lot to me that you have gone through similar struggles. Thank you for being so honest about the Dark Side of monastic life and your personal challenges. You are definitely one of my favorite rinpoches to listen to and it is a great accomplishment to approach innovation with courage.
I started off Buddhist then I went through some failings in my life. Discovered a translation of the story of Milarepa. It inspired me to re-approach Buddhism. I've been sober 14 years now and try to remember my sitting practice every day, but do not always succeed.
Thank you Kalu Rinpoche ! I too was abused by my father! I too was an alcoholic and drug addict. I will be in SF at KDK for Four Dieties and Niguma Yoga. Till then peace and safe travels. BTW I came to see you in San Jose in 2000 at the Red Lion Inn on N. 1st St in San Jose. I have a photo of you at age 9 or 10. Peace and love. ❤
I bow to your honesty and difficult life circumstances that you have experienced. It's not uncommon that for beings breaking new ground or with tradition to be met with hostility, from those who identify strongly with their tradition. My view is that tradition only becomes confusing when a person takes it as their actual identity. Any one of us could have been born wearing the shoes of another culture - some would say that the work of their previous incarnation would dictate birth circumstances but other people disagree. It's a long drop from any, very structured society, but most people, who are bringing some degree of reformation have to face up to loosing what people think constitutes their identity. Sometimes, people appear to forget that 'Buddism' is bascially 'the way of being aware', so of course, anybody can embody that and it is worth remembering that Buddha is a title, not a name. Thich Nat Hanh also took Buddhism out of the monastary and into the world in Vietnam, by coming up with something he explains was totally new for Buddhism at that time by doing the same kind of thing. Thank you for your courage. Keep going :-)
Dear young Master of Buddhism! Thank you for your courage and for speaking the truth. These times require renewal and adaptation. The essence never changes, but is updated and adapted. Buddha bless your steps. Take the Dharma everywhere you go! I'm gay and a follower of Buddhism ... And now ... His fan too! Thanks!
Tashi delek sweet kalu rinpoche, I've seen your video and your commentary returned me very sad, I also had in my childhood and lardo of my life I have been abused by my father and my ex-husband and his family, but thanks to dharma am happy now and I feel much compassion for all those who dedicate their intelligence to do harm to others. We must be happy and know that all the difficulties that arise in our lives are purifications and also a great learning experience for giving us the opportunity to earn achievements as compassion, patience, love, etc We must always be happy and if our body is an instrument for others to download your anger, let us pray that hopefully these people do not fall into the mental state of hell scorching great suffering, Dear Kalu Rinpoche, I have always you admired and I feel a deep respect for you. you are an example to all. dharma brother and friend, be happy despite the difficulties and obstacles, we will immerse ourselves in the samsara to obtain maximum happiness and help those who need your help. The paradise is nirvana is happiness, emptiness of fenomens and wisdom and peace in our mind. The Samsara and suffering is not in the world, is in our minds with negative emotions. you have a long life please with my all respect for you i love you so much sweet brother Lobsang dekyi
I just missed Kalu Rinpoche in his last life(by 1 month) - Kalu Rinpoche seems to have great potential this life - he is understanding dharma - not misapprehending appearances. Promising teacher in the making? Lets hope so.
It's your blessing of good karma, and your choices of purity in liberation which have opened another parallel reality to humanity's awakening. Thank you for Self-awareness insights.
Life is sometimes tough, but I think you're on the right track in going back to basics like compassion and love and it heals the heart and hope. All the best :-)
I am so sorry that Kalu Rimpoche experienced such aweful neglect and abuse. He is right, people see the image of a dalai lama in him but he is very human and he has been hurt. Good for him for speaking the truth. He was the victim of attempted murder. I hope he can find someone who really listens to him. This may be his gift to humanity. That he knows what pain is. So much bravery to get through his childhood. His vision of where Buddhism as a structure needs to go is honest and true. The structure does need to change. Blessings to you
this is quite sad that there is sexual and physical abuse in monasteries of all sorts(Buddhist, Catholic Christian, etc.), as well as egocentric spiritual materialism where some Rinpoches create crowds of admirers but are really empty of true realisation and full of conceptual thoughts and ideas, which they learnt from others but never truly realised for themselves.
If you are really seeking true God or real Truth, just try to know Jesus, who said ” I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.“ (John 14:6) If you are really honest to yourself or to your heart, you will find Jesus is the only true God in the world. I had ever been a Budda worshipper 20 years ago and got many disasters until I began to know and believe Jesus later. Now I am a Christian with numerous thanks to Jesus for His salvation and guidance. All above is my real experience!
Bravo, Kalu - I remember when you were having difficulties some years back, as you posted photos of your life (in US?) - so easy to get lost and lose touch with our loved ones - as you were only a teenager. You must've seen others struggle at that time. You seem so much healthier now - you are a wonderful human - and so much more. Good luck to you, dear Rimpoche - you can make the changes - and good luck with your school. Tuchi che, dear Kalu - and 'May the road rise to greet you' - from a Celtic prayer in Ireland - and means 'The best of luck to you' XXX
Hello Kalu! Very cool video. I was almost disgusted by what Sogyal Rinpoche has done since he is clearly not a reincarnation of Terton Sogyal and I just had a long post on how I am one of the beings who has received the presence of Terton Sogyal so I am sure Sogyal Rinpoche is a fake. I am somewhat inclined to find some treasures but I also know that this life is no more for me and is just an ego game. Let's get together and meet up as I am sure we can help each other. I did meet Kalu Rinpoche when I was a child in San Francisco so whether you were him or not does not matter to me. You are a beautiful human and the sign that I should meet you will be a dream of a lion that you shall have in the coming days.
So, you are saying that Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, the 16th Karmapa, and many other Masters got it wrong about Sogyal Rinpoche being Terton Sogyal? And are you saying you find treasures? If so, that says a lot!
@1fromtibet your threatening gesture and tone might be one of the reason rinpoche chose not to divulge the name assailants. First fully understand the context of the speech. he is not saying monks are bad but instead he is saying being a monk doesn't necessarily make good. Yes monks are dying in Tibet and it is very sad and frustrating for me as a Tibetan too. but what has that to do with what Rinpoche is saying. he is asking people to follow buddha's true principle of compassion.
Hi man, sad to hear your story. Well I thought Rinpoches or Karampas are very wise souls because of their past lives and spiritual practice. So I think logically there are 2 options, first one is: There is no such a thing as reincarnation, second : some of great names "masters" are fake ones ( Trinley Thaye Dorje or Sogya Rinpoche etc - my opinion). I just hope second version is right :). Anyway all good for you my friend and keep close to patch of light.
@atomxgirl this is a completely insensitive and inappropriate comment. why are you angry and judgmental toward a young man who is very vulnerably and frankly sharing his trauma. i can't even believe you would minimize it and compare him to others in the way you are - as if it is a sign of his lack of spiritual development that he is not maintaining silence, repressing his emotions and keeping it "all in the family" of a corrupt institution.
I think it's great that you are so frank and honest on YT. I think it's great that young people have a young Rinpoche that has gone through many of the things they go through, things that they have seen. It gives me great hope to see the next generation, like yourself. Wise words, brave steps, you're doing 'fine and dandy' as we say. I shall keep in touch. Lots more uploads I hope.
my heart feels for you , thank you for this confession, despite your tragic past you have held your dignity. I do wish you the best for your project for the school. It is refreshing to see that buddhism has a very real human face so stay strong knowing that you do have support and respect and are held in high regard in the world. Many Blessings.
Hello Mr. Kalu Rinpoche. It's an honour for me to write this message hoping that you may read it. The age we are living in makes life very tough if people wish to remain honest and upright. It sounds like you are doing some very necessary spiritual spring cleaning. This will help you to advance spiritually whilst dropping unwanted baggage , in simple terms, like the way a crab casts off it's old shell so that it can expand and grow. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
also i remember that the Dali Lama in an interview DID state that there are not practitioners he knows of who are able to practice "Tantric Sex" without attachment. So, that is the answer to whether the gurus are actually all that clear when it comes to the crazy wisdom or temptations of sex. These charged areas Money Sex & Power -- sometimes it just seems so RIDICULOUS that so-called dedicated people can be SO thick in their confusion.
Great stuff. Thank you for speaking the truth. You are a better Buddhist than those who hurt you or tried to. After so much false dharma, it is not surprising that you had to experience what the world has to offer before coming back to the true Dharma and establishing a school where, I am fairly sure, the teachings will be done in the correct way. Other monks (including one very well known one) are alcoholics just like you, but they are content to keep drinking and using their rinpoche status to sexually exploit others until they die. Not you. You are passing the true Dharma on to future generations.
Thank you very much for your honesty Rinpoche. Many practitioners in my part of the world (Europe), often make the mistake of viewing a person who is ordained or wearing red robes, as someone who has reached a high level of compassion / wisdom, or someone they should look up to as higher beings. Unfortunately this isn´t always the case - and many practitioners are still dealing with ignorance, attatchment and these things (some worse than others) that appear in all aspects of the human realm.
Thank you for your honesty ! May this help to accelerate better development for any generation and undestanding. A study on Ken Wilbers books you might find very helpful to study about this topics, specially INTEGRAL SPIRITUALITY. We are sorry to hear about this or any sangha, we are sorry for the horrible experiences you experienced. Humans are complicated and we develop in many levels, in many ways, and new aproaches for spirituality, teachings, structures of any organization need probable a re-vision, this is for us the way to the future. We do wish you the best for your proyect and your school.
Your story had bought tears to my eyes & aches to my heart! Because I feel the same way that Buddhism temple seem to become more business & politics instead of practicing the truth of Buddhas teaching!!! I stopped going to a temple that I had gone there on a weekly bases for three years. Because I had seem issue with monk just care for practitioner who will bring in the money. But for practioner like me & you that got sexual harassing & abuse. No one want to listen to us because we're the trouble maker not the money maker. I'm a big believer of cause & karma! And will accept my pass karma this life only if I chose a continuing path to harm others in this life time. Instead I chose to following Buddhas teaching, be loving & compassion to all being & no even to harm an ants while I'm walking. I become a vegetarian because I see that all living things deserving to live & to not suffering just like me. So does karma served me & Kalu Rinpoche right this life to all of my dearest brother & sister? You don't have to answer to me but answer it to yourself. As for me I found all of my answer & my teacher within me & that's the truth of Buddhas teaching as always! May the Buddhas teaching awakening in all of us to be loving & compassionate always to all being by practing it through our mindful speech, thought & action always!
Like making it fit ones life. Find the truth in what they say but don't take everything 100%. . I give my total love to you. I keep you in my heart. You are my partners teacher. You confirmed her whole life. It is not the illusionary idea that most people create and want to believe. Keep It Real. Always .
It is horrible to think that you were a innocent young kid, helpless and alone with predators. I'm so sorry. You are very brave and strong for speaking publicly about this. These things need to be brought out in this way, not hidden. Thank you for sharing, and all of my prayers and wishes are with you.
@Emi Tsukawaki I can totally relate to you, because I have cried I have yelled I have felt like going crazy while watching all this sorrow happen it feels like an eternity. Only thing I know is not to give up and live up to the best you can Thanks kalu for making this video it makes me have more hope in humanity!
My God .. at such young age You defintely have a thoughts of a noble and wise soul . I just ended up here after watching you visiting Old Age and giving blessings in ropes fast forward in the year 2022 ....my god this clip has been over 1 decades 😳 .. Namo Buddha 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for this and for reaching out to people the way you do! I and my son took refuge in the 70s with the previous Kalu Rinpoche and then met YOU in Sherabling and in Bofhgaya when you were around 12-14, haven't followed your whereabouts since then. Surprised and pleased to find you here : ) Wish you all precious things and happiness on your path - always connected
