My dad brought a new, blue '59 Kingswood home one day, and my brothers and I squabbled heatedly over who got the wayback. We boys could hear the gas sloshing around, and Dad claimed it was special, "station wagon" gas. We were awestruck. The whole family loved that car, and I cherish the memories attached to it. Thanks for posting these wonderful old films!

In Canada, The Pontiac was a rebadged Chevy and the Dodge, was a rebadged Plymouth, Meteor, was a rebadged Ford.

notice how chevy didnt even touch the fact that ford had 2 different convertibles ...no mention of the skyliner at all

Yeah, these were "tailored" for sure... but generally honest. Chrysler had "oriflow" shocks which ford claimed were just like their shocks... Chrysler "tuned" the orifices though for the vehicles... Ford didn't really do that. I might do a comparison video

The Chevy wagons, only had a Powerglide, Plymouth, had a three speed avalable with 8 cyl.

Interesting that the narrative doesn’t call out the completely new style if the Chevy or point out that Plymouth and Ford use facelifts of two year old bodies.

another thing..chevy brags of more glass area..this is true,,but its like they imply ford cheated you out of more glass...its just a case of the chevy is a bit bigger then the ford ,,so of coarse the glass will be larger....and hence little more leg and hip room ...ford cant be all bad seeing they were known as the wagon master ...and owned almost 1/2 wagon sales just to ford ...it was in a sense...the f150 of the day
@autochronicles8667
@autochronicles8667 Год назад
yeah "glass" area was a serious point of the sales war... everyone wanted "more" glass... Chevy and Ford went with the knee knockers in order to expand the windshields. Tall people hated them :) finally in early 60s GM and Ford capitulated to Chryslers pillars.

Ford was boss on convertibles, as well...today the 1957 Chevy Bel Air convertible is considered the iconic car of the era. In 1957 the Fairlane 500 ragtop outsold it by 30,000 units. And there were bow tie rag tops still on the dealer floor or regional distribution lot at the end of the model year.

on the ford wagon you can load something long and let it hang out the tailgate with the gate up and close the window on top of what ever you are hauling and keep most of the weather out ,,not on chevy ,,,,,and what chevy wont tell you is you can fold part of the rear seat down on either side on the ford and still carry more ppl ,,,not on the chevy ...and in a ford you are safer on a side impact seeing the ford has an outside frame...not on chevy

Yeah, Ford wagons I think had the edge... still can't believe 2 door wagons existed...

I have never been a fan of the '59 thruogh '61 Chevy's.... Frankly they were grotesque. When the '62 Chevy's came out... Love was in the air! Sorry I thought most FoMoCo products and Gm products were fugly on the late Fifties.... but that is just me...

I am kind of fond of fins :)

My strongest objection to the 1959 Chevy is those horrific fins. I was so glad when 1961 Chevy came out and did away with the fins.

the guys making the stampings where not so happy about it either... it was a PITA to stamp and assemble i heard.
@Greatdome99

I also heard that due to the extreme metal forming, the lower surfaces of the fins were very thin and prone to rust.

As I have mentioned, Ford was stronger in the convertible and station wagon market than Chevrolet...

.....if you look closely at the entire line of '59 GM cars, it had to be GM's most ill-conceived styling exercise that unfortunately hit every division in the same year....but with 50% of the market and a mega advertising budget, people convinced themselves they were beautiful....the '59 GM cars made Edsels look beautiful.
@autochronicles8667
@autochronicles8667 Год назад
the 59 was the weirdest GM put out for quite some time... the double eyebrows... but remember GM was in shock from the 57 mopars.. They scrapped everything in 57(the 58 they did slap TONS of shiny bits to "out shine" mopars).. then they went wtf in 59... they quickly fixed the front end for 60 and fins were already aging..

Hey there…Edsels are beautiful. My dream car is a loaded 1958 Edsel Citation 2-door hardtop or convertible…in some gorgeous three tone paint scheme. 👍👍

Mostly agree, but when they came out, I thought the '59 Buick was very nice--cleaner lines than the other GMs. You have to admit it was a VAST improvement from the 1958 chrome-laden model.
