I custom configured a glider there once with Gerhard and he was amazing! Really allowed me to do some special things with my ASW24e. The biggest one in some ways was letting me delete the standard sliding window for a simple 100mm diameter hole. I was able to fabricate a backing plate of thinner Lexan to be the seal and used the supplied 100mm curved discs to make my own clear plugs, with two thin stainless steel springs putting the back pressure on my little pop out window. The ventilation “loss” from the loud tip out scoop was more than compensated by greater simplicity and better optics. No rails or big rectangular window made for much better view.

It would have been helpful to explain that this is not the usual situation for purchasing a new glider. For most people they do not simply walk into a manufacturer in January and have a completed glider for the World Championships in August of the same year, no less AERO in April. Most popular sailplane manufacturers measure the waiting list in years, not months. Perhaps you ordered it a year or two ago and now it's time to finalize the configuration? If Schleicher is sponsoring and/or giving preferential treatment by expediting your delivery in order to make the worlds that should be disclosed so everyone knows this is not the normal course of business.
@SteFly
@SteFly 3 месяца назад
Yes, that´s true. The waiting time for an AS33 Me is several years. Production capacity is limited and every glider needs 2000 - 2500 working hours. This video shows the configurator and options you have when it´s time to finalize the order.

Hi Stefan, wieso hast du dich für eine AS 33 ME entschieden? Wo siehst du die Vorteile gegenüber einer JS3 RES und einem Ventus 3e? Danke im Voraus!
@SteFly
@SteFly 3 месяца назад

@@SteFly as I understand, it's done on purpose so that the gliders are more matched / more competitive gliders are available. V3 and JS1 would suffer when AS33 and JS3 can get to 60kg/m2 while they can't. On the other hand, at the moment the newer gliders with smaller wings get a little disadvantage since they are lighter in absolute numbers. Looking at the races and results so far, it seems pretty fair in the sense that glider choice seems to not matter much for the results.

I have used a compass on the top of my glare shield for over 20 years, and, of course, never looked at the compass course. I put white marks at 45° on its face. They’re great for judging your bank angle. Unfortunately, I have a blue tint canopy in my used Shark MS, and recognize your issue with filming from the inside. I have tried to compensate using the white balance adjustment. Do you know what adjustments can be made to the camera to resolve the issue? The blue tint is nice for one reason, I don’t have to wear a hat and can put my camera on a head strap that holds it just above my eyebrows. I use a DJI action 2, which is small enough to fit there quite nicely. Unfortunately, it heats up rather quickly and I can’t get more in about 15 minutes of film without having it rest.
@SteFly
@SteFly 3 месяца назад
Nice idea with the compass. I have currently the option to add one additional Air Control Display and then put the compass on top of the instrument panel cover. Not decided by now. The white balance is very difficult with tinted canopies. On the inside you also have distorted colors and on the outside it depends on the angle you are filming through the canopy. If it´s a flat angle you will have more blue plexiglas than on a 90 degree angle. I think it's impossible to get a perfect result but at the end it doesn´t matter too much. The experience is more important ;)
@SteFly

And I also use the DJI Action 2 from time to time on my head. For shorter videos it´s fine and I love the perspective.

Other than a vertical card compass, which I did use to tell me which way the runways were, I have only used a compass twice. Both times on extremely hazy days. However, the LX has a compass so I have no idea why a compass is required equipment. I can't find a whiskey compass in a F-22.

Hey Steve, at most competitions we don’t dump the complete water ballast even in weaker conditions. But of course there might be one competition day at some point where a pure glider would be better. For me it’s a great compromise between a competition glider that allows me to make expeditions and gliding safaris. For all normal XC flights it’s absolutely no handicap and at some days I don’t need to ballast the glider with water. Must feel like Club class in the morning 😅

Why is selflaunch at 600 kg important for comps? They generally have towplanes. and the JS3RES can fly ay 600kg as a 'turbo' - plus has the greater flexibility of easily removing the batteries for the really weak days....... but lets see what the 'vintage' V3 and new D4 bring to the table.............. p.s. can the AS33ME fly with 15m tips like the JS3RES can?
