Walking pipelines, if safe to do so, can tell you a great deal of information about the integrity of the pipe surface. Because this pipe is a combined sewer (sewer and storm water combined), there was great ventilation due to the storm drain inlets, and very low flow, making it safe to enter. Even so, we carried a oxygen/gas detector, had our own rescue crew at the ready, and carried escape air canisters.
