Unfortunately it seems the best course of action in these situations is to minimize the death count, make sure rescue is possible or wait for someone properly equipped to make the rescue.

Ben Whiteside I can see 2 people dying, say 1 guy goes in and goes down, if you were in that area yesterday and it was safe and today the guy goes in and goes down, you might go in to get him thinking he had a heart attack or something, but as soon as you see the second guy go in and go down as well, time to either get the proper equipment or wait for the people who have the proper equipment and skills to make the rescue.

TheMattc999 in this case, the second guy went in to save the first guy. The third and fourth victims were paramedics that were summoned to rescue the first two guys. They were not aware of the atmospheric hazards as this space had not been labeled a confined space under the regulations of the time. They were just performing their jobs as usual. This was a rare case, but they didn’t all go rushing in one-by-one like dominoes.

(Industrial Safety Course TTC: Chris Nelson) I guess something to keep in mind is how the confined work space may change, and how those changes may result in new dangers. Being mindful of the state of the confined space will allow you to be aware and start preparing before you put yourself in a poor situation

If you go down use a safery harnes and rope so if something goes rong they can pull you out instead of they go down to perform rescue let us all learn from accidents and plan for the worst that could happen

In the absence of additional context, that story sounded really dumb

#1 rule of any rescue: DO NOT RISK BECOMING THE NEXT VICTIM

That is correct and yes it is important for any rescue but especially for confined space rescues due to most of the people who die in confined spaces at about 60% of them being would be rescuers.
