Ever wondered about Confirmation in the Bible? Is Confirmation even in the Bible? And is it distinct from Baptism?
Dr. Brant Pitre looks at two passages in the New Testament that show that the early Church celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation.

@markpeter1968
@markpeter1968 5 лет назад
the body decays or “break down into its component parts.” As Scripture says, “The dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it” (Eccl. 12:7). Because the soul is spiritual in nature, there are no “parts” to break down. Hence, the soul continues to live as a substantial, though incomplete, entity. It is in this sense that we say the soul of man does not die, while the body and the person do. www.catholic.com/magazine/print-edition/ellen-gould-whites-original-lie

@@nirmalcleetus8296 Spirit is the Spirit of God (God breathed life into Adam). Our souls are what animates our bodies. CCC# 362: A human being is both corporal and spiritual. Man first received his soul when God breathed life into Adam. Man as both body and spirit is willed by God. CCC# 363: In Sacred Scripture "soul" refers to the entire human person. Soul signifies the spiritual principle in man by which he is created in the image of God. CCC# 364: A body is "human" precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul. It is the whole human person, body and soul that is intended to become a temple of the Holy Spirit in the Body of Christ. CCC# 365: It is because of its spiritual soul that a body becomes a living human body. Spirit and matter in man are not two natures united but their union forms a single nature. CCC# 366: At the moment of human conception God provides the human soul. The human soul is immortal and does not perish when separated from the material body. The immortal human soul will be united with its human body at the final Resurrection Genesis 2:7: Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, and man became a living being. CCC# 362: The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual. The Biblical account expresses this reality in symbolic language when it affirms that "then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." Man, whole and entire is therefore willed by God. CCC# 363: In Sacred Scripture the term "soul" often refers to human life or the entire human person. But "soul" also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him, that by which he is most especially in God's image: "soul" signified the spiritual principle in man." [Matthew 16:25-26; John 15:13; Acts 2:41 in which Scripture defines soul as the human life of the entire person; see Matthew 10:28; 26:38; John 12:27; 2 Maccabees 6:30 in which "soul" signifies the spiritual principle in man]. CCC# 365: The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the "form" of the body: i.e.,, it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living human body; spirit and matter, in man are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature.

@@CatholicProductions I'm not so sure about that. When you say 'a serious reason,' it kind of has a connotation of emergency. But from what I've seen, it's a simpler reason - one bishop cannot visit every parish in his diocese in a fairly tight period of time (kids aren't confirmed at Easter Vigil, but everyone prefers it be near the end of the RE year).

Hi Dr Brant, a little off topic but i have been trying to find in the bible on where does it say that Philip is a deacon. I came across Acts 6:3-5 where 7 deacons were chosen. Where does it say that the 7 are deacons?
@AmericanBerean
@AmericanBerean 4 года назад
'deacons' is the term applied to those who would take care of the business in verses 1 and 2, in order to free up the bishops (apostles) to preach and teach. Thus, the seven men chosen to do that were deacons. The man in the office of deacon is specially ordained by a bishop, as in Acts 6:6, and down through time to today.

a scriptural basis for, but not a scriptural account of, confirmation. in the current practice, baptized children need to come to the age of reason BEFORE they are confirmed, and what that means as well is that, in the sacrament of confirmation, the baptized speak on their own behalf; parents and godparents (and the Christian community) no longer speak for the baptized child, but the baptized now in his or her own name speaks for himself or herself. that is what the Holy Spirit does in this case, ENABLE or EMPOWER the baptized to speak in his or her own name, and thus OWN for himself and herself the mission of WITNESSING... so yes Dr. Pitre is correct on the point of the sacrament, but he seems to have left out the fact that, in Catholic practice in any case, the baptized must have attained the use of his or her reason. in the early Church in fact, there was only the sacrament of baptism which, from our understanding of the sacrament of confirmation today, was ALSO the sacrament of confirmation because the early Christians were all adults. the sacrament of confirmation grew out of the need created by the fact of INFANT BAPTISM in the early Church...

And obviously you did not pay attention to Pitre in this video. He tells you about Philip, who baptized many people in Samaria, the Peter and John had to lay their hands on them, so the people could receive the Holy Spirit...... Acts 8:5-17 So there is your scriptural account of confirmation.

From 2001 to 2010, the Holy See examined sex abuse cases involving about 3,000 priests, some of which dated back fifty years.[11] Diocesan officials and academics knowledgeable[who?] about the Roman Catholic Church say that sexual abuse by clergy is generally not discussed, and thus is difficult to measure.[12] Members of the Church's hierarchy have argued that media coverage was excessive and disproportionate, and that such abuse also takes place in other religions and institutions, a stance that dismayed critics who saw it as a device to avoid resolving the abuse problem within the Church.[13] In a 2001 apology, John Paul II called sexual abuse within the Church "a profound contradiction of the teaching and witness of Jesus Christ"
