Confiscated #AfricanGrey who we have named #Apollo is recovering well after horrific injuries left untreated.
Apollo was removed, with permission from his new owner, so that we could get him #veterinarycare. he was allegedly given to an animal feed business owner, who has an aviary of an assortment of parrots on his business premises. This is in contravention of #citybylaws and #EnvironmentalAffairs laws promulgated by our legislation.
in brief, we had, as we usually do, visited this business where they store, package and sell animal feed, to purchase certain products. we buy in bulk twice a week. recently we noticed the aviary he has installed on the premises was getting fuller and new birds seemingly added every visit.
This is the 3rd occasion that we have had to advise him that there is an injured bird in his now overcrowded and unhygienic aviary. I have removed one, a #ringneckparakeet which he wouldn't release without my buying him. This #AIS fledgling bird was visibly sick.
I asked if I could take him to our #avianvet because he had no intention of doing so. in any event I ended up paying for him so I could take him to the vet.
The second occasion was a couple of months ago where the owner was not at the factory, and I asked his manager if I could enter the aviary to examine the #lovebird who was covered in blood and had visible open injuries. the manager opened the aviary and I asked him to video the bird and send it to the owner, with a request that I be allowed to remove this bird and take him to the vet. the manager said the owner wanted to talk to me and handed me the phone. without being give the opportunity to describe the injuries that were obvious in the video his manager sent him, he became extremely rude and aggressive and refused to allow me to take the little lovebird to the vet. he demanded I leave his premises. I do not know the fate of this precious angel.
Last week I accompanied Craig to the factory to purchase our weekly animal food - ,we go twice a week. I personally stopped supporting his business but because it is more convenient, our other members continued buying from there. in the aviary which is now overcrowded and filthy to the point that the smell is overwhelming Craig immediately noticed a seriously injured #Africangreyparrot standing on the floor of this aviary.
Despite my not having been to his premises and personally withdrawn all my support, I informed him that I was taking the bird regardless, because these head injuries were fresh and his head was actually swollen. we saw immediately the bird's one eye was missing. his nares were covered with blood and his top beak injured. his right eye was very swollen and blood filled. while my relationship with this person is destroyed, Craig managed to persuade him to allow us to get very treatment. he said the bird had just arrived in that condition but would not tell us the breeder's name. Apollo is an adult and with full wings indicated he was just used as a breeding bird.
He agreed to allow us to take him for medical treatment and we removed him there and then. After cleaning him up it was obvious (and confirmed) that his eye had been bitten out. there were bite marks on his head, nares and beak and blood clotting in his other eye which was developing a grey film over it. The new owner had, as he is known to do, trade in birds, but had no intention of taking the bird to the vet. The fact that the bird was in a strange filthy environment and blind, it did not occur to the owner that the #parrot would not know where to find food or water, and was drastically traumatized.
We have provided the medical attention he so desperately required, and have set up an environment where he can and has familiarise himself where the water is, seeds, and his daily fresh veg or #AviPlus @AviProducts
While originally terrified at any sound, he did, with the first 4 days start showing signs that he may have partial sight in the eye which had the grey film. His head injuries have been monitored and we continue with treatment, and there is a massive improvement in what were just open, blood covered wounds. To my utter amazement and joy he has found his way around the cage we have placed where he has human interaction most of the day, #specialneeds grey, #Everest has befriended him and they chat up a storm. he also does not give out that terrifying scream when he hears my voice or I'm changing his food bowls.
He has found his way around and out of his cage but just needs guidance to find his way back. His very survival after such an attack, is in itself a #miracle and we feel blessed that we were at the right place at the right time to get him treatment, and are in a position to care for and rehabilitate him, and take away his pain.
Former breeding birds who develop disabilities have a really difficult time adjusting to living such a different life, and it takes a while to earn their trust #fallenangelsbirdsanctuary

Bless you for caring for these sick and injured birds. Glad he is improving and more calm. Where do you live? Seems like this needs to be reported. In my country we have animal cruelty laws etc.

This is absolutely horrendous. Any human who can turn a blind eye to this suffering is inherently evil. Such lack of compassion is incomprehensible 😔
