Wanting to shoot a short action sequence as something of an equipment and choreography test, we decided to (loosely) based it on the Witcher computer games.
Before anybody asks: no, neither character is supposed to be Geralt. There are many other Witchers. And, yes, we know his eyes aren't Witchery all the way through - that would have added considerable time to the schedule, and we're now fully committed to the upcoming Arms Race web series!
Thanks for watching, as ever.
Oh, and The Witcher 2 just came out on Xbox360. If you haven't played it yet, GO GET IT NOW.

The mist was indeed fully CG. We hadn't planned for it, but it certainly helped set the atmosphere in those opening shots.

You did a great job on it, I wasn't sure, thanks for clearing that up!

Great fx. I'd love to see full series with Geralt.

Nice job ! I hope to reach the same level for my very first short film, in the next few weeks.

Yeah, as we mentioned in the description, this was very loosely based around the Witcher. We used the setting more to give the fight/VFX test a bit more of an interesting flavour. But we'd love to have a proper go at a full-on Witcher live action short one day.

I'd love to hear more about how you approached the choreography

This short was a bit of an experiment for us in terms of choreography and time constraints. We only had half a day to shoot the entire short and so couldn't fully choreograph, rehearse and shoot a full fight scene. Instead we used Christopher and Tom who are both trained and good friends and tried rehearsing a few of the moves (the start, the end and the transition where the witcher first starts to win) and the rest is mainly them sparring. Kicks were mostly kept out because it made it more difficult to edit and they don't look very dramatic without the right camera angles. The camera work was done with two cameras shooting one character each and just going with the flow of the guys fighting. We got the opening scenes, the initial attack and then the guys went at it for a bit ad lib-ing the fighting. We broke, reviewed footage, got a couple more shots of Christopher winning as he's a big softy and kept backing off and then got the remaining set pieces to the fight to put a middle and an end in. Total time to shoot was about 3 and a half hours. All in all it wasn't the best fight scene we can shoot and we know it has issues, but in the time we had it is a lot longer and a lot quicker paced than we could have gotten by doing a fully choreographed fight. Lessons learned both positive and negative but we certainly enjoyed shooting it so we hope you enjoy it for what it is and thanks for watching.

Except that it refers to Drowners, which are creatures exclusive to the Witcher's world, as well as Loredo, presumably Bernard Loredo, the Commandant of Flotsam from the Witcher 2.

I really liked it. The mist was "made" and not FX or was it? I guess a "boxing only" fight gets a bit boring because we might be used to wider movements (more falls, kicking, "swirls") that appear more dramatic (a punch in the head will hurt you, too, but a kick -being a wider movement is more "action"). I did like the fights- it was fast enough and noone seemed to be hurt too badly, I guess that's pretty hard to accomplish.

Overall I thought it was a good attempt. Most effects were nice but could have benefited from better blending and toning down a bit (especially the eyes). The biggest issue was the fight choreography, just keep experimenting with better angles and pacing and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Nontheless, well done I enjoyed it.

Yea that had nothing to do with Witchers other than the eyes...but ok if you say so.
