Thank you. I read Confucius when I was just 13 years-old, loved it and understood it which says a lot about the his teachings and the way they're conveyed! At 83 now, and I'm glad to see his teachings renewed and easily spread online, it's a beginning though nothing replaces a book in hand, reflexion and sentences underlined to go back over and over.

" OUR GLORY OF NEVER FALLING, BUT OF RISING EVERY TIME WE FALL " many THANKS to CONFUCIUS from ' The City of Angel ', Bangkok. As a China-born, Thai national of 76, I had been through over 30 professional jobs in the span of 50 years & ' RISE & RISE, AGAIN & AGAIN ' every time I FALL ...... CONFUCIUS has taught us - not to GIVE-UP!
correct, in confucian culture there is a subject book titled in the beginning the 15 Chinese words explains the way to be the super natrual beings, to the heaven what in the Holy Bible, how to get the qualification to be with the God. Chinese traditioanl curlture almost the same thing as western civilization.
Strange they didn't talk about Confucius Opium use, he was a big Opium user. Stating, he who smokes more than 2 pipes a day is an addict. In todays China the Confucianists risk life in prison to use opium .
Great video for an HK Chinese in America. I had a lot of these teaching when I grew up even under British colony education. That is the soft power of China no matter who is in charge or in any period. 4000 years of history and continuous civilization were unusual in any human society. 2000 years of these virtues of 君子: 仁, 義, 禮, 智, 信, 忠, 孝, 節, 義, 誠, 恕, 廉, 勇, 溫, 良, 恭, 儉, 讓. are the high bar for any human or society to achieve, but a goal for everyone. These are the recipe for success for any nation. Some were doing better than others in Asia. I am glad China leaders were promoting one of the Chinese gifts from our ancestors.
I really am inspired by the ethics of his ideas. Empathy, working together and being compassionate to others is something I will always stand by. These ideas need to be taught in American school systems, having discipline and empathy are so very important... It would change the world if everyone could see through his lense of what it means to be human, and how each of us play a part in the whole-- whether in society or in the family. When we are all treating each other well and looking out for each other, less malice and hatred spreads and that love and care will lead to a healthier people and a mindful individual and thus, a healthy world.
He embodied the true definition of EDUCATION...educating the mind/body/soul. When you invest in a family, then it's transferred to the community and then your Nation..What the world could be if only.........
He meant it for the Chinese .. NOT YOU! Thats why they bribe the corrupt they encounter .. in Africa and rest of the world .. to dissuade them from practicing the very things confusion master taught to the Chinese..! Confusion master prepares you.. for enslavement.. if you dont believe confusion teachings are like islamic taqqiya.. watch what the chinese do all over the world!

Thank you for presenting this careful and scholastic biography of Confucius. This program has very much improved my point of view of Confucianism and of Chinese culture and history. My dear wife from the Philippines has Chinese ancestry, from the oy family which under Spanish rule was rewritten as Aboy, Baboy, etc. I had the good fortune of having a Chinese step grand father, Chow Din Yee, the only family father figure I’ve ever known. I’m a Roman Catholic Christian. As such, the Catholic Church has long recognized Plato and Aristotle as exemplary pre Christian examples to be esteemed. Watching this I personally feel that the church should hold Confucius in the same esteem. Several centuries ago there were Jesuit missionaries to China whom attempted to have the Christian faith expressed in Chinese cultural terms to the Chinese people’s but unfortunately the church of that period insisted the faith be taught and expressed only in Western, Latin terms, a culture, history and tradition unknown to Asia. The values he developed and taught have long been my life’s leaning. I will need to replay this video to pick out the teachings. I pray that the Communist party may become Confucius - ised and not the other way around. Again, thank you. Dale Clifton Olmstead, a commoner, bottom of the ring citizen, like Confucius.
Confucius was good or great in part at the old time, but Confucius is not great at all now. His words were just some rules and doctrines, criticisms and discriminations , judgments and labeling, there were no common equality, no humanity respect, no individual freedom which are fundamental for modern society. Do believe in Confucius, it's just like a mother tell you what to do and what not to do!such theory is unless in different societies and circumstances. The "sanzi jing "is totally fooling doctrine, trash of Chinese culture.

I really appreciate the Confucius teachings, the more I understand the more I'm touched by it, what a remarkable realization it was/is since almost 600 years before century! I've only picked up this teaching after my 30s, Amazing teachings, it resignate with my inner voice, life experience, self reflection and the reflection of the troubled world.
If Christianity had taken hold in China the western nations would have sucked it dry . Its a good thing it didn't Dale . The mayhem and madness Abrahamic religions unleased goes on to this day .
I love history, i haven't been ever tired of watching, reading history magazines, it is so important to know what has happened in the past, trying to understand why certain things are done, and certain behaviors of others, people, cultures and so on. Thank you so very much . What a marvelous idea.!! Love your pages.
I'm 93 now 20 years ago we went to Shandong province to visit Confucius along with our group of tourists bought a little book of sayings by Confucius today thanks to youtube I'm watching stories of Confucius!
thats so beautiful, imagine having records of your family dating back to the time of confucius. i dont know anything about my family other then my great grandfather came from sweden. its sad how many peoples history has been forgotten
Being a Chinese, I have to read the English translations for the classic Chinese or literal Chinese to understand more quickly. I actually understand the words, but the information is so condensed that I need a long pause to comprehend it. That's the beauty of literal Chinese when you don't have paper, you must push the conciseness to an absolute limit and save the space. There is no other language that can interpret so much information in 30 characters. “天下君王至于贤人众矣,当时则荣,没则已焉。孔子布衣,传十余世,学者宗之"
@9ja Warrior It basically says kings and nobles lived flamboyant lives, were surrounded and embraced by gentlemen, then died with few remembering them, while Confucius lived a humble and frugal life as a scholar, passed on a legacy that lasted for eternity, and had innumerable followers after his death.

The personne narrating this story has such a beautiful voice. It's so soft and gentle that it feels like an elder is reciting an old tale passed down through the ages.
Thank you for such a wonderful production! Confucius was literally 600 years ahead of his time... It's practically a miracle that his texts and teaching survived such a long period. Just think, how much of today's teaching would survive another one or two hundred years - let alone six hundred.
Confucianism is in nature Evil. I wish you could first encounter its culture then make an evaluation. Its a lunatic cult that worships power and hegemony.
tom kearns Nope, communism is better then Confucianism. Please understand that the worlds biggest religion persecutors were the Confucianists. Thousands of temples were burned and millions killed in the name of Confucius. You are clearly disconnected from Eastern Asian troubles.
@SMA Productions lol no, ther was a so called brother of jesus in Qing China, he caused the Taiping rebellion let to 20 million+ deaths and Then people started to hate the Christians. And understandably so. They were also connected with the colonizers, so Christians aren't very much liked
Based on my grandmother influence, became a teacher in the USA. Then i went to study Oriental culture in the University of Shanghai. It was the best experience of my whole life. My name is Darío Mendoza (USA),
Excellent documentary to honor the life of Confucious who is the gretest philosopher of the world. Although I was born in a very small village called Guarey in the province of La Vega, the Dominican Republic I was exposed to Confucius teaching because my grandmother who was also a mid-wife o comadrona, used a lot proverbs to talk to me and some of then were from the oriental philosopher.
It's terrible. As a Chinese, I want to say that Confucianism has kept China in a strange cycle of dynastic cycles for thousands of years, resisting modern civilization and resisting everything that develops.
@@xuanchu7152 Funny, in Japan it is the other way around. Confucianism making the way for modernity and the Meiji restoration. The fact is that China is not fit to practice the teachings of Confucius.
I think we need more Confucius in the world. I really like the idea of government officials having to pass a rigorous exam on law, morality and competence. Maybe if more US law makers knew and understood the constitution, we wouldn’t be in so much trouble.
@@zelenplav1701 I just hope it's just him thinking. I hope no one take it literally. It's something that the uneducated take it as true and practice to the extreme. The worse case was of the Holocaust and to WW2.
I think education system really should adopt some of Confucius' ideas and teaching kids about social practice. Treating everyone with kindness and respect. Stopping bullies in the school.

I worked in documentary production for years as a production assistant and asst. editor, especially in the PBS circuit. I can't stand how academic experts talk in these things - the tone, the enunciations. They literally read off a script and do multiple takes in order to sound as distinguished as possible, like they are actors playing a role of a wise person. Don't get me wrong; I love good historical documentaries, but I wish they would just talk like a normal person.
Is that the specialist or the director's choice? I too can do without the tearjerking montage, but they want to emphasize how ancestral and deep the subject is and evoke some sense of reverence.
Dan Snow your programs and documentaries are outstanding and brilliantly done. An added bonus is you being so bloody dashingly handsome. Well done Sir.
As "The art of war " of Sun Tzu is used in many military academy, the 5 Classics of Confucius must be used for every one who want to become a leader of a country.

Confucius mentioned it should back to the age of the ancient Zhou dynasty(周) that was filled with peaceful coexistence, unlike people have known. 1:02:23 / Such these traditional neo-Confucianism ceremony has been copied from Sungkyunkwan(成均館), South Korea. The origin of the ceremony was Confucius Shrine and maintained until when the Chinese Civil War(國共内戰). But since of defeat china's republic, Confucius's descendants were dragged into Taiwan island by Chiang Kai-shek, and Confucius Shrine was destroyed by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution. Fortunately, South Korea remained that traditional neo-Confucianism ceremony despite Korean War and Korea under Japanese rule. Recently, Chinese experts rebuilt that ceremony again through reference to its Joseon Dynasty(Korea) traditional ceremony.
My respect and congratulations to the Chinese people Beautiful and very sentimental documentary , brought tears to my eyes . I wish one day I will visit China .
The problem is that majorities Chinese and Chinese government today not even practice this method. If they do they will gain so much respect around the world. The Chinese government today is totally against the idea of Confucius.
I'm reading my book of Confucius sayings I bought at his hometown of Kufu when we were traveling to Shandong province 1980 just now while watching this video!

....after 400 years, we cannot know if any of this man's life or his stories are true... I wish this delved deeper into the true motivations of everyone from Confucius himself through his biographers and who was supporting/paying for those works.
I've watched his movie and his teachings. Confucius is a man we need in every generations. But Confucius confused the ruler and his Cabinet during his time. He deserved better.
What do you mean that "Confucius confused the ruler and his Cabinet during his time"? I feel like his teachings got lost in translation and might have been slightly misinterpreted... I am a Chinese American, deeply bitter and soured by his influence and teachings (because it's deeply rigid)... and yet, I find myself changing my views after watching this documentary... and am left with feelings of respect and admiration. So I'm trying to unravel my own baggage and educated myself here.
He was living in a time of total war, chaos, and warlords. Yet he asked the ruler's need to "behave" themself and priority the people first of above all. Of course, he got shunned away. He was lucky that he didn't get executed by those warlords...and even more lucky that his words were even passed down to us.
wow i didn't know too much about Confucianism before watching this. i thought it was just about hierarchy and rules but wow this is actually very interesting
Thoroughly enjoyed documentary on Confucius. Fascinating summary of Master K'ung's life & teaching, & introduction to history & culture of his contemporary China.
@马列驱逐炎黄 I am sorry you misunderstood my English. I specified 'his (Confucius') contemporary China' i.e. the culture of 6th century BCE China, the time when K'ung Ch'iu lived, not contemporary China of 2020's. Perhaps I did not make myself clear. The Master said, 'It is enough that the language one uses gets the point across.' The Master said, 'I once spent all day thinking without taking food and all night thinking without going to bed, but I found that I gained nothing from it. It would have been better for me to have spent my time in learning.'
Awesome, wonderful, outstanding documentary on the Great Man, Confucius. He says to one of his disciples Tseu Ma Nieu' " Think before you act, you will earn honor and glory."

It would be nice for once to see real documentaries and not propaganda Confucius was a military general lnown for his fury. He put to death dozen of people, dancers, dwarves just because they displeased him None of the confucius teaching date from his lifetime, but were writings during the Han state several hundred years after his death. The few writings considered from him and his students who were all soldiers speak about war, states, victories ... Unfortunatly documentaries are for business making money and not to educate people. Go and read scholars writings
@Ben Louis there are lots of words like this. there is no weight in human wisdom. confucius has some words nice, but donot make it GREAT! you can always pick nail in trash, but it does not mean trash is useful or meaningful.
When I was 14 I read Confucious. Then I read Machiavelli and it was like the Sun had shone, blotting out the fortune cookie philosophy of the Chinese sage and dissolving it into the nothingness from whence it came.
First cam the Tao, Buddhism - Confucius - Jesus. Some of the exact dates are not exactly known... So I just used the order. I would imagine that some of the Indigenous Tribes also had they own type of philosophers and holy people. Some of the worlds greatest teachers never recognized their own success. What a beautiful story about Confucius.
Its crazy how this video is entirely about the respect and love a family should have for each other . How many babie girls have been butchered in China the last century anyone want to remind me
It is the best way to ensure future generations are people with common decency , respect in order to be respected , basically extend whatever you want because that is how you get it back because humans are not born bad , they pick whatever along the way of growing up and that is where the parents play the most vital part . Parents have to teach and lead by example . Not like what we can see in some western families when you see a 6 year old son using an expletive on his mother openly and as shocking as that was to me , I was more saddened by the lack of guidance which has transformed a 6 year old for the worse . I believe that we brought our child into this world and not by his or her asking but because we wanted and I think it’s only fair then to do everything we can to make sure our child grows to be a decent , honest and useful person . To not do it is like sentencing our child to a life of difficulty , hardships and probably shame . That is why I believe in this master’s teachings and I still recall the first proverb I heard from Confucius and that had me glued ever since , in an argument the first one to raise his hand is the loser !
While I like Confucius, learning about him, and the fact that his philosophy is still taught and there are still people descended from him today, the idea that you had adhere this restrictive behavioral routine and "have to" live up to the name, I think, is a very old fashioned and cruel thing. It takes away the free will and courage to live one's life to the fullest, the way "you" want to live it.
Confucius understood Jesus Christ ways and lived by Jesus Christ teachings...in turn he, Confucius, was practicing and teaching what Jesus Christ tried to teach everyone. The Ten Commandments honor thy mother and thy father. Confucius reminded me of Jesus Christ teachings. Confucius is not a god.. But blessed and graced by God not by an animal. God blessed and graced Confucius and he did God's will here on earth. It all comes down to what Jesus Christ tried to instill in the human race. Virtue, humility, love, compassion, and forgiveness. Confucius was just repeating Jesus Christ ways and wording it to sound differently. That was the first thing that came to my mind...and this documentary was nice but Confucius is not a god nor Jesus Christ. Praise and glory are all God's in heaven not people on earth.
@@jlingviolin yes I did miss that part. As a matter of fact I like it so much I'm getting ready to watch it again. It was a fantastic documentary.
