By simplifying the marcha pattern (changing the heel/toe pattern to primarily toe) Ben shares his approach to playing Up Tempo Latin Jazz on one Conga Drum.
PLEASE consider: at fast tempos a "swing", or triplet feel, becomes "crunched" into a straighter 8th note feel. There really is no such thing as "The Jazz Feel". There are many feels to all music. Listen to a wide variety of jazz drummers and you will hear ride patterns that vary from wide open triplets, to strict triplets to straight 8th notes and everything in between!
Ben uses an excerpt from the song Oleo (Sonny Rollins) performed by the 1958 Miles Davis Sextet for educational purposes to demonstrate playing along to fast jazz with conga drum.
Drummers - please note that when recording a conga part in the studio you may want to abandon the marcha pattern (riding eighth notes) altogether and simply play a slap on 2 and open tone(s) on 4. Whatever the accent pattern (combination of slaps and open tones etc) you choose to play, leaving out the marcha, or ghosted eighth notes, can leave you with a cleaner sounding track with less likelihood of flamming between any other rhythm instruments being tracked.
I also forgot to mention in this video the importance of playing along to music without headphones or earbuds. While developing your feel and touch you must be hearing your drum directly or you risk overplaying (playing too loud) as well as failing to develop the subtle tones your hand creates on the drum head. Set up external speakers either in front of you or behind you and play along to the music at a medium volume while trying to keep your playing volume below that of the speaker's output. This way you can hear and "play along with" the recorded musicians.
