Congolese Rumba, also known as Rumba Lingala after the country's predominant local language, and also sometimes called High Life, is a popular genre of dance music that originated in the Congo basin during the 1940s. The style gained popularity throughout Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. This is a mix of that music on 45 rpm records that my parents got when we lived in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa, Zaire) during the mid-1960s. They brought them to America. The signature style of this music is that everything leads up to its masterful guitar solos and horns. Infectious! Ganga monoko!! (That means "Shut up!" in Lingala!) Most of these are originals that pre-date their re-issues during the 1970s in places like Kenya. So some don't even show up on Google. Also mixed in are a few Nigerian cultural songs as an intermission. (A couple of DJ miscues included, sorry about that!) This music was popular throughout West Africa from Zaire to Ghana to Nigeria during the 1960s/70s. Enjoy!
