I feel that normalizing this will her a lot of younger people in the process. Physically people will try everything to become like their idols/influencers. Mentally when they can't accomplish this they will break down for the simple reason of chasing a unicorn. Socially they may find themselves unattractive because they don't meet the new social norms leading to less inaction with others. All theory but possible. 😊

Everytime you feel ugly, go outside look at other real people! Even the prettiest person irl looks like a human. The internet is basically just like the sims now. The internet is like a CGI landscape full if avatars and shouldn't be considered anything else but that. Remeber your a cute meat suit and its time to go outside and see other carbon based life forms ♡ Edit: Wow crazy, I did not realize this blew up till 4 months later! Seeing peoples responses has been so interesting. I'm really surprised by the people who thought I was angry or jealous! Just an interesting reminder to myself that we all read peoples tones differently in our heads. To all the people that feel ugly outside, I wish you the best on learning to love yourself in spite of that feeling. Your worth is so much more than how you are perceived

Your right. Theres one girl who has a perfect body in my eyes and I always used to be jealous. But she has acne and maybe she is jealous of someone else who doesn't has acne🤷‍♀️. I think one has to keep in mind that when you compare urself to someone who has your dreambody(or anything else) that these people might be comparing themselves too. Nobody is perfect and thats ok. We don't need to compare urselves to other people.

kind of the same for me! I deleted tiktok straight out of the pandemic, twitter a few months after that. only instagram posed a problem since I use it to talk to my friends on the daily, have my class gc on it, etc. and usually gets "sucked " into it when I only opened the app to check my messages. fortunately, I'm really clumsy so I broke my phone a little before the summer of 2021, so I installed instagram on my computer to be able to talk with my friends. Instagram on computer is sooo much less 'hypnotising" so I almost immediately stopped staying on it. When I got a new phone I didn't install instagram on it and now I'm almost 1 years off of all kinds of social media (youtube being the exception but I only watch educative videos on it so I don't mind it really). never felt better. a lot of my friends ask me how am I so happy and confident compared to all the people my age (it is to that extent!) and I got 3 of them to delete tiktok :)

I remember my ex didn't even recognize her when they first met because he'd only seen her filtered photos. Lately it's getting worse to the point where I don't even realize it's her when she pops up on my timeline until I check the username. It's like watching someone have an insecurity mental breakdown in front of you.

Same with my friend. She’s one of the most popular girls in my city, she has thousands and thousands of followers because in her instagram she literally looks like a goddess, but she doesn’t even look like herself anymore. Not her body, not her face, and it’s not even that she doesn’t look like herself it’s that it has gotten so bad she does not even look human in pictures, she looks like a doll. And you know what’s the saddest part? That she is actually really pretty, like really fucking pretty. But when people see her in person and see what she actually looks like they say she’s ugly just because they were expecting and angel from heaven, which makes her edit her pictures more and the vicious circle goes on and on. She started editing her pictures and even at the beginning people could notice but now it has completely gotten out of hand. Tho she is my friend I had to silence her insta bc it gives me mad dysmorphia, a lot of times I catch myself looking at her photos wondering how I can look like that and then it hits me that she doesn’t look like that either.

I've been working in fashion industry for many years (I'm a fashion photographer, model coach and stylist) and due to my job I've known how to edit the photos waaaay before the "filter era" has begun. I can recognize when filters are being used even ifthye're used in a very smart and delicate way... I can the plastic surgery on celebrity's faces etc. But that's not the case actually. I've edited such a huuuuge amount of photos in my life - ad campaigns, lookbooks, magazines, I've worked with gorgeous people, unique people. And still the clients would want me to edit them. They are NEVER beautiful enough, perfect enough... Literally. This is what the industry is doing, this is what the trends are doing - they make people wanna be unreal, unreachable and they create so many insecurities among everyone, even the top model (and models are actually some of the most insecure people tbh). I don't judge anyone who uses the extremely unrealistic filters, it's their choice. I do edit my photos sometimes too. But every time I get an urge to "filter" myself and modify my body, there's something "clicking" in my brain, in my head... And I just can't standing looking at it, because it's not me at all. And I am capable of making a "covergirl" photo / video out of anyone. This is just isn't right. At least for myself. Okay... This topic is definitely what's been bothering me for awhile, so I apologize for an endless comment. Love your videos, Zoe! 💗💗💗

@Can'tthinkofaname but think about why they find it appealing? the male gaze could be used in the media only but i am quite sure that all women have been affected by it and that's why we all have internalised male gazes or male perspectives. as a women myself, i have had a LOT of moments where i found myself unconciously wanting to dress to attract men, instead of dressing for myself or i find myself alone in my pjs thinking if i look good enough to attract a man. it's so normalised for women to be portrayed and sold as commodities for pleasure that it influences real life, i know many women who had the same problem as i did. trust me when i say that i have seen a lot of people especially men caring how a women looks like and it's not just for higher status

@user-yc8wt5rn6z
@user-yc8wt5rn6z Год назад
@Can'tthinkofaname I think you must have been upset by my comment by the way you have written yours. People do get influenced by the media. It is the responsibility of the producers to represent women and any other marginalised groups by having accurate and diverse representations. Without objectifying, fetishising or sexualising them. If they do represent abusive relationships they shouldn't gloss over them either, etc. I will give you an example, for COVID19, many news blamed China for the covid outbreak and many racist people went out to their way to do hatecrimes against east asian people and anyone that looked 'chinese'. Another thing, you are wrong about people not taken media seriously. And surprise, they are in that demographic. Beauty standards have been established and reinforced by media basing on the patriarchy, colonist ideals. For the fictional relathionships, I'm going to give you an example: There was an article about the percentage of Korean men being abuse towards women. In Kdramas, they do represent the guys who are abusive and toxic relathionships as these romantic, sweet things which are not. Many girls and adult women see this and think every korean guys is like this because of lack of exposure to real korean guys. You could argue that their audience is young people especially girls so they are easily influenced but trust me there have been women in 20s and more than 20s thinking korean guys are sweet or once they get in a relationship that is like the ones portrayed they think is sweet because thats how it was depicted. Thinking an entire ethnic group is one trait is obviously fetishisation rooted in racism but the problem is that this was because of lack of exposure to real korean guys. If you saw the immense representation done by male producers of objectifying, sexualising and having inaccurate representation of women OVER DECADES and how it has been cultivated in people's minds, you wouldn't be writing your comment in the first place. The whole men are breadwinners, strong, must not cry and women are vulnerable, commodities, caregivers are elements we see in the media today. Heteronomartive relationships, binary genders. People see this and think 'Oh this must be how it is then'. In conclusion, people do get influenced by the media whether it is passively or actively (more than you think). It would be great if what you said is true but the reality is different. I would suggest looking into sources that show representation and their implications on society, and how it overlaps with history of colonisation, the patriarcy, etc.
@user-yc8wt5rn6z
@user-yc8wt5rn6z Год назад
@Can'tthinkofaname The fact that you don't understand shows to me you missed the point completely and the mention of you as a young girl surprises but also doesn't surprise me either. It surprises me because I thought you would know that we do get affected by the patriarchy (in different ways depending on your race, sexuality, etc) and the male gaze is a result of it. If you *personally* don't know any guys that are like that then great for you, but the reality is different and trust me it has nothing to do with who I hang out with lmao. My friend group is composed of women, non binary people and non-straight men who are comfortable with their masculinity and are educated on social issues (they don't really specify their sexuality but they were comfortable enough with me to tell me they are not straight). I will really really doubt that THEY are the source of anything I said. 😭 I wouldn't be writing my comment if it wasn't because it is true, and not only my friend group but other women I have met in my life, different women who hang out with different people feel the same. This is a majority, not an individual case as you are implying and I have not only seen this in real life but also people who have talked about this in social media/ the internet. Ask yourself this question, why do you think your mom nags you of those sorts of things? If you never had that feeling of not wanting to appeal to guys then good for you once again, but many women feel different and that is what we should be focusing on, on the core problem, rather than making this an individualistic problem.

The most interesting ones are those with folds and folds and folds and distinguished bodyparts. It is beautiful in what shapes we all come in. We are just so interesting cause we all look differently and have parts that make us us. Like how much fun it is to draw a big nose or my bat wings (jello arms) or a thin belly with stretch marks. The female gaze isn't gawking at male abs - that's actually the male gaze too. @@milklover3158 I think you misunderstood. The gaze itself has nothing to do with what you like or what you look at. You can look at any part of any body with a male gaze. It means that a body is displayed with the intention to sexualize. The female gaze is not about looking at body parts that women find appealing, instead it's about looking at someone who is not portrayed in a purely objectified or sexualized way. The female gaze is more like representing people as empowered people with agency. You can look at movies for example - Compare the portrayal of Harley Quinn in the Suicide Squad (directed by a man) to her portrayal in Birds if Prez (directed by a woman). What I believe is that you should never try to not feel insecure saying that "everything is fake or edited ". What we should learn to do is to not compare ourselves to other people whether it's fake or real. Saying "everything is fake" gives people a wrong idea sometimes. If someone naturally has a body or facial features that considered beautiful according to the beauty standards, everyone is gonna start believing that it's not natural and hating on that person commenting things like "you're so fake" or "you just edit yourself". I understand what you're getting at, a while ago I saw on tumblr someone was saying the hour glass figure doesn't exist, and I'm just over here with that figure (but still not fitting the beauty standard because my waist still exists even if my hips and chest are wider). But I also think it's kinda wishful thinking to say people should just learn to not compare themselves to others. This does not address the fact other people are comparing them. When you're constantly bombarded with "You're not pretty but you can look pretty with these products" from the beauty and fashion industries, it's going to inch its way into your head.

I’ve been struggling with the concept of bodies being “in fashion”. My body shape has been glorified for quite a bit, the curvy lower body and small waist: but the reality of it is that I have stage 1-2 lymphoedema. While my body shape is constantly commented on as being “body goals”, my body itself is not the kind of body that is presented in the media with these proportions while still being impossibly smooth and without cellulite. It makes me feel as though my shape is fetishised but the reality of my body is not even good enough to the kind of body that I “should have”. It just feels so frustrating and makes me feel so bad.

A lot of the videos that show up are animals, food and landscapes because that is what I tend to click. Zoe your videos always have such an unapologetic honesty yet you discuss these hard-to-swallow subjects in such a way, it feels you’re talking to a friend. It really is sad tho when you see women commenting “I used to feel really insecure about this feature but now all of a sudden everyone wants this feature I naturally have and now I feel so proud about this feature of mine. I’m so lucky and so blessed.” Men’s body beauty standards have remained relatively consistent throughout history but for women, women have to wait until they hit the lottery and their body trends those couple of years. If you really sit and think about it, that’s incredibly SICK. You don’t feel beautiful, until society dictates that your BODY is the trend of the year. You don’t feel beautiful until a mere concept decides that you should feel beautiful. That’s so twisted. You have a right to feel beautiful because you’re you and no one and nothing else is allowed to dictate that. Why should you feel like shit for something that is not within your control? Why should you feel like you should waste so much time, energy, and money when within a few years, the trends will change and all that hard work you put in will only go to waste?

I think this “trend” really boomed during the pandemic when we’re all inside our houses and not be able to be outside. The thing about social media is you can be connected and disconnected at the same time. You can filter your photos and videos all you want but you can’t do that outside. It makes people "famous" because of purely surface and unimportant "values", and creates "influencers" who contribute nothing to society. Those people are damaging! If someone like me, who is much older and smart and should know better feels somewhat bad and insecure looking at these images, how do young impressionable people must feel? This is horrible and damaging on so many levels. There is narcissism, surface skin deep "values", voyeurism, exhibitionism, obsession with strings of completely useless short videos who take away time from young people that they could use to live, do something, anything with their lives except staring into screen. It creates deep rooted insecurity in young people about their bodies and looks, like they didn't have those enough already. I don't understand why this horrible thing even exists.

And Zoe your videos are gold 🥇 This is such an amazing content and I am so glad you made this. These are the kind of videos which makes us realise that not all the things we see are exactly true.

Love this. So true. What I hate is when people think it’s real, and compare your real body to the fake ones. Thankfully my husband and I started dating before video editing technology was mainstream and accessible, but I remember at campfires talking with his buddies they would bring up videos of women that were clearly highly filtered and his friends would talk about how beautiful the women were. It was really sad to hear they thought it was real.

Next question is how it affects the people using the filters. When they see they're body and face looking one way on an app and then looking in the mirror. I deleted TikTok a long time ago. It can be very addictive and detrimental to my mental health.

it's so unfair how social media prefers boosting videos where girls and boys are barely dressed instead of boosting talent! i post videos dancing both on ig and tiktok but with t-shirts or sweaters and they barely reach anyone, which is pretty upsetting

heres the thing that needs to be said- if you want skinny, you ALSO appreciate the less body fat on every part of their body dont expect big chestie besties and IF you like thick girls, appreciate the body rolls and the natural body phenomenan. get a real mindset cause all these people are insecure and want to look their best without getting called fat/skinny/or get bodyshamed

I had to learn how to use photoshop this year and it’s amazing what you can do with the software. I’ve gotten rid of double chins, fixed makeup, fixed facial expressions, color corrected entire photos, changed backgrounds, and added shadows and you can only tell if you see the original photograph. Humans are very good at picking out inconsistencies in the human face, but if you take time and photoshop something well you would never know the difference

on those tiktoks with photoshopped bodies, whenever someone comments that it's not real, there are invariably people that will earnestly reply that "some people just look like that though" ....no they don't. it's terrible for teens who are insecure about their bodies regardless. people should be more aware of filters in everyday life; they should talk about it in school in health class and stuff i think

@@aloha516 I’m not saying that you’re not as conventionally attractive as you claim. I’m saying you don’t look like the edited freak of nature in the intro for example. If you’re the skinny thick body standard, you can look in the mirror and see the way your fat naturally lies on your hips. Unlike the girl who edited herself to look like a wavy piece of bacon. If your skinny you can see the hip bones, maybe hip dips and ribs. I personally think that’s way more attractive than the edited ones but opinions aside, reality looks different than the edits and people should realize that.

This is so sad , like there are so many artists and good content creators who work for years and yet are unable to gain followers or grow on any social media platform , and on the other side there are people who do nothing and gain thousands of followers overnight .

So sick of the objections of bodies and it just gets worse over the years or just the same just different branding. I’m more interested in what I’m able to do with my body instead of my look or at least that’s what I’m trying to do.

i'm someone who doesn't necessarily leave the house on a regular basis but i had to go out with my friends to the mall for a girl's day out, i was feelin so conscious the previous day and was constantly questioning my body but the experience of going out was SO self-assuring. i saw so many people with the same body type as me who looked absolutely gorgeous regardless [because i have a complicated relationship with my body] and it made me realize that we only see a select amount of people on social media who fit the 'trending body' category and a majority of people look like you!! so chin up cause you're abso-fukcing-lutely amazing

Honestly it's so sad that 'filtered bodies' are the beauty standard now. It might get you views, but you can't always have a filter with you. Not only does it mess with your own mental health, it can also affect others. Loved what you had to say Zoe!! Lysm 🤍 (also your top was so styling ✨✨)

The funniest things is every time I see these unrealistic bodies irl, like tummy lipo and bbls and whatnot that look good online, they always look odd and out of place , like they look weird and disproportionate but it seems fine/looks good on my phone probably because we’ve seen it so much we’ve become accustomed to it, and now some of us even desire it

This is very interesting. I wasn't aware of the extent to which this is happening, because I don't use TikTok and on Instagram my feed is mostly art and cats. Can recommend to anyone :) partly because I want to keep it that way, I don't spend much time on the explore page, because there are constantly distracting videos of people talking thrown in between. I can actually feel my attention being drawn to that, because they're human faces and our brains are kinda wired like that. I think it's scary but also fascinating that these algorithms can reveal a lot about how the human brain works and what it responds to. But just because things are attention grabbing and can keep people on the app, doesn't mean they're healthy to be looking at all day long.

I have mixed feelings about filtering and body expectations. On one hand, the prevalence of filtering can result on overly high body standards. On the other, I know people who legit have those types of bodies naturally. I am friends with some, and I see them relaxed and chilling yet still looking like an Instagram model, to the point I feel uncomfortable. So, this gets me questioning exactly how unrealistic these standards are. Are they truly unrealistic? Is it just a shortcut for people too lazy to take care of themselves? Am I just surrounded by genetically gifted people? All of these make my head spin
