Yes, this is a stupid and self explanatory test. A 0.6 conical plastic cantilever vs a Microline stylus. In this record the difference may not be that great at first glance, but there's a world of difference between the two

It is kind of impressive how the cheaper cart sounds so good. Audio Technica are crushing it. Still, I've got the Microline and on some records it turns trash into gold near the end of a side.

Hello,I used many cartridges, I bought a second inexpensive turntable with the 3600L cartridge, and I was very surprised by the sound reproduction. I regularly listen to classical music concerts and I realized that this cartridge best recreated the atmosphere of a concert for me. What do you need to hear the breath of the clarinetist or the latest details of the mechanics of the instruments, in a concert hall you don't hear all these things, but music and that's what this modest 3600 cartridge does!

Hello, I forgot to thank you for your interesting video! I'd just like to add that the cheap turntable I bought is an Audio Technica AT-LP2X, automatic turntable, I just wanted to replace the felt with a good 4 mm rubber mat, it's a joy! I push the button and the needle gently settles on the record, no hissing, you can hardly hear the needle rubbing on the surface, silence and then, incredible music! I have a more upmarket turntable with a Goldring 1042 cartridge, so you'll no doubt think that that I'm stupid or that I don't know much about it? maybe, I'm 71 years old, I have a collection of 800 vinyl records, I know when music is good or bad, I let my ears guide me (they still work well) well if I'd discovered the AT-LP2X with its ‘little’ AT3600L cartridge, well before, I probably wouldn't have spent 900 euros (+- dollars) on more top-of-the-range equipment! Friendly greetings from Belgium😉

I think the red one are more clearer on the low and high frequency defines more treble and bass

It’s a shame AT doesn’t make anything other than a conical stylus for the 3600. It would be a far more accurate comparison if you could judge the results with different styli on the same body. But fortunately, official AT conical styli are available for the VM95.

Lp Gear Vividline is close for the 3600

I know the microline will and should easily outperform but the amount of sibilance with the 3600l makes me wonder if its misaligned. I put a 3600l on turntables I restore that don't come with cartridges worthy of replacing. I've never heard sibilance like in this video. I'm not defending the cartridge, it's an economical option and that's why I use them. That amount of sibilance really has me suspicious.
2 года назад
That sibilance comes from the particular mastering choices of this pressing. Normally the treble is attenuated for the last tracks of a side to reduce the amount of sibilance, but these brazilian "Som Livre" records don't attenuate the treble at all, which can make for some really interesting tests.

I have a Rega Planar 1 with the Rega Carbon (similar to the at3600) and it has sibilance and distortion on every single disc I try. New or otherwise, even good pressings from Speakers Corner and Analogue Productions. And it’s correctly aligned from factory, already double checked.

The record maight be worn at rhe inner groove from damage caused by misaligned and poor qualiry or worn sttlus that may have pkayed that same track on and on causing damage in the upper part of rhe grooves. Rhe ML cart reaches rhe deppest part off rhe grovve rharh is not so damaged. So the micro line sounds better. Still you can tell rhe grooves are damaged as there is audible distortion even wirh rhe At95nl. Might be poor mastering too.

Thank you very much for your work on this video👍. It is very useful. I have AT_VM95EN on my turntable nowadays and the IGD is annoying. I am intending to upgrade it to ML. So your video helps. I am vondering if there could be a difference between particular pieces of the same stylus type. If the grinding shape could be better from some manufacturing batch then other. I do not beleive that the eliptical shape should be so bad on the AT-VM95EN which I have. The distortion is huge. It is even slightly more annoying then on the AT3600L in your video. I made a setup geometry very carefully so I do not expect the problem is in my setup.
Год назад
Sometimes if the geometry is correct, maybe the VTA or vertical tracking angle is incorrectly set up. Did you calibrate your tracking weight with a scale? Because if not, then that could also be part of the problem.
@pavelzboril7041
@pavelzboril7041 Год назад
@ Hi, thanks for your answer. Yes, I checked the weight with a scale. It showed 1,97 grams if I remember well. I have also studied the cartridge adjustment and I think I undrstend the theory and my set up is correct. The IGD is not apparent on all of my records. But it is apparent on many of them and it can totaly ruin my mood 😄. I suppose it is connected with the record volume and the ability of the eliptical grinding of my stylus to "reed it". Your video confirmed that better stylus grinding can improve the distortion.

@@pavelzboril7041 Do you happen to know how many hours your stylus has? If it's brand new, it will take at least 12 hours of play before the sound becomes natural.
@pavelzboril7041
@pavelzboril7041 Год назад
@ The stylus is not new. I am expecting at about 200 hours of playing. I have checked the stylus with a microscope today and it seems to be OK (not worn).
Год назад
@@pavelzboril7041 200 hours is pretty close to the practical 300 hour limit of these styluses and, depending on how it was used, it can be worn out even if it doesn't look like it under a microscope.

The entire "fuzziness" of the harmonic distortion is almost completely gone with the microline, as it should :)
