Since he was a boy growing up on the border of Texas and Mexico, Dr. Torres has been fascinated by the folk traditions of Mexico and of his Mexican-American roots. Both of his parents were versed in aspects of herbal lore and healing, and as he matured, they taught him to love and respect the history and folk knowledge of the ancient art of curanderismo, or traditional healing. Currently a VP of Student Affairs at the University of New Mexico, he's never forgotten his love for the traditions of his childhood, and students come from around the world to take his summer class on those healing arts.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The body heals by referring to DNA, to repair the damage of an organ, unless the organ is absent. Then, cell division occurs, replacing the dead/damaged tissues. Cancer cells lose their ability to know they are damaged, and die... so they replicate uncontrollably. The body can also prioritize its healing, where if 2 systems are damaged, the body will use all the energy available to it to heal the more important damaged system, and then any left over energy will be used to heal the lesser system after the primary one is healed. Medicine gives the body energy, and information to heal, and also prevents infection, and inflammation from complicating the healing process. Some plants have compounds that can help repair damaged DNA, which allows the damaged system to heal more quickly, by healing cells that otherwise need to be destroyed by the body. A dead organ or an injury doesn't really hurt until it begins to heal. This is the body recognizing and addressing the issue. Pain is healing. A healer is an empath who can detect pain in another person, and develop medicine to treat that pain, hopefully healing the patient in the process.

I love this! What he is saying is true. Traditional Medicine is slowly changing. There are some doctors out there that are open to alternative treatments and the importance of treating not only body but mind and spirit too. Yet I must say you are fortunate if you find a physician like that as today the alternative treatment and integrative treatment centers have remained separate from the world of traditional medicine. Imbalance still remains there and unfortunately insurance companies do not cover alternative and integrative clinics. I enjoyed what he shared very much.

In china, the Papaya like hot water, if you have a sick or cough. Mom always told you drink hot water or you could not drink hot water. I believed that when you feel bad you can climb the mountain and when you get to top of the mountain just yell loudly. It could makes you feeling better. It is a wonderful research! Remember laugh aloud!

Wonderful video! When I was pregnant with my youngest son,I got really bad with a cold and high fever....my mom come and rub my body with Vicks VapoRub...put a bunch of leaves on my chest and my feet...and next thing I know I was fine in a couple of hours....no more fever...my husband jokes about my mom being a bruja 🤣...but seriously we will always thank her because we were really scared about loosing my baby or him getting affected because of the high temperature...thanks to my mom's old medicine we did well.

For thousands of years, it was unheard of to go to a doctor that has different religious/spiritual beliefs than you. That is because religion and spirituality are the primary sources for medicine and healing. It is not uncommon to have a “state” doctor be endoctrinated in sophistry, because they are taught to some degree that there is no spiritual foundation for science. They have the ability to sound 100% intelligent 1% of the time, and that is when they are talking to you, the customer. The rest of the time is a story for another time. 😂

Given that I consider the entire TED talk concept a kind of socio-pathology, it is only due to Dr. Torres' presentation that I have watched this. There is the danger, I fear, of continued wrongful attempts to "incorporate" traditional healing into allopathic medicine. I know - I NNOW that co-opting practices, as is the wont of Anglos, 9and I am of eastern-European descent), brings a superficiality and aberration of ritual that is unhealthy, and, ultimately, serves profit-making rather than healing. Consider how expensive it is to visit a curadero or curandera, and it is not - it may well be free, or there might be an exchange, and the cost of seeing anyone practicing "energy work," which should be free, or any of the other co-opted forms of 'healing'. Few can afford it. I understand why Dr. Torres would agree to a TED talk, but I hope that he will retain the truths, and not throw all into a blender. In most states it is illegal to lay hands - to touch - a person without having a license, or even a fake religious affiliation. Laws must be changed to exempt non-allopathic medicine from licensure and certifications. Alternatively, it remains an underground practice most everywhere.

Just FYI, the laughing thing is true. All those benefits he's listed are at least supported by big-name journals like Nature. I wouldn't doubt the benefits of papaya either, but I'm not sure I'd ever prescribe papaya instead of surgery if it's true necessary to remove an infection or something like that.
