I never realized the ring locks were frustrating, the only one I have is on woods equipment and it locks open until the shaft is seated, so it is by far the easiest pto shaft I own. I'd say it's better that way than the quick disconnects. It definitely varies tractor to tractor, on my Kubota with a quick hitch there is just the right clearance everywhere to reach through without much problem. My old Ford was awful and an adaptor like you are showing would have been great.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 месяца назад
That collar type lock is the same style that is on the PTO shaft for my mid mount mower, works great, slide it onto the PTO output shaft on the tractor and it automatically locks when seated, and unlocks very easily as well, and that is in a pretty cramped space to get to and isn't any issue. The rear PTO has a lot better access than the mid-pto so no need for that $400+ coupler at least in my usage. I can see where it would be useful if you got an access issue to get to your PTO on the back of a tractor, but not the case on mine....some tractors once you get an implement hooked up you got like no room back there to get to anything LOL.

That may be the greatest thing since sliced bread but you put on an older worn pto shaft and it’s going to wobble and vibrate like crazy. Anytime you add another joint in a shaft you’re going to add vibrations.

@@smallfarminnovations4265doesn't fix the spline wear on the tractor or the equipment. All your doing is amplifying the vibration by adding length. This is going to destroy PTO bearings and seals.

@@johnanderson1013When this is a concern, the adapter will add length to the tractor PTO shaft which is not unbalanced. When the adapter is installed and bolted together, it will shorten the PTO shaft which is not balanced, will lower the mass imbalance level at 540 CPM. I’ve been using PTO Link for the last few. years. Much better than struggling to line up splines, pull back ring, etc. That being said, I still struggle with PTO Link as it can be hard to pull out inner pin while trying to switch the PTO Link to disengage it. This design looks much simpler. I was going to give it a try until I saw that the basic two part unit is $450 and each plate to put on your implement is another $150. It would cost me over $1,000 to switch over. That’s a bit rich for me.

So first I didn’t read all the comments so I apologize if this was asked/answered but my go to concern is the strength of those tabs/nipples where the two pieces join. Any idea of what the shear strength is? I’m brand new to this stuff and learning from guys like you but in my mind it seems as though compared to the power and weight of the PTO and shaft etc that those little tabs would be the weak link. Any insight?

Can't see how that is easier than just sliding the pto on. The problem is that massive block of iron in your way called quick hitch, get rid of that useless piece of iron. Oh and the other side as well - manufacturers, not coming up with good norms and measurements for 3point and pto that are the same all over the world. A more serious innovation would be getting rid of that mechanical shit altogether and go electric. Just plug in a cable that doesn't need to be placed in the least accessible place of a tractor...

@@smallfarminnovations4265 I mean no disrespect. I know every product out there has a buyer.... just for me I'm still young I couldn't justify the cost because I have no problem hooking up ptos.... I still think this design is the pats easy change version of quick hitches. I think if you really wanted to bring this product to the next level I think having no splines or pins to lock together would be the best, have an internal catch that would lock once the pto is turned on then the centrifugal force of the pto would lock it, this way the pto can be connected at any point without ANY lining of pins truly making this even easier and a better product.

Quick hitch is a must....the PTO Link not so much....the only issue I've had is just getting the splines lined up, but having a tractor where you can put the PTO in "neutral" so you can turn the shaft by hand takes that problem out of the equation as well. All those things are, trying to solve a problem that regular maintenance would keep from happening. The PTO shaft is the least of the problems when hooking up an implement, its getting the 3 point hitch pins lined up to go on the 3 point hitch the first time....quick hitch kind of helps with that, until you find that most implements aren't quick hitch compatible, or are, but aren't depending on which quick hitch you have, probably need a couple different brands LOL...found out the Land Pride quick hitch isn't very quick with most implements as the top hook on it isn't adjustable (not much of a quick hitch at that point)....so I got one off Vevor for $200, and works with all my implements because I can simply pull 2 pins and raise or lower that top hook to match up with the implements....and the Vevor quick hitch was about 1/2 of the cost of the Kubota one....seriously Kubota you can't figure out how to build a proper quick hitch, yet you charge ridiculous prices for your implements.
@jlkkauffman7942

@@wildbill23canother thing with the quick hitch if you have a smaller tractor is it extends the length reducing the amount of weight you can handle, not to mention it’s also sloppier. Had not spotted this option before. A hint for regular hook up, I keep a brass brush in the box to brush out the PTO shaft and clean the tractor drive spline. If the tractor is off, you should be able to turn the shaft easily to line up the spline. You did not mention cost?
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 месяца назад
He mentioned they are about $430 for the set towards the end of the video....a lot of money to connect a PTO shaft. Yeah, keeping the splines on the PTO shaft on the tractor clean, as well as on the PTO shaft itself is a must, even using those quick connect couplers isn't a good idea if you don't bother to keep things clean and lubricated, it'll eventually just rust onto the shafts and you'll never get them back off...I haven't gone to the brush idea yet, I just been using a rag and wiping the shaft on the tractor off, and cleaning out the shaft side on the PTO shaft before connecting, and haven't had an issue, I use a spray lube as I go to hookup the PTO shaft, then wipe everything down after I remove the implement so it it don't collect a bunch of dirt.

Dude. Not been operating a tractor long, as I can see. Been farming for over 40 years. Have never had an issue with connecting a (PTO) Power Take Off. No issues connecting Silo fillers, Hay Bines, Mowers, Bailers, Hay Conditioners or that fact any thing that requires a (PTO) Power Take Off. First things first. Both side of the (PTO) Power Take Off shaft have to be clean and free of dirt. A little grease goes a long ways. A build up of dirt will defeat you each time trying to slide the (PTO) Power Take Off shaft over the splines of the shaft coming out of the tractor. Try taking better care of your equipment. You wouldn't have to rely on jerry rigged equipment created by someone who did not know any thing about farming. Try finding a different hobby other than one that involves tractors. You, give Farmers a bad name!

Or maybe you’re only thinking of everything from your perspective. The tractors and the implements that you’re using are probably very different than the ones I’m using. On a subcompact, there is no room for you to even reach in between the implement and the tractor and then there’s a big plastic guard and you can barely get your hands up to the mechanism that you have to pull and you’re extending out as far as you can reach It’s not about the shaft being difficult to slide I know it’s fun being a grouchy old cuss, but that doesn’t make it necessary

They are interesting devices, have thought about them but the price needs to at least halve to open my wallet. The shafts and collars do work well when clean and use a dry lubricant to lrevent dirt and greese buildup. The shafts and couplers only need a very small amount of lubricant to facilitate over coming friction during installation and removal - not operation. So, just by not using greese - which is what my father and grandfather had done, there would be little to no sticky buildup and the coupler will slide onto the shaft easier. Wet lubricant attracts dirt then acts like sand paper causing not only difficulty with install but premature abbration on the splines, wearing down the shaft spline's corners and causing the splines to ride up in wach other, which also makes install and removal hard, but more importantly decreasing the locking effect of the splines and could cause the damage to the U-Joint. So, just keep 'em clean with no wet lubs and all will be fine.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 месяца назад
Yeah they're extremely over-priced for what they are, and to solve a problem that doesn't really exist if you are paying attention, and keep the PTO shaft clean and lubed properly....biggest thing is people don't line the splines up right, then wonder why its a pain to install the PTO shaft, the other issue is they don't keep things clean, which makes installing and removing a PTO shaft a chore in itself.

First off, I've never had an issue connecting the splined shafts together except for the fact that for larger shafts hooking to bigger tractors, the things are bloody heavy. The adapter would compound that. Additionally, there's a reason for those multiple splines. Probably not a concern for a 4 foot lawnmower, but that adapter will twist up and break if it's carrying anything close to 80 hp or up. When it does, the pto shaft thrashing around loose will likely smash the tractor's pto shaft and break it right off. Good times. I've seen this happen with 540/1000 rpm adapters when they break.

Drawback IMO is that you change the geometry and have more leverage on the bearings of the PTO shaft on your tractor. I am no fan of this.

The one thing I really miss about my JD 2038R is being able to set the PTO to mid-mount so the tractor's PTO connection spins freely when hooking up a rear-mounted implement!

lol. I’ve had so many messages from people asking me to review these because they struggle with access to pull the ring back and force this shaft to slide. 90% of the problem in my experiences caused by the plastic guards that cover the mechanism and make the shafts stiff

@@smallfarminnovations4265 they actually make sense, this doesn't help, you still have to align the two pins, its an extra coupler that can cause vibrations, and a pto takes less than 5 seconds to hook up as it is.

Very cool. Now I just wish someone could come up with something to ease the hooking up of hydraulic lines for my skid steer and about 7 attachments.

The flat face couplers I think are the easiest to hookup....if your skid steer doesn't have that style of coupler you may try swapping them out and see if that helps, otherwise I don't think anything exists to make that any easier LOL.
