In this video I will show you how to set up and connect a hardware synth and drum machine setup from an empty desk to the final working setup. In the video I start with an empty desk and set it all up on camera start to finish including midi routing midi mapping and audio routing plus I go through what each piece does and how I have them configured.

thank you for the content, teaching is an art reserved for the few, I watch so many videos that say here is the sound I made, with the wires leading off screen, or the use of jargon reserved for a peer with the same level of skill, few that pick up the student & help them to the achieve the same, it's been quite a learning curve & an uphill climb you're a profit & a scholar

Thanks for this! I have been scratching my head trying to figure out how to get my midi keyboard to control/sync my Octatrack and Syntakt then sync/sequence my Blofeld with my Octatrack . I watched your other Midi tutorial and this video is the perfect part 2. You saved me a lot of headaches!

Thanks for this! I resist the Octatrack, but every profile touts its use as a mixer, and for DAWless, it may be practically essential, and so I keep going back to considering it. I appreciate the run-through; the MIDI routing was valuable information!

The Faderfox has its own Midi Thru and Midi Merge ports so I think you really do not need the midi boxes to make them work together. On page 6 of the manual there is a diagram of how to make connections and setup between an Octatrack and an Analog Four, so it would be exactly the same for the DIGIS. To do this, you have to use the MIDI OUT of the two Digis and send it again to the MIDI inputs of the Faderfox, then you have to set routing and the SYNC in the Faderfox so that the two machines work in sync. Just today I have connected my OT and my AK in this way and it works perfectly, although it is true that I feel that the AK has some latency in the Knobs, but the clock is perfect.

I recently came across your videos. they are so inspiring :-) Dawless is amazing... Im wondering how you set up or program/mapping the external midicontroler with the Digitakt or Syntakt? Is there a video?

So happy you are getting something positive from them! There are a lot of videos, but it really depends on the individual midi controller. That will dictate how it is programmed. The Launch Control XL that I use a lot is very simple to program using their online tool. Once you have entered the cc numbers and channels for each knob or slider, you just upload the new template to the controller. The PC12 is more complicated but you don't need a computer. It has a midi learn function that allows you to program directly while connected to the device, then you can save the preset. Each one is different. It depends on what you want to control with what. Thanks so much for watching!

Awesome your videos are the most real world practical combination set ups:) In 2024 is the launch XL and Fader Fox PC 12 the best for MIDI control for synths and drum machines or how about the Novation "SL" MK3 - many say that this is their brain and main clock output as well...thoughts? More menu diving or fast....pros and cons I did research on both and would like someone with more experience using the fader fox to see if this is the best option:). I don't want to be redundant and also see they have less knobs but it seems to be popular ... what would you suggest for a large set up of many analog synths and drum machines the Novation "SL" MK3, something else, or still the novation LAUNCH XL control with the Fader PC-12? Thanks!:)

I love the flexibility of the Launch control XL (and it is far less expensive than the Faderfox), but the Faderfox has a lot more assignable knobs for a large setup. The Novation SL is very different as it is a keyboard and it has e built in sequencer that can sequence other instruments. The PC12 and Launch Control XL are just assignable midi controllers. It all comes down to what you will use them for. THanks for watching!

Great demo! How do all the elektrons react when they receive a controller midi signal different from their current value? Does the value jump to the controller?
@tobiasflc630
@tobiasflc630 2 года назад
I don't own a midi controller like the fader fox, but that's actually (at least for me) a big problem. I think except the fader fox controller with an included display you get those annoying parameter jumps. So when you change a pattern live its super annoying isn't it ? Or maybe there is a workaround which I didn't get?
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
It all depends on the controller and how you have its settings, not the box being controlled. Most midi controllers have the ability to chose ‘skip’ which gives the immediate jump to the position of the knob, or ‘hook’ which you have to move the knob to the current value to ‘hook’ it before adjusting it. If your controller has endless encoders like most of the Arturia stuff, there is never and issue as there are not fixed knob positions. It assumes the current value then you just adjust up or down from there. I hope this helps. Thank you so much for watching!

Hi Surco, thanks for the tips and tricks. I'm looking to get a PC12 for my syntakt. However, my concern is: when I done twicking knobs in a Pattern, if I were to change to Pattern 2(or load a saved sound), will the PC12 affact the parameters right away (like causing midi numbers jumping)? Will that be annoying? Thanks
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 7 месяцев назад
Hey! Yes that’s an unfortunate issue when a controller doesn’t have endless encoders.
@MichaelMai
@MichaelMai 7 месяцев назад
@@SURCOlive I wish there is a endless encoder with 12*6 lol, because Syntakt has 12 tracks and has many parameters for its synths. it's very hard to control things without menu diving on improvising performance. Anything you would suggest to overcome such issue :) ?

@@SURCOlive Thanks. I'm planning to get PC12 for DT+DN setup. Wondering what other limitations could be. I'm trying to imagine how it will act when jumping form pattern to pattern....
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
it works really well for those. one thing to keep in mind is that the PC 12 will be mapped to CC numbers, and not specific functions. where this can be an issue is if you have it mapped to. a perimeter in a synth, then you change the synth, it will still be mapped to whatever parameter you had it mapped to before. it does not change based on the pattern. thanks for watching!

Tell please if I have digitakt only (but expect to buy Syntakt/Minilogue in future for synths) & want to dive into music live streaming to RU-vid/TikTok, as I understand I need mixer like Zoom Livetrak L8 connected to my Mac, is it enough to start with? Or I need to start with another mixer?

Not sure I’m understanding what the Octatrack is for here. Almost looks like it’s just a mixer for the Digis?
@SURCOlive
@SURCOlive 2 года назад
There is a section of the video where I talk about what each piece of gear is doing. Basically the OT is doing a number of things. One of them IS being the mixer for the DT and DN. Here is how I have the tracks being used: T1 Thru machine for DN to control channel FX and include it in the master for global performance FX T2 Thru Machine for DN for the same reasons T3-T6 Flex machines for longer samples that need to be time stretched since the DT can't do that. Examples would be Vocals, atmospheres and ambiance, melodics, etc. These can also be used as Neighbor machines for T1 and/or T2 if more channel FX are needed. They can also be used as further Thru Machines if more external gear is added in the set. T7 Flex Machine set up to listen to and play back a quantized 4 bar recording buffer taken from the master track. This is used to transition smoothly from one project or pattern to another on the DN and DT without things jerking abruptly. Also having this transition method allows the set to be fully improvisational. If I want to change projects because the mood of what I'm doing isn't perfect for the crowd, I can completely stop and load other projects in the DN and DT while the loop captured on the OT continues to play, then mix across by assigning to scenes to the cross fader. T8 Master track with master FX The AB cross fader has a number of performance scenes set up that allow for improvisation of breaks, drops, transitions, builds, etc. The idea of the setup is to do everything to allow for flexibility in performance while reading a crowd, and not get stuck to a pre planned set with pre planned transitions. The point of my live set is to perform live music improvised at a moment in time, and to avoid just muting and unmuting preplanned loops while twiddling the filter cutoff. I'm basically live producing or remixing. Not the easiest (and can be scary as hell), but I feel the performance aspect is worth it. I hope this helps. You've given me the idea to do a video more in depth about just this part of everything as a 'pert 2' to the setup video. Thanks! Thank you so much for watching.
