It is 1977, and I am out with my Kodak Super 8mm sound movie camera. This was state of the art technology at the time. Movie film with sound. Only problem, was that the film cartridge only held 3-1/2 minutes of film. It usually always ran out in the middle of a subject. These old films have been digitalized, and preserved for all to see these early days of Conrail.
In Part I, you will see locomotives that make up the newly formed Conrail of April 1976. Units from Penn Central, Reading, Erie Lackawanna, and newly painted Conrail. The locations covered will be in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, and filmed on the old Erie Mainline, the NYC River line, and out in the Allentown area of CNJ and the Reading lines.
Another neat thing to watch for in these old clips, are the classic freight cars. 40 and 50 footers, open side and open top auto racks, old tank cars, and reefers. What's really nice! No graffiti on any of it! Those where the days!!!
Hope you enjoy some of these classic images, even though the quality isn't the greatest with the antiquated system of filming back in the 70's...

I'm glad you shared this. Been wondering for years what the horns on the EL SD45's sounded like. I can just imagine these beasts on hotshot trains across Indiana and Ohio before Conrail.

Boy Jack, you're really bringin back the memories now! I remember how busy Conrail's startup made the ex-PRR thru Fort Wayne! Train after train, especially during the evening hours! And how sad it was to see former EL symbols NY-72, and BRC-75 on once rival PC trackage. Thanks for uploading this!

Only in that last scene from The Lehigh Line did I notice any rollicking locomotives, or freight cars. Conrail must have fixed a lot of the track in these clips, or perhaps, it wasn't in horrible shape to begin with.

Great video! I played with both regular-8 and super-8 film in the late 60's through the early 80's, but unfortunately took footage of trains on only 3 occasions that I can remember (I did a quickie conversion to video and uploaded them here on youtube a couple years ago). I was a cheapskate and painfully aware of the 3 & 1/2 minute limitation. As I recall it was maybe around $5 for a roll of silent film and $7 for processing. I bought a 32 GB memory card the other day for $25 that will hold almost 8 hours of HD video with sound. Anyway, I regret the missed opportunities to take train movies back then, so it's extra meaningful to me to see yours. Lookin' forward to watching more.

I live in the Hanover PA subdivision, now run by CSX. Western Maryland was the first railroad in the area in 1886 or so, then eventually came to CSX thru the various mergers

what ever happen to those trains are they still running?
@dsmith9964
@dsmith9964 10 лет назад
I dont know. I have seen 30+ year old rolling stock before. I would say most of the locomotives have either been scrapped or sold to short line railroads.
@thenekom
@thenekom 9 лет назад
D Smith A lot of them are still out there. Not so much the class I's, but there are railroads out there still running locomotives as old as the 1940s in revenue service.

I like conrail thanks for posting Can I ask does conrail ever end up in oregon
@1jackdk
@1jackdk 7 лет назад
Conrail only went as far west as Chicago area Dave. But I'm sure some CR units made it out to Oregon in run-through service. I caught Conrail w/b in Arizona on the Santa Fe. I'll have to edit that video for RU-vid. But here is the picture of that. Thanks for watching... www.flickr.com/photos/jackdk/28047319235/in/album-72157649880314264/
