I think Dunkirk tower is still standing but obviously not operational in 2023. Father worked there for many years from the late 60’s to early 80’s as well as NS and Sugar St towers in Lima. He also worked at Forest tower which was destroyed by a derailed Penn Central train 1974. Fortunately it was his night off but the operator on duty was spared. Still have the pics. The tower was naturally reduced to rubble but the green rectangular roof remained perfectly intact and came to rest on top of the debris of splintered wood, broken glass, and twisted metal. I only wish my dad was here so I could tell him to watch this video.
An awesome video. What makes it even better is the first shot in dunbridge ohio. My grandfather was the engineer of that train he videotaped inside of. I thank you for that. This is the second video I found on youtube my grandfather was either heard or videotaped.
I miss these days!!! Used to watch a lot of Conrail action at Mentor Ohio on the water level route and the Youngstown line in struthers/ lowellville ohio. Love seeing those brand new sd60i’s and c40-8w’s! Nick
i worked for CSX on the B&O Chicago Division and B&O CT. I liked the Conrail guys that came to Garrett, IN. They had great knowledge for me as a new Locomotive Engineer. Was sad that Conrail was merged with CSX and NS.
Love seeing footage from my hometown of Kenton in this! I miss watching Big Blue roll through town. CSX runs through these days, but it’s just not quite the same!
Conrail yardleyville granite RR mcarty RR Baron of Alaska full right of the hundred foot line each side of center an in crocment right hundred site of derail line of property rights of there talking one ten niney proof of rail no an stallion crazy I've done some research grease wheels an the shoe polish boy an the lottery of era or railroad an how they got duel rails of old for a race track
Love the old Penn Central and later Conrail days of the early 1970s until around 1979-80. Grew up in a house right next to the tracks in Greenfield Indiana. Penn Central's Cambridge City to Indianapolis line. Sadly they have taken up the tracks in the 1990s and made a hiking trail out of them now. Indianapolis was a major intersection for rail and highway back then. I cannot locate anything from Indianapolis going East past Greenfield, Knightstown, Dunreith (was a major derailment there in 1968). Sure do miss the old days of that Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Conrail East West run.
Wow, those new wide cab G.E. and GM units really pack a punch. Noticed that some trains needed only two locomotives to haul those heavy steel and autoparts trains..
Love the shot @ 7:30 coming out of Stanley yard e/the old prr outer yard off of andrus rd in north wood. That now sits very overgrown and not used at all. Would do anything to see this area back in use today.
Fittingly even threw in a couple of seconds of "The Time Tunnel" TV series near the end with Whit Bissel and Lee Meriwether, a childhood favorite of mine.
Everyone keeps talking about The Conrail horns. NOTHING in the world sounds like a slow dragging Conrail engine. Just something about those Conrail engines and locomotive choices. They just sound different than CSX.
That locaton at the junction where you were showing csx and conrail trains. Was that Greenwich when they were building the connector between the 2 prior to the split?
