Ice cream or Aristotle? Those who need the most should get the most. The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few and the one. What is good for the hive is good for the bee. Utilitarianism=Socialism?
you the best man, i wish it was a pdf though , am more a reader than a listener, trust me your explanation is what i needed and i have a test on Thursday 26 april, regarding this theory
I agree with most of your definitions but disagree with your examples. Stating that these concepts being deemed simplistic is a straw man is correct and incorrect. Meaning that to say these concepts are simple is a falsehood, however to point out that 90 to 99 percent of people utilize these concept far too simplistically is fact and not a straw man at all. Most people lack the knowledge and commitment to fully think through these philosophies. Therefore, they simply use an easy and abbreviated methodology in which they have zero interest in determining the quality of consequential pleasures because that is actually difficult and may not be determinable at all, so they do a simple math problem like your first example. (Over simplification of your first problem but theory holds true I think) Instead of spending 100 euros on my daughter I will give 1 euro to 100 people, or 1/10 euro to 1000 people cause that is an easy measurement and requires no higher level thought.
Thanks for the comment. Good point that people tend to simplify things. However, I do not believe or mean to suggest that it is a strawman against people simplifying the theories but against the ideas understood correctly.
@@philosophyinanutshell8843 yes that I agree with completely I don’t think there is anything simple about determining the consequences of personal or societal action on an individual basis this is very difficult and even more so at the level of community. Otherwise history would likely have no great atrocities, many horrifying things have been done while chanting “the greater good” (HOT FUZZ reference). As they say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Thank you for the video and for the clarification.
