You can't just label all Republicans as valuing personal liberty and all Democrats as being group-centric. Sure, Republicans want it to be easier to own guns, but they also don't want women to be able to make the choice to have an abortion. Democrats aren't all about "group-values", if they were they would oppose abortion and same-sex marriage to try to bolster America's birth rate. As a young person myself, I think our goal is (or at least should be) to try and harmonize personal liberty and group values, to let people do what they want without endangering others. But that's just my two cents, but if anyone actually read this then I guess thanks for listening?
