I like the detail, i think you are spot on about the reasons why stage control is so important, especially for characters like little mac, bowser, jiggly puff etc who have so little options while in the air or off stage and can take a huge amount of damage or potentially die just to get back on stage. i think there needs to be more in terms of your options at the ledge, and the drawbacks, benefits of each. for example rolling gets you safely on stage but you have fewer frames of invincibility and can be reacted to and punished as you say. normal get up gives you tons of invincibility at the cost of still leaving you at the edge of the stage jumping can leave you in lag, potentially force you to use your double jump, brings you closer to the blast zone, leaves you open to an attack below get up attack, or letting go of the ledge and performing a rising fair can catch your opponent off guard and is good as a mixup. but it can be shielded and punished

This is why its important to be comfortable offstage and even on ledge, so mentally you aren’t limiting yourself or pushing yourself into a mental corner from which you’re desperately trying to escape. That desperation is out of fear, and those fear based reactions are easily punishable as your mind is essentially clouded and unfocused
@fortuneunfaded
@fortuneunfaded 4 года назад
Learning to be comfortable/confident/calm in situations where it seems as if you should be worried, fearful, running amok are the foundations of having a strong mental game, and not having your mentality being so conditional. Conditional in the sense that your mentality isn’t based upon your conscious intention, but due to the circumstances and what’s going on around you, your position on the map, percent/stock lead or deficit etc.When you let your mentality start to diminish because you feel you’re in an unfavorable situation it commonly starts to snowball more and more unless you can reset or improve that mentality

I have recently begun trying Shiek competitively since I prefer to be a bit aggressive with Marth at times even though I know he is a patient playstyle. He also has to read an absurd amount to follow up off of most everything... which is tough. LONG STORY ASIDE!! I noticed Vanish has a very significantly large hitbox. I had a misinput near the edge in a recent match and used the strong hitbox of Vanish right on the edge and KOed my opponent as you would with Ike's Neutral B. I believe they too low from the edge for it to be a 2-frame punish. Anyway at all this deserves looking into and possibly another video. Thanks for the Shiek info my friend it very much helps even though I seem to be a slow Smash learner when info is even literally handed to me.

I get the general idea and I am able to apply that situation to most characters... but!..... how exactly do I apply pressure to characters like Cloud when they're cornered? He outranges Sheik greatly with his aerials and forces me back while I try to corner him and is often very safe with it. Should I use more defensive options and bait out the aerials to punish them, should I give him more room or do I still try to threaten him with spaced aerials? I feel like I'm missing the obvious choice
@DekuTree
@DekuTree 8 лет назад
You've got the right idea. If you generally feel threatened by a character's ability to out-perform you with aerials/normals, baiting out moves is a good choice. When cornered, a common defense mechanism is to flail out in the hopes of hitting the opponent due to being pressured. Something as simple as dashing in -> rolling out then punishing the baited move with grab/Bouncing Fish/etc is a good (if overly simple) gameplan. Don't forget that going into the air is a commitment. Jumping is giving the stage to your opponent (no matter how small of a duration it is). Cloud's main offensive pressure comes from U-air and B-air, so if you can bait those out, he'll vulnerable in the air (very bad for Cloud) and very exploitable. Think about your opponent's main offensive options and what they'll use when pressured. If you can figure this out you'll what moves you can bait out, allowing for optimal punishes.

Also, remember, when Cloud is up b'ing to the ledge, if you time your vanish correctly, there's literally nothing Cloud can do but get hit since Cloud doesn't snap to the ledge, and it hits below the stage, very good hitbox. It's also not a two frame of course because Cloud doesn't snap to ledge, so he won't get his jump back. If he's high percent, he'll die, if not, pretty easy bouncing fish, or fair to kill since he won't have any jumps, and only up b. Mr. R tweeted about how that's the most free thing ever, and it is.
@Br0ckHall

This was a really eye opening video. Do have have suggestions for how Megaman can pressure someone at the ledge? I'm thinking lemons and Z-drop metal blade mostly there are probably other less obvious options
@WhenTheNincadasCry
@WhenTheNincadasCry 8 лет назад
*but there are probably less obvious options
@DekuTree
@DekuTree 8 лет назад
(I'm not a MM main so bear with my likely inaccurate ideas) You wanna abuse your main advantage as Megaman, and that's range. You're able to pressure them from a distance, and rapidly at that. Filling space with projectiles is just like walling with aerials, but they have the advantage of being safer due to the extra distance. Your opponent is gonna have to shield or avoid these. If they jump over them they're committing to a vulnerable action which can easily be exploited. Short-hop U-airs create a wall above you, preventing them from getting over you. Because of your ranged ability, make sure to stand where their roll from the ledge will put them. You'll be able to exert similar pressure to a melee character but won't have a need to fade back to roll-catching range If they shield (most likely option), you need to be aggressive with grab pressure. Shoot three lemons. They shield them? Shoot two more while moving forward then grab. Short-hop B-airs are very effective at pressuring the opponent since they have a long duration and are your strongest aerial. If you just spam B-airs good players will pick up on the pattern and get in through a hole in your defense. Mixup your pressure. If you think they've picked up on a B-air pattern, do one or two b-airs then just fade back and shoot some lemons. They'll try to run in and punish only to be shot with lemons. Your Side-B is crazy for pressure if it lands. The opponent is forced to make an immediate decision in order to avoid damage. Option 1) They'll shield the bomb. This is super free. Run in and grab them if they shield and throw them off-stage. Option 2) They'll run in to attempt to stick you with the bomb. This is where you can throw out any attack and it's incredibly likely to hit. If they're running at you, they're likely aware of how vulnerable shielding the sticky bomb makes them, which means they're not going to shield as they run in for fear of being stuck in shield and grabbed. Option 3) If a good player is stuck with the bomb, they'll know you're looking for the grab if they shield. This means they'll spot-dodge as you come closer to them (usually timed properly to not get hit with the bomb). If you know your opponent is good, simply walk up to them and wait for the spot-dodge, then punish with whatever. There's only so much I can say with my limited understanding of MM's kit, but overall don't approach it as 'Throw out the most amount of hitboxes in the hopes of hitting the opponent'. See it as a game or dance you have to play with them, with them reacting to your actions and you to theirs. Think about what your actions will cause the opponent to do.
@WhenTheNincadasCry
@WhenTheNincadasCry 8 лет назад
+Deku Tree This was a big help. All I needed to know was how a zoning character could put on pressure at the ledge, and applying the short hop up airs to a few friendlies proved useful. Lemons also seem like a good option but one I need to practice, and unfortunately short-hop bair has punishable landing lag so it's not the best for pressuring shield. Still, for a channel dedicated to Shiek, you knew a lot more about Megaman than I expected. Thanks

can you make a new vid on sheiks fair? or explain ways to use or get better with it? since fthrow was nerfed and ive been seeing sheiks lately, usually ZeRo, Void, and Vinnie do that really low fast fair string at the start of a game and idk how to do it. ive tried ff before and after my string. im also unsure to sure to use control stick jump and a, jump control stick and a, or do the c stick. i feel like its the same thing with c stick except you have mobility to fast fall without taking your thumb off and having the string stop. i hope you get what i mean. ive tried doing everything to get my fair strings to work. ive tried looking replays, practicing against cpu and in training and even friends. and i barely getm off now due to fthrow nerf. and to make it worse im horrible at approach in this game and cant seem to even get a natural fair on ground without them noticing or having to use grab or get it off a punish or get up option. plz make a vid for sheik's fair! thanks in advanced :)

A whole video about stage control and why the ledge is a bad spot to be at and you don't talk about covering get up options at all? Having your opponent hanging at the edge is the most stage control you can get aside from offstage. Also Shiek is fucking amazing at ledge trapping.
