Imo, for anyone who is thinking of buying a ps5 for $2k. I would recommend buying/building a $1.5k pc mess around with it until prices return to earth and then buy it for msrp with the $500 that’s left.

You are so right and it is so sad that these people get away with it. Genuine people like myself who were trying to get a 3070 and then had to see all those idiots on EBay selling for silly money. People need to stop paying the scalpers, also the selling companies need to be more robust and restrict orders to one per person initially to allow more individuals to purchase. The retailers have to take some of the blame for allowing multiple purchases. It’s not difficult to limit the quantity to one per order initially. If someone is desperate to make money then the one allocation system won’t stop it but it will be much harder. The issue lies with the manufacturer hype, I just don’t get why they do not produce a large quantity, they have plenty of time to prepare but it’s same old same old, create frenzied demand.

Meanwhile, 3090's are coming around more often for MSRP... Check office depot guys... They'll spend 2k before they hook the console up and run that upscaled 4k. It was pretty funny how console's came out, and everyone freaked out as they beat 2 year old GPU's that are now considered "Mid range" cards. So much hype that most people that buy a PS5/XBSX will have no idea they'll be running @4k/30fps on CyberPunk. Exactly. Hate scalpers all you want but they're charging what the market will bear. People are paying $1000+ for a PS5 so that's what scalpers are listing them for. That price is also motivating them to continue buying every bit of stock they can find. Blame your fellow consumer. Now yes scalpers are artificially increasing scarcity by buying everything, there's probably substantially less product available than would be typical for a major electronics launch due to setbacks/delays related to the pandemic, and a lot of people are REALLY bored sitting at home all day (myself included) so people are especially rabid to buy a new fun thing. That still doesn't excuse paying double today for something you don't need when you can wait 2-3 months and pay regular price.

I still remember when I was in high school the year of the PS4 release, how different things were. I worked my summer job til I had enough, and I walked into an EB Games (GameStop but Canadian), and pre-ordered one. It was not announcement day, and I certainly didn't have to stalk online stock numbers to catch an opportunity. You just could order one if you wanted to. Apparently that's now a novel concept. This year I had tabs for every retailer on the 3080 launch, and spent hours getting nothing. I just got one (a more expensive AIB card than I wanted), weeks later, out of pure luck. I had to wait 3.5 hours for a Ryzen 5000 cpu, and I didn't get the one I wanted, I still had to backorder. It's absolutely nuts.

Getting 3 or 4 pre-orders is completely possible by a normal human. Now, it may be different with the Series X, but I was successful for four of them. Ended up keeping only two of my pre-orders (Microsoft and Best Buy in store) as my other buddies ended up being successful and then sold my extra for retail to another buddy I hadn't seen in 17 years, lol. I'm reading alot of comments suggesting that Sony does not or should not care about this boting/scalping issue because in theory the console is being bought either way. The truth is this practice of using bots to by up launch inventory and then selling the console at inflated prices on the secondary market does hurts Sony pocket. If most consoles are being bought up by a reselling secondary market, this in turns means those console purchase will not have near future accessory, games, subscriptions etc sales. Chances are those consoles will be sitting for a very long time in someone's home and not generating any other revenue streams I listed above. This problem certainly should be addressed by Sony to ensure the hardware is getting into the hands of people that will also be promptly buying the other proxy products that come along with console purchases

There is a fundamental problem with all the individuals on Ebay advertising the new Playstation 5 and Xbox S/X consoles as "new" or "brand new," when in fact they are no longer new since those who bought these systems (or any other retail item for that matter) and took them home are now selling used goods. Those people selling said consoles on Ebay, or any other site, are now the owners of those consoles, thus making anything you purchase from them a second-hand purchase. In other words, they are all selling USED , second-hand consoles. The extent to which these consoles were enjoyed does not matter. Granted, there is high demand for these systems this season and some are willing to pay, it still doesn't warrant the exorbitant prices these re-sellers are asking. They are not manufacturers, distributors, or retailers by definition therefore cannot ethically, morally, or possibly even legally (depending on state/province) label these consoles sitting in their living rooms, basements, garages, etc. as "new." Lack of time of used does not matter. Said sellers took delivery of the consoles, thus making them the primary owners. If you buy a Playstation 5 or Xbox X/S from one of the re-sellers featured in this video, or the many others like it, know you are buying a used console. Just a friendly PSA.

if this wasn't during a pandemic, I would have done in-store pick-up preorder if I was CEO of a company. You either do a walk-in or on-line preorder and then come to the store to pickup ONE per person for the first few shipments of sales. I'm not a business person but I hope this would limit scalpers. I would love to hear stories about how scalpers give their preorder tickets to other people but then found out most of those people took those systems for themselves.

To be clear, true bots only work on web stores where they have less than the bare minimum of protection. A lot of web stores require captcha, and only have single item purchasing. for many web stores with the graphics cards, bots are still useable, but the most they can do is to automatically add the item to your cart. a real user still has to go in and pay and check out manually. I don't know about walmart for consoles, but amazon is the only graphics card retailer I have heard of that still has api ordering, where a script can literally push a request, and can buy the full stock of an item. the rest of them are one item at a time and are protected by captcha or something like that. i don't think many of the people pulling this stuff out there have a bot sophisticated enough to run multiple fake accounts at the same time to purchase a tone of cards one at at time. it really is just normal users getting one at a time, but the only people who even get one are users with scripts because stock is so low

Just buy with a credit card, get the item, open an eBay case, item not received, or some other multiple-choice option, and request a full refund. FYI, you can do this with every radius option one after the other even if your case is denied until your case is filed in your favor and you get a full return. There is no limit to requesting a refund on ebay. So keep at it. Get the item for free and let the scalper feel this hit.

In 2005 I wanted an Xbox 360. They were almost sold out by the next evening in my area (Tri State). I went to Sears and promptly bought the last one they had. I was beyond lucky. My Ex knew I wanted one. Imagine my surprise when I find the entire kiosk in the back of my Exes' car! She talked the salesmen in the electronics department in Toys R Us to sell her the entire Kiosk! So now I had 2 Xbox 360s. I put an add in Craigslist and in about 10 minutes got flooded with calls each offering more than the last if I held it for them. Some for hours, some for days. The last call I took got it. He offered $1000 and lived about 5 minutes from me. Even kept me on the phone while he drove over "just in case". Sometimes it's not scalpers. People wanting these items are driving less scrupulous people to act on them, sadly, and this is a fact of life. Draconian as it is. I myself got whipped into a frenzy in 2005 as I answered call after call and each call wanted to give me more than the last. It was outrageous. Oh and get this...the kiosk had a PC power supply running it all so he bought it WITHOUT the power brick. Those were in stock strangely enough.

We should teach scalpers a lesson. The strategy is very simple. 1. Set a price that you want to pay for the product in question (ps5) for example $500 or $400. Me I bought ps4 for $300 last year, so for me does not make sense to pay more than $300 for a ps4 replacement. 2. Then, be emotionally intelligent and stick to your rule. Don't give up. Stick to your price. 3. Also buy from the original source as much as possible. Don't buy from ebay or no-name sellers on Amazon. Buy it from Sony. If the seller is not Sony, the price should reflect it as a discount because the increased risk of getting a fake product. If the seller does not give you a discount for not being Sony, don't buy it !!! Also companies should prepare for scalpers and produce more products. Hold to your rules. Eventually the scalpers will give up. If everybody is emotionally intelligent and the scalpers bought more units than the market demands (and by market I mean that segment of market who don't buy directly from Sony using the bit name companies like Amazon, Target or Walmart, etc ...) , they will give up. And when they do there will be a blood-bath, you will find ps5 for $100. I mean why would you pay more when you buy from a shady seller ? It is this combination of having ps5 for Christmas that the scalpers take advantage of. If the scalpers decided to ruin your Christmas and not let you have ps5 for $500 on Christmas, they should pay a price. Make them pay !!!

Bot prevention against publicly available bot software is incredibly easy, it’s a joke.

I'm not a huge fan of Walmart, but I don't think most of the bot users purchased their cards their. Walmarts "online only" sales were actually a pretty good idea, they still sold out in seconds, but you had to purchase your console through the website from a physical local store and then go pick it up. I actually got an Xbox series X from them by being ready the moment they went on sale, having my zipcode and local store already selected. Then when I came to pick up my console, they required me to present a photo ID to pick it up. I WISH the graphics card retailers handled things at least that good.. :(

Manufacturers need to really stock up before they launch products from now on. Or delay the launch until they have sufficient stock. It would be absolutely awesome if they did, and when the scalpers come in and bought thousands of them, there'd still be plenty left afterwards. It'd be win-win for the manufacturers and the customers. I'd love to see scalpers stuck with hundreds of PS5s or GPUs, and having to sell them for MSRP, or less, to get their money back.

Honestly as much as I hate the scalpers, the market is the problem. Scalpers can buy a pallet of consoles for $25k and sell them IMMEDIATELY for double after fees and shipping. As long as companies manage to build hype for a product launch without building adequate supply, and retailers put in absolutely no effort to curb bots, and consumers have no self-control, this will be our reality. Manufacturers, retailers, and scalpers all get paid by screwing over the people giving them money, and we let it happen. Hell we MAKE it happen.

Well console gamers pay 150 to 250 for COD every year for it to end up on a gamestop shelf within 2 months so I'm not surprised they will pay 2000 for a PS5. The only good thing is that these folks that have all these consoles and PC tech will be trying to give them away once stock is plentiful so check ebay in 6 months or so for great deals below MSRP.

imho buying a product for the sole purpose of immediately reselling it above MSRP is as obvious as a scam gets and it should be illegal. I hope ebay users are reporting them to the police because I highly doubt any one of those scalpers buying dozens to hundreds of consoles is a licensed trader who can just open a console/gpu shop. Even if scalping isn't illegal tax evasion definitely is.
