At the end of day one of my Waco cross country trip back to Fantasy of Flight, I stopped for the night at GossHawk Unlimited, a great vintage aircraft restoration and maintenance facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. Boy, do they do outstanding work, and produce some fine examples of vintage aircraft done right . . . including a wonderful Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer restoration, that I had the pleasure of getting to do a "Kermie Cam" tour of, with Lindsey Goss. Come on along with us.
Hope you enjoy it.

Dad was a radio navigator in one of these in '44. They flew 18 hour lone patrols in the South China Sea from Clark Base in Manilla. He said the enemy wasn't the biggest threat. It was getting lost or having mechanical trouble 1000 miles from home. PB4Y's are made for bombing not ditching in the Pacific Ocean. Those planes would sink like a stone and many crews vanished. Looking through the main canopy I can almost imagine endless blue water blending with the horizon with those four engines droning in the background. It must have seemed awfully lonely out there in 1944.

Boy would that be superb to see her restored with all the turrets. Privateer crews were absolute badasses! Anyone interested in learning more about them should read the book Above an Angry Sea. Those crews are truly unsung heroes of the war.

Using wife's account. I was a co-pilot on tanker 62 back in 90's Dc7 ran into t-121 and other 4y's all over the west and Alaska . They wer were quite a hot rod. I remember being passed by a H&P 4y flying out of Durango. This time it was DC6B with water injection. Passed us like we were sitting on Jack's.flew tankers for about 10 years had to quit to wife's health. Tim Mc Coy

Hello Mr. Weeks,,, On your way home through Texas,,it'l be worth your time to stop in at Stevens County Airport, KBKD, and visit Ezell Avaition. Those folks have so far restored 34 WW2 Warbirds. Including P38, F6F, P51, Corsairs, and more. I don't know how many they are working on now, but they enjoy having pilots come by for a tour, and hanger flying. You won't be disappointed.

There's really not much of a Privateer left once you change the nose, canopy and engines etc. Still, it could be "put right" as you have the basic bird to work with. It is actually quite amazing that one actually still flies occasionally. It is also quite amazing how a single tail and a fuselage stretch turned the rather pudgy-looking Liberator into the elegant Privateer. The Liberator and it's derivative, the Privateer are two of my favourites.

Radials are such a double edged sword. Not horrible to work on, they sound awesome when you start them up and running. But...but all that being said. The other edge is when you clean the plane, lets say a DC-3. Takes you 3 hours or so by yourself and then they do a run up. Watching the oil splash over areas you just cleaned makes you want to cry. Oh its also summer in Arizona and you didn't get around to cleaning till around 1030.

I didn't even know a PB4Y existed until I saw one on final approach to KBLI in 2002 or 3. It looked like the offspring of an illicit affair between a B-17 and a B-24, at least that was my first impression, It was in a fire bomber configuration. I don't know if it was the one I saw or a sister that had a catastrophic wing failure a few months later and that company pulled them from service. It was within a few weeks of a Hercules fire bomber folding up on camera.

With what amounts to a stripped down B-24 with a more aerodynamic nose and upgraded engines I would think the old fire bomber would be pretty fast for a four engined aircraft. Now we just need Kermit to crawl through a LB-30 and that would pretty much cover the B-24 family

@dave8218 4 года назад
@@KermitWeeks444 that plane is considerably bigger than a 124. Being able to crawl along the leading edge is much shorter on the 124. You would start out on hands and knees to get to inboard engines, then the landing gear was under you as you sat on cat walk. The trip to outboard was on your belly but behind engine was larger compartment. The apu's were in the outer engine nacelles. With the engine running and you opened fire wall hatch you better have ear plugs cause that 4360 was screaming.

Between the the Coast Guard and the firefighters, they really stripped the Liberator down to the bare bones. It's kind of cool because it sort of reveals what a basic design the B-24 was, which was probably the point to get them into production ASAP. By the way, what's Kate from Lost doing in Arizona? ;-)
