No disrespected intended at all but, the "music" of those Pratt R-1830's is sufficient. Nothing else needed.

Yeah, the crummy music made give up watching at 4:47, despite my interest, as my father in law flew Catalinas in WWII for the RAAF (he died only a few years ago aged 96).

Hard agree. I used to live in a house that was in the flight path of a working DC-6 that makes regular flights out from Fairbanks, AK to the villages. It still goes, and sometimes it overflies my work. Great sound, those P&W engines.

Mr. Yves Cartilier, Consolidated PBY Catalina 9767,this sensational and unforgettable Aircraft,widely used in wars and also in peace flying today and providing excellent service today in many countries. Here in Brazil, in The Amazon was very uself for many years,taking all kinds of help for those isolated populations, mainly the indigenous population. Today unfortunately calls "paw shocks " were retired and many are preserved in museums Aeronautical. These fantastic aircraft served as long range patrol with the Fleet Air Arm during the war,and performed sterling service. Two pilots,a flight engineer's position above and behind,and two gunners manning the side blisters. A very respected and feared aircraft at the time.

Thank you for great and beautiful Video. I was so impressed that I made play list " PBY Catalina" 4 levers in the cockpit - Red two long levers and Yellow short two levers. Red and Yellow were not the same position at the starting engine. Yellow were front and Red were back. when you were taking off, you moved only Red long two levers from back to forward carefully and slowly. after taking off, Yellow short two ones little back. then All four levers almost the same position. Why you used only two Red levers for take off ? What the difference of Red and Yellow levers ?

I remember many years ago in the early 60s seeing one of these beauties fly by just off the waters edge while on vacation in Destin with my family. Later that morning two of the old straight wing type jet fighters with the wing tanks out on the end of each wing make the same pass by. Shooting Star I think is what they were called. Dad and I also saw the classic swept wing answer to the early Mig 15s, 2 of our F-86 Saber jets in a pair come by on the deck so to speak. Pensacola Air Base was just a hop and skip away for them so we guessed that is where they had come from. Great memories. Growing up here in the Mississippi Delta I also remember the old Stearman Bi-planes being used to spray crops with upgraded engines to the Super Wasp radial engines. Loud as could be but so much fun to watch as a child. Here in my hometown of Clarksdale they had a training base for Pilots during WW-2 which is still there and some of the original hangers and used by people with personal planes. Fletcher Field was and is the name of the old base and present day airport. Morgan Freemon flies in and out of there often as his home is nearby in the town or near the town of Charleston MS. The Catalina must have saved many lives back in their war days and it will stick with me always seeing these great pieces of history back when they were still being used. Would or could have been as early as 63 as we started going down there yearly about the time I turned six years old. It always seemed to be very early in the mornings when they would do these on the deck fly by passes. I guess they enjoyed waking everyone up, but after the first time I knew to get up and get out there and wait because something was going to come by. I can't recall having seen a Panther but I'd bet I did as it happened every morning one type or several types. Thanks Dad. Dad was part of the Mighty Eight flying out of Burtonwood England I think was the name of the base. He said he never saw a 262 and was not the least bit upset about that loss of a chance. It is a shame back then nobody seemed to care about destroying them by the droves. I feel the same way about buildings too that were torn down for some odd looking strip mall type shit to take its place. Sad. Other parts of the world are not so eager to do this sort of stuff it appeared to me years ago as a young man outside of the CONUS. We should have done better in preserving our history. There is a great deal to be said for progress, but equally as much about saving the past. A beautiful aircraft there and thanks for the sharing. Brings a tear or two thinking about Dad sitting there with me trying to keep the sand out of his coffee as we sat, waited, and watched. Saw a B-25 Mitchell fly over town a few years ago as it came down to the airshow at Fletcher Field and was giving pay for rides to folks with the cash to spend. Another beautiful bird to see in the sky overhead. We should have done a better job is all I can say about that topic.

Everybody loves the ole PBY and my Dad worked on them in WWII, preparing them to be flown out of Eastern N.C. (Elizabeth City) to Archangel with Russian pilots. Said they had a hell of a hard time keeping the Ruskies from overloading the AC with fresh fruit and veggies and once had a pitch-pole sinking in the Pasquataque River with overload and extremely forward C.G.!

I like planes restored to be as they were in service, but the PBY does look really nice with no turret on the nose. (Especially they way everything comes together in the frontal view.) And yes to what others have said. Give us a version with no music please!

WW2 - My Dad flew in the PBY, he was a Radioman & Gunner. He flew in the “Blister” doing Costal Patrols for ships and submarines. He was first in a Dauntless Dive Bomber, but during a training exercise while making a practice bomb run, the plane lost power and they had to make an emergency landing. When the plane came onto the emergency field upon landing on the runway, it split into two sections. Both he and the pilot were injured. While recovering in the hospital, some Officers came around to see him and asked if he’d fly again. He said: if you can put me in something that has more than one engine. That’s how he supposedly ended up in PBYs.

Good video! What is such a plane good for? How is the specific design of he wings (placement above the body and position of the engines) better than other wing/plane designs?
@ryanchristopherson374
@ryanchristopherson374 5 лет назад
This aircraft was built and designed as a pure flying boat prior to WWII. ie, it had no permanent wheels until later models such as the one featured. With that in mind, the layout of the PBY Catalina is very much in harmony with previous, and following amphibious aircraft design. The engines are up high and close together to maximize a central line of thrust. That way if you lose one engine (which happened now and then) the other was close enough to the centerline to continue flying without undue stress on the airframe. Putting the wing up high itself kept it out of the splash of water, and also prevented the propellers from taking on water splashes, which could result in thermal damage to the engines, which are air-cooled. Think of cold water on hot glass...not a good outcome. With all that said, the Catalina was one of the most reliable and respected support aircraft of the war. They could loiter over an area for several hours patrolling for enemy submarines, or follow a fleet after the battle to recover downed airmen from the sea, or stay up high above the fray and perform recon missions to spot the enemy fleet. It was, and remains, a very flexible and durable design.

The PBY was a very succesful airplane, and perfectly adapted to the tasks requested at that time. But the design had some weaknesses. Those weaknesses where taken into account when other manufacturers (Gruman, De Havilland, Beriev, …) decided to produced other more modern large seaplanes.

About a dozen retired WWII airframes had a brief second life as "flying yachts" in the 50's, one of them is still on a beach in Saudi Arabia. I bet there'd be a big enough recreational market for these if done right, given the huge sums wealthy couples spend on sailing yachts of equivalent size.
