I love how this movie keeps with the tradition of what made the old comics great, which is that John never gets a happy ending, but it does avoid his usual experience of all his friends dying. Good stuff.
It might be a nitpick but I don’t like how he does cross eyed while doing incantations. Might be heresy but I prefer Keanu reeves. I really hope Matt Ryan can be in Constantine 2 as Constantine from another world and they team up and Matt Ryan is mocking him for his American accent, his dark hair and his quitting smoking.
Matt is my Constantine too. As you said both live action and animated. He's got the look and he's got the voice. I watched his TV series back when it was first released and was gutted when it got cancelled then so happy when Stephen Amell wanted Matt's Constantine on Arrow and we got a ton more Constantine in Legends too (ok some of it was goofy but Matt made it work for me) and Matt got to voice the character in these animated movies too. Sorry to the Keanu fans but I never cared for his version in that film. I've no interest in a new one of those. I'd love a full on gorey live action Matt - Constantine film! :)
@@carn9507 sorry to break it to you bud but the sequel to Keanu’s Constantine is confirmed. Even with James Gunn taking over Dc, Dc have said it changes nothing to Constantine 2
This is the Constantine I hope to see in Mr. Gunn's DCU. I'd love Mr. Matt Ryan to come back, but most importantly, the tone of the character. Even when Constantine wins, he loses. He is not hopeful like Superman or even Batman. Let him be dark and work his magic.
If u guys read the comment then make sure u remember this; Matt Ryans cancelled Constantine series was one of the best adaptations we ever had, and it shouldnt have been cancelled, you need to watch it to fully understand his character arc including what they did with legends, the series was far better and was like this animated film in a lot of ways
It did all come out in the shorts originally. If I remember correctly they came out as a three episode mini-series type thing for their streaming app and then later they combined them for physical/digital release.
I believe this was originally meant to take place in the Arrowverse and follow the Constantine show, but they decided to just say it’s part of the DCAMU instead. It was a miniseries on the CW Seed, and later combined into a movie.
Matty Ryan is constantine's Kevin Conroy. First half of this movie were a CW seed webseries btw. You should really watch the constantine series. Even tho it got canceled with a cliffhanger it's still worth a watch.
The Constantine live action series with Matt Ryan was on CBS I think. It got canceled then the actor Matt Ryan reprised his role during the arrowverse crossovers and then got pulled in as a series regular in legends of tomorrow and then got tap to do the voice acting work. He has been Constantine for years.
NBC... Not CBS. The show was originated from NBC. NBC was notorious to cancelled good shows. A year after that, the character was kept and transfered to CW. Starting in the Arrow episode "Haunted", when Oliver and John's past was shown and rescuing Sara's soul to be returned to her soulless body.
Matt Ryan is the perfect Constantine he looks exactly like the character can act just like you would expect the character to act and the voice is iconic for Constantine like Mark Hamil is the perfect voice for the joker. Also LA isn’t the only city that has its own spirit in comics there was a guy called Mr City who’s power was to talk to the spirits of the land/city. Metropolis is like a glowing Statue of Liberty goddess looking one and of course Gothams was a dark twisted goblin like demon or gargoyle.
Yes, Matt is my Constantine like you say Mark is my Joker (and Kevin is my Batman). Love that Matt got to play the character in both live action and animation. He excels in both. :)
Hey guys when you get to the end of the DCAMU, rank all the movies! Would be interesting to see your overall opinions and ratings. Also the Tommarrowverse occurs after the DCAMU and there is a short film focused off of Constantine called House of Mystery that ties them together, no more info though yall gotta watch the films!
I think this is one of the films that exemplifies the "animation is a medium, not a genre" concept perfectly. While I'll always love the Keanu Reeves movie, the animation affords this film another way to tell this story that achieves a different yet similar result. (now that I've typed it out, y'all are talking about it in the video - great minds think alike! at the exact same time lol)
In the future the animation evolved for Constantine powers. They REALLY copied what Doctor Strange was doing in live action. Now I can't unsee them copying the manifestation of his powers (in the later animated films).
This one was also a first time watch for me. Really loved Constantine in Justice league dark. Glad there are films dedicated to him mostly. Great reaction guys as always.
His accent isn't Welsh in this or in any of his roles as Constantine haha. He's from Wales but he's putting on a Liverpool Scouse accent as that's where Constantine is from.
It's a typical movie "english" accent probably because scouse can be a little hard for americans to understand ( speak from experience as a scouser with lots of American friends lol) but you can hear the scouse and Welsh inflections here and there and Welsh heavily influenced scouse anyway.
@@savagehowler he sounds like he's from the outskirts of Liverpool to me. Chester or something. He sounds like Paul Hollywood with a slightly less Scouse accent.
@@APieceOfLiquid He's from Swansea and he has said that it's very close to Liverpool. He decided to do as xlose to the accent as he could while still making iy so us Americans could understand him.
I watched this years ago when I did a marathon of these movies and yeah this was one of the more unique ones. One thing I love about DC is that they know when to mature whatever needs to be and this movie definitely is one. Also I know it’s not a part of the DCAM timeline but you guys should watch Justice League Doom and Crisis on two earths.
@@blitz1904 Ok I’m not gonna lie I was confused and thought you meant they were part of the DCAM they are watching but then I realized you meant those movies are both connected to themselves.😂
What's odd is people say this movie comes after Justice League Dark, even though Constantine and Zatana got back together at the end of that movie and are still together by Apokalipse War, so why would John have been okay with cheating on her with Los Angeles and why was he in that apartment instead of the House of Mystery? Easy, this is before he gained ownership of the House of Mystery so before Justice League Dark. Not hard to figure out

I love Justice league: Gods and monsters. It's an "otherworld" type of movie, meaning it's alternate versions of already known heroes, and it's a story that stands on its own. I don't think you have watched it yet, and it's great.
I particularly liked when they had Matt Ryan as Constantine on the show Legend's Of Tomorrow during the Crisis On Infinite Earth's crossover event in the Arrowverse, and he meets up with Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar for help.
Matt Ryan is THE only live Constantine that matters (IMO). His look and acting embody the character so well. His portrayal of the character is what made me curious about the Hellblazer graphic novels. I've been a pretty big graphic novel fan since the 90's though I hadn't followed titles as ardently as I once did in later years. I saw his live portrayal then the animated adaptations and started picking up trade paperbacks of Hellblazer from there. I'm up to volume 13 I think. Anyway, Constantine has become one of like four of my favorite characters of all time. It would be cool if they'd do a serious live action movie as close to the graphic novels as possible and give Matt Ryan the part. I like the CW stuff they had him in but acknowledge that the rating limit hampers its potential. Regardless, he is THE live Constantine...... Keanu who? (lol).
I was in a Walmart in the dvd section year's ago. An employee spent five minutes explaining too his boss why rated R cartoons cant can't be in the same section as blue's clues and Dora the explorer. I hope some kid didn't watch this.
This is why we need a new live-action Constantine movie: it's a completely different superhero movie than what people are used to. It avoids using any formulas, mixing comics with horror, creating a unique and intense experience. Something we'll likely never see in the MCU.
The girl who got stuck from hell her name is astra, and theres a SERIES of JOHN CONSTANTINE. And also the one u see from john's hand and that summoning pentagram its based from the BOOK of the "LESSER KING OF SOLOMON".
Constantine is incredibly underrated. He’s easily in my top 3 fictional characters ever. Matt Ryan is absolutely phenomenal as Constantine. His 1 season show was cut way too short and he is the best part of his stint on Legends of Tomorrow. Matt loves this character and is the definitive Constantine for many people. He’s the Kevin Conroy for Constantine. I know that this character is perfect for James Gunn and what’s most important for Constantine is tone. It’s hard to pinpoint what the definitive tone for Constantine is but if I had to try i’d say a mix of noir horror with a touch of fantasy/mystery. I appreciated Keanu’s version of the character and am exited for the sequel as long as it’s not the only Constantine we’ll get in live action. With James Gunn doing Swamp Thing in his slate there HAS to be a Constantine project in there somewhere. If they’re not casting Matt Ryan I think Charlie Hunnam would be a great pick too as I think he can pull of the mix of snarky humor, which just hides very deep seated self loathing/ trauma and pain.
I think after the movies y'all should react to Young Justice League. It's an amazing show and I think Coy, you would love some of the lesser known characters that are introduced.
THANKS for this!!! I just finished watching this whole RR mini-series of reactions!!! WOW!!! I won't list my list 'cause I've done that on almost every video on this list! Continue the willy-nilly! Coy, thanks for keeping explaining the greatness of J.M. DeMatteis! I've been reading him since the early '80s Ghost Rider and Defenders!!!
It’s irritating because Johns accent is Scouse (a Liverpudlian accent from the North West of England), the actor Matt Ryan is Welsh (Swansea to be precise which is southern Wales, West of England) however he doesn’t actually use his normal Welsch accent. He seems to use a mix of British accents which I assume is done for 2 reason, 1 I think with no offence intended, that Americans would struggle to understand a real Scouse accent & 2 given that John left Liverpool & moved to London as a young adult his natural Scouse accent would become more mellowed and would become a bit mixed up (which tends to happen after years away from home…speaking from experience). I just wish Matt could’ve added a bit of real Scouse in there for authenticity. And Night Nurse came long before Nightmare Nurse
Yes, magic usage comes at a cost. Per the "Fullmetal Alchemist", its the law of equivalent exchange. That means that have to give up something to get what you want that is of equal value.
City of demons happens before justice league war. It’s heavily debated amongst fans, but considering this movie shows his origins, and at the end of JLD he ends up with Zatanna that’s confirmed later, it wouldn’t make sense for him to do the devils tango with the city of LA, so many speculate and agree that chronology this happens the earliest in the timeline.
WE WANT KEANU AND MATT IN A MULTIVERSE TEAMUP with battle to the death each trying to save the other from the immortal doom of being last tortured survivor at the end of Time.
While there a lot of solid live action DC movies, their animated movies are always on point. Edit: Even though I forgot this one is a bit more messed up than the others, with JL: Dark in second
Magic only seems to be miserable for Constantine really. I'm not a Marvel or DC expert but; Trigon issues aside, Raven seems to handle her powers just fine and I've never heard of Zatanna or her dad struggling to cast spells. Not to mention Shazam and Dr Fate. Oh and Etrigan as well. Makes sense since out of all of them Raven's the only one casting anything close to demon magic though but that's only because of her being half Evil by mass thanks to her dad being Trigon of all people.
