How to Tie the Constrictor Knot Using the Working End and the Folded Method. This knot is more a tool than merely a knot, the constrictor knot has perhaps more uses than any other single knot and should rank highly on your list of knots to know or learn. Amongst its uses are; the temporary whipping of the end of a rope, or at the join of a splice; a grip around a bundle of lines; a clamp to hold an object whilst this is being glued and for general use as a third hand to hold something.

I will be using your folded end method to close large sacks filled with grain..... On the working end method i put a bite under the last two then pull tight... and a simple pull on that and it easily comes undone. Great demo.....thanks

Very nice production: bright yellow rope on a darker background with a darker copper pipe. 👍🏼👍🏼 Good use of contrast to bring attention to the rope. 😁 I like the constrictor knot, but I didn’t know the second method. Quite clever. Thank you.

I've learnt two important knots today, both from this channel: Constrictor and Bowline. I've seen various videos on these and other knots at different channels over the past months. But for some reason, I couldn't quite tie these despite repeated viewing. And I became discouraged, feeling "there must be something wrong with me." However, I now know how to tie these knots, with consistent results! :-) It boils down to the angle and pauses here - these are critical to my understanding. THANK YOU for helping me with something that will definitely be needed in my life sooner or later.

I always explain this fantastic knot by first make the cloves hitch and then make the last modification. It’s important, for me anyway, to see the anatomy of the knots and I see this as a modification of a cloves hitch.
@patcronin1961
@patcronin1961 4 года назад
That was my thought watching the video. It’s simply a modified clove hitch.
@riveravon5296
@riveravon5296 4 года назад
@@patcronin1961 Look up a boa knot, and realize it can be used to make a tension on a pole in the axial direction when used without the twist. A boa is also a modification of the clove.

We use this knot in construction all the time. It’s very handy for setting a string line. Side note: If you want to put tension on a cord between two objects this is a great knot. To do this, tie the knot but before setting it, pull with both hands ( one on either side of the knot) towards the working end of the cord. Once you have pulled our your slack simply pull hard on the working end and set the knot.

Great knot. I use it all the time underneath a whipping just to manage the end. i don't think it helps any more than the whipping, but it sure doesn't hurt to have it there. Another way of doing it that is a little easier, imo, is to wrap the working end over the standing end outside of the main part of the knot just like you were tying a basic overhand knot. Then take the working end up and under the crossing bar just like you were tying a clove hitch. The end result is the same, but working outside the main knot can be a little easier, especially if you're cold, wet, etc. Hope that made sense.

I've been watching a lot of videos and constructing and de-constructing the Constrictor Knot probably over 50 times now. An interesting thing about the constrictor knot is that it can easily be formed from the Clove Hitch; or the other, simpler X knot. Using the looping method or folding method that you've shown; if you go the other way; as in to the opposite side with the figure eight; you wind up with the Clove Hitch. Try it and see.

Thanks for nice and very pedagogical videos! The result of a folded method you showed is actually a bag knot. If you make a bag knot and then compare it with a "folded method knot" knot you see that they are similar. You can also make a constrictor knot and then compare it with "folded method constrictor knot" and you discover that they are not similar.

The constrictor knot seems a bit more difficult to loosen and some others warn against using it if extreme tension is at play. Could one then make a bite of the working end and use that, it knots, is easy to release, but is it as safe and strong ? Really enjoy your videos, thanks for the effort. Yes, you can slip this knot if you want to. Purists often frown upon slipped knots, as they can be accidentally tripped. However, in my experience if a knot is well dressed and tight, it take a fair bit of effort to accidentally trip it?? Can I use the constrictor knot to tie the flashlight into the bar at ninety degrees like another knot seen on one of your videos? Also how strong is the Lee Marlin ____ loop vs figure eight loop for strength. Am trying to distll my knowledge to just a few knots? Thanks
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 5 лет назад
I would say the Lee Marlin Spike is good, however, as a relatively new knot, it is still going through its testing phase. Maybe stick with the figure of eight for now. As for the constrictor knot, well why not test if for yourself compared to the Transom? ;-)

Thanks for your quick reply. Guess you are not a big advocate of passive learning by forcing me to answer my own questions. 😉. Am really enjoying your videos. I just want to know a couple of good knots and or then put them into muscle memory. Your videos are great because eg. transom knot, they give me different ideas as to apply these knots and also a critique of the application, eg Marlin Spike rope latter.

It would appear to me that if one were to tie an additional knot on top of the constrictor knot, as you show at about the 2:30 point in the video, the effect would actually be to diminish the holding or tightness, rather than increase. The forces produced would be tending to pull the knot up and away from the round object around which the knot is tied. If I wanted to provide additional securing force I'd wrap the two ends around and tie the knot on the opposite side, thereby pulling the knot tighter to the fixed object.

is it better than a clove hitch?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 4 года назад
The constrictor knot remains tight when there is no tension on the rope. I personally use this for holding my decorative knot work together, it can be quite a difficult knot to undo. The clove hitch holds fast, as long as there is tension on the rope. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

It's worth noting, if it's not obvious, the constrictor knot works best tied around convex or round objects; less so around flat or concave surfaces. ...Also, in case it's not obvious to someone, this knot can be dangerous - DO NOT tie it around body parts of people or animals. When tightened around something round and compressible like a finger or arm it can be near impossible to loosen.

Works on round things only: fishing rods, sticks, poles and the like. Will,not tighten around square objects so, for instance cannot be used to tighten a picture frame when glued. Use truckers hitch for that.

So maybe, instead of spending the whole video talking about the knot with the line just laying there, explain and demo first, then do the rest of the blah blah while you tie the know over and over and over again. I feel like the target age for this video was about 3 1/2 years old.

I started a long time ago to "over explain" as I have one subscriber who is blind. He and his granddaughter follow the videos, he listens and she watches. He ties the knot and if he goes wrong his granddaughter corrects him. A lovely little bond must be growing between them? For more Less Chat Knots: ru-vid.com/group/PL7nysDkNnZHc0Tba3EGCagrhA44Mu-MjO
