Methanol is a vastly more benign fuel with regard to emissions, especially if harnessed with fuel cells. I am convinced this is the future for alternative maritime fuels. Work is steadily progressing too towards the manufacture of methanol from renewable sources (electricity from solar, etc.), using water and carbon taken from the atmosphere. A yacht buyer who had also invested in those research efforts sufficient for a pilot plant to produce an equivalent amount of methanol as their yacht consumes could legitimately claim that their yacht is net zero for carbon emissions.
