Great content again Heinrich. I think the “Rule of Three” is particularly useful when briefing up. It is both deep enough to (hopefully) show that you have credibility, and brief enough that the senior officer attention span will (hopefully) not be easily broken. Obviously no one format of the rule is a “cookie cutter fit” for all scenarios, but I currently tend to favour the approach in the military of: 1. Situation - What it is 2. Recommendation - What we should do 3. Execution - How we could do it Great work!

Hi, great interpretation of the rule of 3 with your structure - thanks for sharing :) Best, Heinrich

Excellent communication hack, Heinrich. So simple, but addresses human need for structure and simplicity, especially for top-down thinkers which I find most of the executives I deal with are. Thanks for all the great coaching!

Can say that the rule of 3 came instinctively to my mind while improvising because of all the points already said in the video. Added to it I also thought that it was least time consuming, as the attention of a normal human being has become lesser than before. Love your videos, it has helped me improve my skill sets by a lot. Thank you so much!!

I love this rule of 3. i use something similar in my formal writing. The conclusion, 3 points, repeat the conclusion. if I move away from that style (especially for executive summaries) then my communication rambles. Good tipt on how to manage my oral communication so I don't ramble. Thank You!

It's true that in McKinsey the magic number always is three. You always plan out three scenarios, suggest three options, etc. 🙂

It certainly is an easy way to communicate your thinking but one cannot apply this as a blanket to every situation! Thanks for watching the video!

I think this rule of 3 is a very structured way in communicating our findings, backed by the supporting strong pointers to support our hypothesis. And to get to either ‘next step’ or ‘risk assessment’ is great way to enable the third pointer. I will try this and share my experience soon.

Interestingly, I once studied Zen Buddhism and my teacher spoke about how structuring with 3 points contains a completeness. An example is a haiku. Firstly starting with a verse, secondly broadening that verse. Thirdly a contrary verse, something more random, however connected.

Thank you Heinrich for sharing this valuable content! I often get stuck on the 3rd point and your advice on replacing it with next steps/risks is a great way to overcome this :) Question: You started by saying 'My hypothesis is....'. In my experience, this can be perceived as theoretical (instead of practical) by some clients. Would you have any recommendation how to overcome this? Thanks

I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! Of course there isn't a one size fits all approach for all clients and each client relationship must be treated uniquely!

Reinforces what I think of consultants: they are about trying to present themselves well, and worrying more about how they come across, rather than concerning themselves about whether they are offering any real valuable advice.

Hello, thank you for the video; your content is really informative. I do, however, want to ask you a question that is not related to this video. I'm applying to study business management in consulting at Warwick business school. I wondered if you could name a theory you learned in graduate school that consultants use in their daily jobs.

0:10 daily communication skills. for internal, client, job interview. very frequently in consulting but not in other industry. 1:15 consulting onbroading trainings: top-down communication. 3:50 this answer is a bit random. 4:25 need to be more structured and which is the most relevant factor it be. 5:10 rule of 3. more structured and easy to follow. 6:00 whenever a client or partner asks you the question, you'll be able to give answer with the rule. 6:30 most case, improvisation is key. it's alright if the third reason is not the most relevant. 7:10 how to come up with 3 points always? 2 tips. first, what's the next steps second, always talk about the risks, doubts, and dependences. -- -- -- different roles in consulting are using the rule of 3 all the time!!

Hello Heinrich, just a small question on which I would like to have your opinion: according to you in the professional life should we give priority to money even if we must have lot of work hours or should we do a job that we like even if it implies to earn less?

The only risk is that your third point is weaker and people get bogged down in debating the third point, rather than absorbing the key message.
