CONTAINER GARDENING for BEGINNERS: 10 Simple Steps 

One year I raised 64 pots of vegetables and my elderly neighbor are well from my garden. Most containers I got cheap from a barbeque restaurant, but had to buy one 5 gallon container for cucumbers. I used 1/2 top soil 1/2 bagged compost. I ate a lot of veggies raw or stir fried quickly to keep nutrients. (I also bought raw almonds and made fresh almond milk twice a week.) Best thing about all of this was that my memory became much sharper even continuing for 6 months later after I had to move away and could not continue to garden. Still keep a bucket of bunching onions growing (now three years old) and smaller containers of fresh mixed greens planted about four days apart so I always have fresh salads.

All veg and fruit in my garden is container, it’s a balancing act and I’m loving it, everything this year due to a fantastic summer is doing well, uk... I would prefer raised beds but it is not possible so I’m becoming an expert at containers , not a drip water system in sight, keeping it basic and real , thanks for the tips, appreciated

Container gardening for beginners

OMG!!! Finally!!! A guide with step by step directions. I LOVE your channel!!! I have watched others that have the vegetables already planted without any guidance of size or types of pots to use or how many holes are needed. I live in zone 7 in Georgia but have not had much luck growing anything. I'm on the 3rd floor and only get the morning sun. I brought my house plants in for the winter and have them under grow lights. Perhaps I can use them on my balcony also after the sun moves. Thank you for the guide on types of pots. That may have been another thing that I was doing wrong. I have a deTf orange and lemon tree that I bought in 2019 that I have gotten maybe 1 fruit from each and that was BEGORE I reported them. None since then. After viewing this video. They get another chance before going in the garbage. Thanks again!!

An excellent video! I had not heard of the OLLA watering system. Looks awesome but quite pricey. There are some DIY options with terra cotta pots and a cork in the drainage hole plus a lid. Do you have any opinion on this inexpensive option or any personal recommendations? Thank you again for the informative and beautifully illustrated intro to container gardening!! I just retired and wanted to do something different, 1st I got a small back yard, I mean 20-25' Wide X 100' if that, so any way I got the 'PLANTING BAGS", and I mixed some soil, some of the seeds did germinate but only got a fruit or two. So I started all over, and the 2nd time did not work either, so I did some research & I threw away the bags, saved the soil, and I got 5 Clothing Bins w/lids. I drilled holes about 1'' up from the bottom all the way around, no holes underneath on each bin. Then I drilled holes on one of the lids, and then I SIFTED the soil, once done , I put 1:1 ratio cow manure, w/new shifted soil from new bag, peat moss, then I put 2 hand fulls of lime, 5-5-5 fertilizer. The 'SOIL MIX" came out very AIRY and SOFT, SHIFTING is Important, so I am now grow some cucumbers, yellow squash, 2 different varieties of tomatoes. I used ONLY HYBRID SEEDS, it is my understanding they will produce just one generation of fruit and that is fine, but the most important reason I chose HYBRID SEEDS, is that they grow both MALE & FEMALE flowers, they are SELF Pollinating. That is MY UNDERSTANDING. Other types of seeds will grow more FEMALE FLOWERS thAN MALE BY 10:1 RATIO. I know it is late into the season, but w/Climate Change,. I water the plants 2 times a week, and after watering them, I put a 1/2 tea spoon of Fish & Seaweed Liquid into a gallon of water, and then I only pour that on around the plants' base. I think I might get about a 3-4 weeks of cool mild weather before the freeze hits here in the Galveston, Tx area usually in late Jan or Feb for sure. So I will see what happens. But am looking forward to planting early next year.

My container plants always seem to get Iron-deficiency Induced Chlorosis.... I've supplemented iron 5-6 times the last 2 months!!! (Especially My Hibiscus and Jasmine. Malabar Spinach is slightly showing symptoms)

I love your channel. I have a question please. The soil for the container where you stated it needs 1/3 compost among other things. Where can I get the compost from please? I went to Lowe's and HomeDepot and there is nothing that label "compost". I spoke to the lady that works in the garden area. She said I can substitute with 1/3 of composted cow manure or composted chicken manure. Is this right? Thank you.

Notes: containers NEED drainage holes; Miracle-Gro fertilizer -- use per instructions 7 times then water very well with reg water the 8th time. It flushes out salts from MG; cukes & tomatoes won't do well planted together in the same container.

my experience from container gardening is: You will waste too much water. Even w/mulch it's too expensive. Last year, 2022 was trial & error, 1st I have a small grass yard. 20' Wide X 60' Long, so discarded all my containers and decided I still did not want to dig up my back yard. So I made a Raised Wood Garden, 8' Long X 3' Wide, and it stands 15" high. I built this in the middle of the Texas Drought and it came out perfect. I reused the dirt from the containers, and added bone meal & cow manure on the top, the middle was soil & the bottom are branches & cardboard . So I know that the growing season is all most over, but I planted cucumbers, red, yellow & orange bell peppers, and some tomatoes, all are growing great, and a lot less water. If you still want to go w/container gardening, try 1-2 containers at first and see how that works for you. I think container gardening can be good for one that lives in an apartment, but a raised garden is better, and much less expensive.

Hello, May you help me as I'm new to gardening. I am renting a house and wanted to start a garden with containers which I think if I started with raise beds it would not be beneficial to me if I ever have to start with soils.

My issue with container gardening is fertilising. Just as you say, we need to fertilise more often due to water drainage system. Considering your area it recycles back to your soil, considering others as mine, we don't have an inch of soil to drain through. It goes through drains. So i prefer raised bed or ground gardening more. Pots are good for ornamental plants.
