This is our 2024 summer harvest of our backyard container grown potatoes. The harvest is not as big as we had hoped, but it will help supplement a couple meals like a roast or veggie soup. Did you grow potatoes this year? How did they do?

We're in Panama City, Florida zone 9a, we grow potatoes in containers (5-gallon buckets well drained holes) and in ground garden too. We use a container mix of three equal parts (Black Kow, Potting Mix, and Peat Moss). Add a cup of bonemeal and a little balance organic fertilizer too. We average about 3 lbs. per bucket. Potatoes like a well drain fluffy soil to grow in. Happy gardening!

Thank you for the comment. I will have to change things up before my next planting. I appreciate knowing what works for you!

You cannot put soil from the yard into grow bags; it would become rock hard. Did you add any organic material? Did you feed the plants and I believe that you did not water enough.

No just yard dirt in there. There was a potting mix from last year as well as soil mix from a local place. It had organic matter in it. I didn't feed them until later in the season. We got a ton of rain early in the season and the hot real fast. I think the over saturation and then immediate heat basically baked the bottom third of several of my grow bags.

That soil looks worse than my old clay soil in the yard, which I don't use in pots. I bought potting soil, amended it with 10-10-10, well mixed in, some bone meal, well mixed in. During dry spells I gave each pot a cup of water. I planted the majority of my potatoes in 10" pots(10" deep). Put 2" of potting mix in the bottom, then put chitted potato on top of soil. Water, then add 8" of soil over top. I averaged about 2 pounds per pot(25 pots).

Try using potting soil in the grow bags. Potatoes need very loose soil, and regular fertilization in pots and grow bags.

Thank you. I will try to add some potting mix to my bags before planting next cycle. I appreciate the input.
