Polygraph tests are bullshit even when administered correctly but this guy doesn’t even come close to correct. 1. you read over the questions with the examinee before testing that way no question comes as a surprise. A surprise causes a response that messes up a test. These videos portray that all these questions are surprises written by the examiner’s friends. 2. Only 8-10 questions can be given in a polygraph session, and they must all be on the same topic and different ways of asking similar things. This is because if you have a response to one question, then you’re asked something totally different, you cause overlap and complete introduction of error in responses. They all HAVE to be on the same topic. 3. There’s usually multiple days of sessions where the same questions are asked in different ways to get more reliable data. 4. The questions he asks are incomplete. Simply asking “did you steal this design” is not enough. You would typically ask it in multiple ways to eliminate all avenues. like “were you aware of this design” “has your design team ever talked about this design” “did you take any inspiration from his design” - this is bc it’s possible in James head, he didn’t steal it because his design team did. Or he didn’t steal it because he simply took inspiration from it. So he is able to do mental gymnastics to displace the guilt. 5. A polygrapher doesn’t simply respond with: that’s true/ a lie. That’s inserting his own opinion into it. Instead it would be “possible deception detected” or “no deception detected” because the test can’t concretely say what is the truth vs a lie, it can only test physiological responses that correlate with deception. This is why when you use it in criminal investigation, the result of a failed test is never that the “defendant is guilty” It’s that the “defendant can’t be excluded as a suspect” 6. You can’t be in the presence of a bunch of people, obviously. All these videos take place surrounded by friends (including ones who wrote the questions, and ones who the questions are often about) that makes it extremely inaccurate. you would have a response to an uncomfortable question about someone who is in the room no matter what your answer is. You would have physiological measurements all over the chart when you’re surrounded by people shouting and laughing and freaking out over your responses.
