Contessa 26 foot junk rig sailboat - Single Handed: Great Barrier Is. NZ to Gulf Harbour, NZ

It's been a fractured summer here in the North Island of New Zealand, with lots of storms and strong winds from the north easterly quadrant. I managed to sail up to Great Barrier Island for a few days when the winds swung to the SW and brought with them sunny weather. But, it's just a short respite before the incessant NorEasters come back....

Beautiful cruise and wonderful to be your guest on board. I am more and more attracted to junk rigs and can't wait to try them out as soon as is possible. Why are they not more popular defies logic! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.

Ah this is that junk rig contessa 26 that I saw on trademe! was pretty tempted but already have enough boats. Looks like it goes great! may I suggest using a selfie stick (or camera lashed to boat hook) a hand held camera just can't take in enough to really capture the feeling of sailing but with a stick you can get most of the boat in the shot, and see what's going on a lot better

Very interesting. Can't help but notice that the doghouse on Pango looks alot like my old Wave Rover just better done. What dia/size are the battens in your sail?

For sure, you and Roger T were the inspiration for the doghouse. I will see if I can make contact with my sail designer (we have all been recently hammered by a cyclone and floods down these ways) who also ordered my battens from overseas, and get you the specs...it's a low aspect rig and the battens are aluminium.

It always baffles me when a video of a particular classic doesn't start off with a FULL SHOT OF THE VESSEL! A shot that sets us up for whatever specific the owner wants to show us. Without that setup, it's impossible to relate the following deck, layout, etc. scenes to where they are in the whole. Why you don't do this pisses me off. ML

At about 10:00 Pango appeared to be self steering even though the vane was not set up and there was no bungee on the tiller. Did Pango steer herself pretty much the whole way? Also, how would she have performed if you had gone about and tried sailing back in the other direction in these same conditions?

Hi Sailbad, I have a Simrad tiller pilot and did have it going - you can see it at 09:25 I also have a wind driven self steering system (WIndpilot), but I haven't set up the steering lines and pulley blocks yet....As to sailing to windward in those conditions (15-20 odd knots, lumpy sea) I would have had two panels only, and she would make her way to windward, but there would be spray, in those fresh conditions and it would take a lot longer as with any sailboat, even a close winded racing boat, you'd be putting in a quite a few long tacks as the wind would have been near on the nose, ie blowing from the Great Barrier area itself. Frankly, unless I had to sail to windward in those conditions to attend my wedding to a stunning looking lady,, I would have cracked off a few degrees and sailed somewhere else, anchored, and cracked open a beer...but she will claw off a lee shore if she has too. If you search for the 'Russell Tall-ships Race' video on my channel, you can see me beating to windward quite a lot
