CONTINENTAL KNITTING | HOW TO KNIT FASTER AND IMPROVE TENSION - Do you want to knit faster and with more even tension? Then Continental knitting is for you! The secret is in the way you hold your yarn and needles.
7 TIPS for Continental Knitting: • 7 BEST TIPS for CONTIN...
Learn How to Continental PURL: • Continental Purling | ...
In this video, I'll show how how to knit continental style. You'll learn how to hold your needles and yarn to make you a faster knitter with beautiful tension. As opposed to the throw method of wrapping the yarn with large movements, the continental style has very smooth and controlled movements that utilize your right hand to do the majority of the work.
Just like learning to tie your shoelaces, this way of holding your knitting takes a little time to master but the rewards are great. I'd love to know if this style works for you and any challenges you faced while trying to get the hang if it.

I knew there must be a simpler way to knit, a quicker way, and I found your video on the Continental method. I am very slow, but I will learn! It's SO much quicker, I can tell already, even as I am slow! Ther more I knit this way, the quicker I will become. Thank you! I know this is a five year old video...I hope you are doing well! hugs, Jeanie

I'm a suuuper begginer, I only learned the common continental knitting and Im doing my first actual piece, a scarf thats my step one for practice, doing the same stitch so i can improve BUT THIS? THIS CHANGED MY LIFE!!! I've always thought there was too much movement on the right hand and I thought i was doing something wrong I will try it RIGHT..NOW.

WOW😳have you ever opened my eyes 👀. I’ve been a knitter for 70years (my mom taught me, she was right handed, but I’m a “lefty”). I learned to knit right handed with the throw method 🥹. I tried the continental method, but never could master it………… I can’t do the throw method anymore without my right shoulder (arthritis) causing me pain 😬 I’m going to learn this continental method if it kills me! It looks so much easier on the extremities and I don’t want to give up knitting if I don’t have to. Your video has given me hope that I can knit without pain if I just give it another try Thank you so very much. Hugs, Patty 🧑🏻‍🦳

This is a great tutorial on continental style knitting. Learning anything new has a “pinch point” where one gets frustrated and this is often where people give up. The “pinch point” is the brain objecting to the unfamiliar, essentially saying “I’m not comfortable with this.” The brain/mind likes the familiar and doesn’t like the unfamiliar. This is why change can be challenging. Perseverance and repetition until the brain accepts the new information, is the key to learning something new. Once the brain is comfortable with and accepts the new information it becomes automatic. Like tying shoe laces, riding a bike, driving a car etc. Greetings from the UK.

@Sanne Lelie The first and last stitch being too loose is a common problem. I know of two quick fixes for it. First is you can really tighten up on the tension when working those stitches or you can SLIP the first stitch of every row.

Don't want to tread on any toes here but...Tove Cravens it sounds as though you knit the way Arne and Carlos do. Norwegian style and more specifically as they do in Setesdal. No left index finger up in the air which can become very tiring. It rests gently on your left needle. Very relaxing once you have the hang of it!

I just came across this video and am so glad I did. I decided to try to teach myself how to knit recently and while I've picked up the basic stitch it's been a slow and awkward progression. This style is not only fast, it allows my stitches to be much looser and easier to work with because it feeling much more similar to a crochet grip that I am very familiar with. Thanks for sharing.

I taught myself continental knitting two years ago, also soon after I started knitting using the throwing style, at first it was super loose gauge but I got stuck with it and love it. This method teaches the hands to distribute the workload, so one hand manoeuvres the working needle and another feeds it with the yarn, so each hand is important, none is left doing nothing, that way knitting becomes very relaxing and easy.

I have been knitting this fast way, continental knitting, for over 70 years but I make even less of a movement. I hold the left needle like a crocheter would hold her work, that is with the hand on top of the needle and the yarn over my index finger and under the middle finger only. And my index finger is right at the point of the needle, not up in the air, so basically I "pinch" the needle between my index finger and thumb.

I learnt both ways because my grand mother was french but my mother swedish. The continental purling the scandinavian way is complicated because one has to twist the needle in a funny way to catch the thread. I simplified the movement by bringing the thread on the front of the needle and grab the thread.

I like this and I'm going to give it try, but I wonder who uses their right hand when putting yarn around the needle? I use just my right index finger with the yarn wound round my fingers for tension, so I dont have to move the whole hand to form a stitch. Id like to see some more intricate stitches done Continental rather than just knit and purl, but I'm already practising those.

@@Grainneni I knit the same way. I thread the wool through my right-hand fingers the same way NobleKnits threads it in her left hand for Continental knitting ,and I use my index finger to loop the wool around the needle. There's no need to move the whole hand.

I'm pretty sure ethis is the style I learned as a kid. But it was so long ago I had to relearn, and whatever tutorial I found was the other method. And it just felt wrong and didn't click like it used to. So I've just been crocheting instead. But now seeing this I think i can actually take up knitting again.

I started knitting about 5 years ago, learned the English way but because it was so slow I stopped knitting for a while, the past year or so I have picked it back up (still slow!) Looked up faster techniques and found this! I think with a bit of practice to get used to hand position, this will be how I knit going forward 😊 thanks for making this video

The tension looks easier than I have seen before. I am a natural Irish cottage knitter, which is a fast knit, with little movement. However. It does not work well with short needles. As I am hoping to do knitting on a circular needles, I feel the continent method may be quicker

I'm so glad I found your tutorial first, after deciding to try continental style! I did look at several other tutorials, and they would "catch" the yarn way up high on the left index finger.I couldn't figure out how they could pull it back down through the stitch! I like how you do it, catching it at the left middle finger. I practiced last night and today, and I think I've got it down with very little movement of the fingers. I'm trying to give my arthritic right index finger a break; it's the finger used most with the flicking method. Now, on to purling!

@@nobleknits I did watch it. At the moment I"m working on a garter stitch blanket and a top-down sweater in the round, so no purling needed! When I get one of these projects off the needles, I'm going to get some practice on the purling. :)

I’ve been knitting since a young child. I stopped for many years upon discovering crocheting since it was faster. I then recently learned of this “new to me” method but couldn’t grasp it. You teach this method so well that I picked it up immediately! Thank you so much!

Hi Kim, The fact that you are a crocheter really puts you at an advantage learning continental knitting! Doesn't it feel like you're just crocheting with two sticks instead of a hook?!?!? I'm so happy it worked for you! 😀

I learned to knit when I was 10. (60 years ago ) and my grandmother taught me English. I find my tension with continental is not as good even though I learned that 20 years ago. But I use both with stranded knitting.
