CONTINUATION VS EXPERIMENTATION? Season 4 vs Season 5 SpongeBob Analysis 

I prefer season 4 because its high highs were great while its low lows weren’t that bad. Season 5 is really more of a mixed bag.

Season 6 is better at "turning people away from Spongebob" than Seasons 4 and 5 are. Personally, I'd say these two seasons are the most underrated seasons ever. I can't say I like Season 4 more than 5, or vice versa.

I personally prefer season 4. It feels far more consistent and the best episodes of the season really nail the pre-movie feel. However, I also have to give season 5 some credit for being very experimental and having even higher highs(even if the lows are pretty low).

I'd lump season 4 in with the "good" era, not the "classic" era. It still feels way too different from the previous 3 seasons.

To me, Season 4 is partly one of the "classic" seasons and partly one of the "modern" seasons. If anything, Season 4 is the bridge between "classic" and "modern" Spongebob, given the inconsistent tone. Personally, I would have had Season 4 be the final season Friend or Foe be the series finale, because I feel had Spongebob ended with that particular episode, then the series would have ended on a high note. Sure it wouldn't have been as high of a note as the movie, but a high note regardless, after all, better to go out with a bang than with a wimper. I understand that Season 5 wanted to be more experimental, the problem was the execution of those experimental ideas, with Atlantis Squarepantis being what I believe is the biggest missed opportunity the series ever had. I mean seriously, Spongebob goes to Atlantis of all places, and considering how the show already has an underwater setting, you had an idea that had so much potential... and instead, we get this weird Willy Wonka musical with David Bowie guest starring... and _he doesn't even sing_ (my guess is because of contract stuff), so I just feel it was a missed opportunity more than anything.

There’s no doubt that seasons 4 and 5 have more mediocre and bad episodes compared to 1-3, but if ask me, the good ones are just as good as seasons 1-3.

Season 4 is similar to season 9 as it feels like two different seasons combined.

Personally seasons 4 and part of 5 are kinda nostalgic to me. The end Point really was season 6

Season 4 is the obvious answer for me. Even the best episodes in season 5 don't recapture the magic of the first three seasons, unlike season 4, which I think does have some eps extremely similar to seasons 1-3. Like you said though, I appreciate both for different reasons, even if one of them turned out much worse imo.

I will always think Season. 4 is better. There are a lot of great episodes in that season and there really weren’t any bad ones. Except a few. Season 5 however had some greats but also did have a lot of bad ones.

Well, in my opinion atleast experimentation can stop a show from becoming completely stagnant. On the other hand, it can also cause a show to completely lose its identity, which is equally bad. But yes, I personally prefer experimentation. So Season 5 it is.

I still consider season 4 in the classic era of spongebob. It's not as good as the first 3 seasons, but it still feels like the original seasons. I don't really like season 5. That's when I stopped regularly watching it.

I love both seasons, but I prefer season 4. Episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty, The Lost Mattress, Skill Crane, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture, and Wishing You Well still had that classic pre-movie feel. Heck, even Good Neighbors felt like a slightly weaker season 3 episode.

I really like season 4. As it turns out, season 5 is more well-received than I thought. Now, most people think that season 6 started the seasonal rot.

When I first recalled the Krusty towers episode I could've sworn it was season 3 or older. In my opinion, it is truly the last classic episode before Spongebob's level of obnoxiousness skyrockets to inhuman levels.

Season 4 is actually my favorite season out of the whole show!

Season 4 feels like pre-movie, while season 5 started the trend of gross-out. Season 4 good, season 5 OK.

I think pretty objectively, season 4 is the better season. Any season with "To Love a Patty" in cannot be considered a very good season. But as far as season 5 goes, "To Love a Patty" is quite a blip. The second lowest episode of Season 5, I give about a 3/10, whereas "To Love a Patty" gets 1/10 from me. Season 4 however, I give the lowest episode a 3 or 4. So yes, I do think season 4 is better. BUT... if we're going by the good episodes, season 5 DOES have some really amazing episodes. Friend or Foe, Krabs a la Mode, Roller Cowards, the Patty Gadget, Blackened Sponge... these all could be some of the BETTER pre-movie episodes. Also, Night Light is a HUGE guilty pleasure of mine. I actually really like that episode. MM&BB appearing was a HUGE pleasant surprise for me. So overall, yes season 4 is better. But season 5 definitely shouldn't be sneezed at. Season 6 on the other hand................

Speaking of emulating earlier seasons, have you noticed in recent episodes, Bubble Bass has been appearing more often and has even had his own episode? It's like the writers heard you and Chuggaconroy's discussion.

Season 4 was definitely a step down from the stuff that came before it, but it still has some really fantastic episodes, and I think it's better than season 5 and overall a good season. In my opinion, the first truly awful season was season 6.

When I started watching Spongebob as a kid, I didn't really seem to care that much about the seasons. I watched seasons 1-4 along with the current season at the time (Season 5). I eventually grew up enough to realize how much better the old episodes were than the new ones. Shortly after I came to that realization, I stopped watching Spongebob all together. Now over 10 years later when I started watching it again, I started watching the ones I remembered first. A lot of these came in seasons 1-3, which I obviously enjoyed a lot of the comedy, and also had shifted to relating more to Squidward, but I also found myself watching a lot of season 4 episodes. Krusty Towers, Skill Crane, Fear of a Krabby Patty, Dunces and Dragons, Wishing You Well, Have You Seen This Snail, etc. I know now that these are considered highlight episodes of season 4. But I also found myself enjoying episodes like Good neighbors, Best Day Ever, All That Glitters, etc. Sure they weren't as good as the other episodes, but I could still easily watch them. They still had that classic underwater background noise, and generally had a decent story even if the comedy was a little lackluster. What did I notice about season 5? I only came back for the patty gadget and krabs a la mode. And when watching the rest of the season, I just didn't enjoy it nearly as much. So I feel like the true decline of Spongebob was after season 4. Although I do understand why season 5 is so different, I just don't find it memorable as an adult versus the previous seasons. So while it's widely accepted that classic Spongebob ends after the movie, I personally think it's after season 4. The other reason for my thinking of this is that season 4, while sometimes a bit of a lazy animation, has a similar animation style to season 2 and 3. Spongebob still was easy on the eyes (he didn't look like a highlighter) Seasons 5 and 6-8 especially had some of the most unflattering DESIGNS of Spongebob. And as I mentioned earlier, it kept the settle underwater background noise, and all the characters had the same voices (except Spongebob, while different, it doesn't bother me because it's settle). The last reason I still consider season 4 a classic season is because the characters were still relatively dynamic in personality. Spongebob still had some adult qualities, Squidward wasn't always a cynical and depressing character, and Patrick wasn't always dumb. Personally, this is one of the biggest reasons why it still has a classic feel. The characters are showing signs of Flanderization, but it's not developed to the point where the characters are dull and static. Even as early as season 2 could I notice settle signs of Flanderization. Did it make it a bad season? no, in fact, I think that season 2 is in the top 2 for the best seasons. Sorry for the giant paragraph, I went off on a tangent on this one. Although when I started watching season 6, I couldn't even finish the season. If I had to make a list of the best seasons, I would put them as 1: Season 3 (The humor in this season is about the best it will ever be in my opinion) 2: Season 2 (This season has the best average of good episodes, which makes seasons 2 and 3 interchangeable in my opinion) 3: Season 1 (This season is pretty much seasons 2 and 3 but slightly weaker... especially in the second half) 3: Season 4 (The first half seems more like a continuation of season 3 with a few kinks, and the second half is a little weaker. I think this season ties with Season 1. They are very similar in the way they progress in quality.) 5: Season 11 (The episodes are really good and have writing comparable to the classic seasons. The biggest problem for me is Squidward's voice change and the overly bright and exaggerated animation) 6: Season 10 (The same as season 11 but slightly weaker 7: Season 5 (This season is all over the place. The good episodes fit right in with the classic seasons, but the bad episodes just drag this season down so much. I do like the experimental aspect in this season though; which is why I place it above season 9. 8: Season 9 (This season came as a spark of hope for the dying remains of a good show. This season progresses in the opposite way that season 4 and 1 do; the first half is not that great, but the second half jumps a lot in quality.) 9: Season 6 (This season showed the last bits of good from a declining show. It had a few good episodes, but this is really where I stopped watching Spongebob) 10: Season 8 (This is similar to season 7 except slightly better) 11: Season 7 (This season is a perfect emulation of the titanic; even a show that seems unsinkable can be ruined for a lot of people with 1 season.)

I have an idea for a Spongebob discussion video: If you could abridge all of the episodes from Seasons 4-9 to just a specific set and ignore all of the other ones, what would they be? You can include as many recommended episodes as you want and leave out all the ones that may ruin the show for some people, but it would help if the selected episodes can be rearranged into a specific number of 22-minute shows, like thirteen per season or something. For instance, an eleven-minute episode from one show can be put together with an eleven-minute episode from another, as long as the full show's total runtime is about 22 minutes...You can include good episodes, meh episodes and even Scumbob episodes if you feel that something could be gained from them, as long as it doesn't ruin any enjoyment of the show overall. I'm asking this as someone who hasn't really watched the show since Season 3, and is very interested in checking out as many worthwhile episodes from the later seasons as possible, without the experience being brought down by the really bad ones (unless, again, you feel that something could be gained from said bad ones).

Okay, I really liked this video. Would you mind comparing Seasons 6-8 in the future as well as comparing Seasons 9B and 10 once you review Season 10? I would be very interested on what you have to say for these topics.

From my personal experience growing up, I think Season 4 is better than 5 because it felt very simmilar to the last two seasons (2 & 3). I liked Season 5 as well as a kid, but it wasn't until Spongebob stopped airing as much new episodes at around either season 8 or 9 (the early 2010's) when I stopped caring about Spongebob Squareoants.

I like Season 4 as a whole more, but Season 5 has my favourite episode in the entire series being "Krabs a la Mode" and some of my other favourite episodes.

This was the era where nothing too creepy could go down. Whereas the stuff of my nightmares has returned to haunt me again after that new episode. At that moment, I sure as heck wish I was in the UK then.

Season 6 was my turning point

I pick season 4 as better mainly because I find its episodes more memorable. Like, I couldn't tell what episodes are in season five off the top of my head, but I can tell you what episodes are in season 4. While season 5 does have some low lows, I didn't fall off SpongeBob until season six or seven so I find both seasons enjoyable at the end of the day.

Ideologically it's kinda hard to compare, since ultimately S5's philosophy won out, which produced S6 and S7(bad), and S8 and S9(better). Had they stuck with S4's ideology the show probably would have fizzled out more gradually, with less gems, but also less disasters

I have a soft spot for Season 4 and 5 because I grew up watching those seasons, with the first three of course. In my opinion, it doesn’t even matter which season is better, both are fantastic! Yes, there were some ok moments, but overall they’re still worth watching. Also, I feel like Season 6 was the one that made the series fell apart. There were some good moments, and of course there was some bad moments as well.

Pieguy I think It would be really interesting if you did a video saying if season 6 is more worse than seven or if it is the other way round. That debate has also been going on as well.

Also, I have a feeling Vincent Waller becoming Creative Director in season 5 could explain why the show took more risks

I would prefer Season 5 over all seasons of SpongeBob because it's my favorite season over all. It sometimes competes with my other favorite season, 3. Season 5 just had more interesting stories than other seasons did like a SpongeBob version of the Krusty Krab, cool music from a song written by Patrick, the nicer version of Squidward, an iced version of the Krusty Krab, a back story of two rivals, the original fry cook before SpongeBob started in Help Wanted, a western back story, more of SpongeBob's family, a travelling Krusty Krab, a clean vs dirty battle, a formula plan by turning characters into babies, Squidward becoming a hunk, SpongeBob proving he's a master frycook by defeating a patty machine, money literally talking to Mr. Krabs and more.

Seasons 4 and 5 are basically the "Post 1st movie" seasons, on the "1st 100 Episodes" DVD!

Episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty and Krusty Towers were so full of laughs it really felt like the old Spongebob. But beyond ones like those, it really did just feel like an entirely different show, and not in a good way to me.

Season 4's better cos I liked more episodes but season 5 was ok.

I love season 4 so much. Imo, it’s the second best season of the show.

I love them both equally. I can see season 4 is the better written season, but season 5 is still the only full season I have on dvd so I have always been more forgiving towards it and pretty much enjoy every episode it offers (yes, even Atlantis).

Unlike A LOT of people, I do consider both of these seasons to be good seasons. I do like a lot the episodes from both of these, and they do genuinely feel like seasons 1-3 at times. As for which one I would say was better, probably season 4. In season 4, most of the season was good or okay to me. Not a lot of truly bad stuff to choose from. Now there was a lot more bad than seasons 1-3 (I only think they had one bad episode and that was Sponge Who Could Fly,) I wouldn’t say more than 5 five episodes could be considered bad in my eyes. With that many good and okay episodes and only one truly awful episode (All That Glitters,) I think that season 4 is a better season. Now that said, I do very much genuinely like and respect season 5. It was very experimental, though I felt a lot of said experiments paid off. I love episodes like Friend or Foe, Spy Buddies, Krabs á la Mode, Spongebob vs the Patty Gadget, Pest of the West, and heck even Stanley S. Squarepants for being different, while keeping the same charm of the what is and was Spongebob. While there is more bad than season 5, most of the time it’s just failed experiments that they learn from, so said bad episodes actually benefit the series. For example, To Love a Patty was bad, but it was a failed experiment that was attempting to try something more akin to creepy. When that didn’t work, they didn’t do any similar to that episode ever again. So while I do think that season 4 is better, I do think that both seasons are good, fare I say worthwhile watches. But thats just my input.

I like what they're doing right now by giving the recurring and background characters their own episodes.

I first discovered you when I watched your Every Episode of Spongebob Season 5 Reviewed video (yeah up until the Season 9 reviewed, I haven't been watching the Every Episode of Spongebob Reviewed series in the correct order lol)) and since after that, I have been in love with your content. You are definitely my favorite Tv and Film reviewer on RU-vid. Your reviews are really detailed, analytical and insightful, with each of your points thoroughly explained. In terms of my season preference, I've always preferred Season 4 over 5. However, I do appreciate that the crew were making efforts to try new concepts in order to keep the show fresh, and it really shouldn't be of a surprise that there would be bumps in the way of the experimentation. After all, it's part of the test. Even in the end, the new ideas did bring some really creative and highly enjoyable episodes that are not only on par with the original first three seasons, but are indeed highly original. Nevertheless, I believe that generally, each Tv show has it's style of writing as it what makes a specific show the way it is. Of course it's good to accept change and try new things, but if it affects the overall quality of the show negatively, then that is not good, as it can be seen by Season 5's scumbobs which are signifacntly worse than Season 4's. So overall, Season 4 is better (IMO) as it kept the show's style and didn't try to alter it in a way that could be damaging, and through that, we saw some really good episodes and scumbobs that are far from the worst of the series. Seriously, if episodes like 'The Thing' is the worst Season 4 could do, then honestly it's not that bad of a season.

One reason I like Season 4 more... "No! No! I want to live! I WANT TO LIVE!" But Season 5 is still pretty decent.

I mean I can enjoy watching Seasons 4 and 5 as a whole. But if we were debating on Sitting through all of Seasons 6 or 7, the question would be a Mr. Krabs ask “Do I get paid for watching Season 6 or 7 all the way through?”

I prefer Season 5 over 4. Most friends of mine do actually. Tier 1 - 2 and 9 Tier 2 - 5, 10 and 11 Tier 3 - 3, 4 and 8 Tier 4 - 1, 6, and 7 None are bad seasons btw

I've always enjoyed Season 4 more personallu but Season 5 definitely had some nice episodes like Friend or Foe and Krabs a la Mode. I still would prefer the show occasionally trying new things since I don't think anyone can really keep an exact same formula going for too long and expecting it to do well.

I like season 4 much more. A lot of it’s episodes have a more consistent feeling, with some of the early episodes of the season feeling pretty close to pre-movie. I think this season has some of the best episodes of the series (i.e. Have You Seen This Snail?, Shell of a Man, Krusty Towers, Dunces and Dragons). It is possibly the only season with episodes that stand a chance against pre-movie (with some later exceptions such as It’s A SpongeBob Christmas and Mimic Madness). I have to give season 5 credit for taking chances, but I don’t think many payed off.

Whereas while Season 5 has zero duds (in my opinion), most of the good episodes aren't even that good (The Original Fry Cook, Pest of the West), and the season while still feeling classicy is only decent in my eyes due to the large amount of decentness. That's not to say there aren't any really good episodes (Blackened Sponge, Spongebob vs the Patty Gadget, Friend or Foe, Roller Cowards), and I'm not saying that season 4 doesn't have any low-goods (Whale of a Birthday, Fear of a Krabby Patty, Krabs vs Plankton), I'm just talking about the majority. I stop watching spongebob when season 6 came around, I like some modern episodes & Season 4 & 5 are kind of part of my childhood I see some flaws with them, the first five season were classic from my point of view

Spongebob Sqaurepants used to be my absolute FAVORITE show growing up, but now because of the handful of okay and bad episodes it has gotten, I started to lose interest in the show to the point where I don't even watch it as much anymore. If I'm correct, Stephen Hillenberg quit the show because he felt that the 2004 movie was supposed to be the grand finale of the series, until Nickelodeon started making more seasons. Also, while many Spongebob fans declare the first 3 seasons to be the best, probably because of how funny it used to be back then, very few people have noticed the animation quality upgrade by season 4. That was because of the show's huge success in the first place. And I'm not saying that the animation of the first 3 seasons was inferior, I still kinda appreciate it for being nice to look at in a few places. Most animated shows were done on tight budgets anyway, but I think I stand by the fact that the general entertainment of the show matters more than anything.

I pretty much agree with you and everybody else. Season 4 is my favorite post movie season because It's closest season that really captures that pre movie atmosphere ( Heck, I used to think season 4 was still pre movie when I was a kid cause a lot of the episodes didn't feel out of place ), there were a lot of great episodes ( Where's Gary, Krusty Towers, Fear Of A Krabby Patty ) and the while there are a few meh episode's, they do still have some good In them like the weaker pre movie episode's. Now Season 5 has some of my favorite episode's of the whole series ( Friend Or Foe, Spy Buddies, The Original Fry Cook, Roller Cowards, New Digs, Krabs ALA Mode ), but because it was a such risk taker, it ended up being draged down more to a mixed bag by having not only more bad episodes than the previous seasons, but they backfired MUCH more harder to the point of even causing some real ultimate damage to the show. Good Neighbors in Season 4 for example, I was willing to forgive and look past some of the flaws because while the episode was a bit lackluster, I can't truly hate Spongebob and Patrick because while they are at times ignorant, they never mean to really harm Squidward, and at least they gave him a cake to make up for them ruining his sunday. Compare that to a bad Season 5 episode where Spongebob can be literally driving like a maniac and putting peoples lives at risk like In Boat Smarts, or literally murdering clams to protect a rotten sandwich like in To Love A Patty. So yeah. That said, this video was very agreeable.

I like Season 4 more because it stuck with the classic Spongebob plots and it also had some amazing episodes like Fear of a Krabby Patty, The Lost Mattress, and Krusty Towers. Although Season 4's worst episodes were pretty terrible, Season 5 had some of the worst episodes of the whole show (Atlantis Squarepantis and Spongehenge). That is why I prefer Season 4 over Season 5.

I will always appreciate trying something new more than I will trying to recapture lost magic. It may not work much of the time, but hey, that’s storytelling :P

In my personal opinion, I would prefer season 4, but I think it's more becuase of the nostalgia that leads me... but neither season 4 nor season 5 made me stop watching the show, it was around season 6 or 7 (I don't remember clearly, it's been a long time since then ^^) when I realized that the show I once loved had changed completely and the love was gone... but now, with the latest episodes, it seems to return step by step...

I know a lot of people are going to disagree with me. But I think season 4 and 5 are the best Area of SpongeBob. Sure some of the episodes are not as funny as the first three seasons of SpongeBob. But I thought a lot of the episodes for both seasons work really good

To be fair, the worst kinds of media are the ones that are just eh. They aren't memorable, they're boring and I can't remember half the episodes of Season 4 because of it, whereas I can remember most of the episodes from Season 5 despite their quality.

In My Opinion I Really Love Season's 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5! I also HATE Season 6 With A BURNING passion!

The real question is what's better, Season 2 or Season 3?

I Personally Have A Strange Opinion, I Like Season 5 More Than Season 4

Season4 has higher highs in my opinion: Dunces and dragons,Have you seen this snail?, Krusty towers,skill crane,Mrs puff you're fired and Patrick smartpants. Just to name a few.

Thanks for notifying me about this video, RU-vid >_> I dropped off a few episodes into season 4, partly because of life stuff meaning I couldn't see the episodes consistently, and partly because I could tell there was something off about the show. But I did give S4 another chance a couple years back, and I actually did find quite a few good episodes in there. Not gonna lie, I did shed a tear during "Best Day Ever." >w>'' I think that would have made a really nice season finale.

On that particular note, I think that a brilliant idea for people who wanna view seasons 4 and 5, particularly in terms of a rewatch, would be to compile the best episodes -and potentially some less good episodes- of both. I say this for two reasons. 1. A season that is basically "Spongebob's Transitional Period: Greatest Hits" would certainly be welcome, as it has around 40-ish episodes to choose from going by your ratings, which is a length comparable to the first 3 seasons. If you could pretend this was the true season 4 and pretend that a collection of the best season 6-8 episodes was the true season 5, you could in a way, have the best Spongebob viewing experience. 2. It would work swimmingly for a transitional season: starting out by easing you in with familiar and similarly incredible episodes before shaking things up. It would a reminder that the show has to change, but that it will still be Spongebob in spirit. Easing people into that was certainly the best course of action, but I don't think it had to try that for an entire season before trying to take some real risks.

Season 5 is in my opinion the last good season I find the good out in that season out ways the bad of it

I like season 4,because even though I like season 5, much like seasons 1-3 this season has alot of classic moments like the piano gag in fear of a crabby patty.
