Why are you not using host name instead of ip addresses, i'de assume that being a long time techie you would want to set up a resolver database that would then allow you to resolve ipaddresses on your lan to machine names on that same segment.
For the past 22m some odd years of my computing life I have been both distribution hopping in the Linux universe and at several time have even setup a few FreebSD desktop instances on my personal gaming rig, this was after becoming completely disenchanted with the way Microsoft and Apple r use their customers as methods of mass data acquisition.
