Quick Quiz: Who is the Nemesis of Bill Rizer?
Did you say Red Falcon?
Bzzz, wrong.. clearly - it's a door! Why yes, never has such a feared enemy made so many attempts at the player's life - the Door - evil incarnate.
This is the MSX version of Contra. Several people asked for this because it contains double the levels of the NES version. But this game also proves that more levels does not a good game make.
I could complain about the sheer amount of slowdown in the game that makes sections all but impossible bar sheer luck, the cheap stage design (the cavern stages have several sectors where it is litterarly impossible to bypass without taking a hit. I am not kidding here), the lack of a Spread Gun, the sheer amount of those over-shoulder levels that no-one liked, the bizzare hit detection which means you have to be dead center to damage anything...
But I guess my main problem with the game is this:
Doors.
Really Konami? 11 of the bosses in this game are DOORS. DOORS. Granted, these Doors have guns, but still.. at the end of the day - they're DOORS. Why am I fighting nothing but DOORS. What the hell has Bill done to warrant the fate of being hunted by every door on the planet? Seriously.
In reality - my only real problem with this game, is the lack of variety. This is possibly the only entry in the Contra series that is boring. There is little creativity here.
This isn't a terrible game by any means, but it is far too long for this style of game, it's like they stopped trying halfway through. The NES game is miles better.
