Most commonly a reserve of pianists, other instruments can benefit from the harmonic application of the contrary motion scale too. Scales travelling in opposite directions can be used to create fascinating polyphonic lines on all jazz and fusion standards, as well as in your own compositions.
Used by players from Mozart, Chopin and Liszt, to modern monsters such as Art Tatum, Bud Powell and Oscar Peterson, the contrary motion scale offers simple but effective harmonic language and has been discussed frequently by Jazz pianist and educator Barry Harris.
In this video I'll demonstrate the head of Body and Soul by Thelonious Monk with contrary motion scales adding interesting polyphony to an advanced jazz guitar comping part. We'll cover the Bebop scales and the altered scale, however this technique can be applied to any and all tonalities to great effect.

Would you consider doing a short video on what are you listening to/liking these days? You can make it a series that you do every 3 months or so. I really like your musicality overall would love to know where your ear takes you musically over the next few years.

Certainly can do that Pranav! Thanks for the suggestion

I honestly think that having a good grasp and facility with contrary motion is key to improvising in a true polyphonic way. It’s tough though. I find playing contrary with any amount of legato to be elusive. Hundreds of hours of practice…

Relatively guitar friendly visually but certainly not technically as you say! I need to use these ideas more in my day to day playing to come up with some ready to go licks. Cheers

Thank you for exploring Barry Harris's system beyond the usual "6th diminished scale adds a note to help you land on chord tones" approach. Also Labyrinth of Limitations (with classical guitarist Tom Echols) is a great channel for further work on this. Love your playing and your teaching style very much!

@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition Hi John! Really lovely sounds in this. And I absolutely love what you said about chords "not existing" and the video metaphor. Great stuff. If you end up checking out the channel, episode 1: relative motion is where the convo about contrary, parallel, and oblique motion begins in the labyrinth:)

Tasty sounds... that bass though! So using octatonic scales seems to work great because the extra tension they create! Or maybe spicy scales like Hungarian minor and neapolitan minor!

The low end on this axe is unbelievable! It seems that octatonic scales are the secret sauce for many of the tastiest flavours in jazz!

Lol I'm on the other side, i like the fact that there are no sharp end s that might cut someone. I cut my hand and it bled on my headless strandberg, inspite of it actually have a slightly extended neck to keep the wire ends on the neck 's wood lol.
