Today we continue the Bob Moffatt collaboration series. Bob and me talk about our contrasting stick welding techniques while we do a 6010 root pass on a 8" sch 40 pipe. Dragging vs stitching angle, speed and hand positions. Hope this helps you out!

I've been welding for around 40 years and after watching your videos I realize that there is so much I have to learn that I dont know where to begin. I spent most of my time doing underwater welding which I guess is another story. Natural teachers like you willing to share their knowledge with younger people , who are not afraid to work for a living, are a treasure! My welding helmet is off to you!

Nice. this put a smile on my face. We use 7016 DCEN for open root and I like to drag it until the gap starts to close. Then I switch to a J motion. Longarc it a tiny bit on the straight part of the J to heat up the base metal in front of the puddle to keep the keyhole going. After that rod is finished I can up the amps and start dragging again. I'm a two hander like Bob, so messing about with a remote is not for me. Like always the secret is in reading the puddle and the keyhole.

K.I.S.S. principal works best for the most. I used the "x-mas tree" patern it as well for awhile but it was too easy, when I was beginning to be too slow with the patern and burn that key out. The drag method seems to work better for me now as the pacing of the pull (5 to 10 degree drag) is much easier and I figure that it'll work best for the most. It's nice to see the same result from the two different methods...Respect fellas.

You can hear the rod penetration with 6010. Both gave x-ray quality penetration one gave you more to grind being safe the other is wire brush and go. Both methods were showed excellent roots with 6010.if you don't hear the rod on the inside very little Sparks comming back you are then burning Thur.

I’m a whip guy I like to see the key hole and fill it back in and it makes the weld on the inside looks like you back welded it. When I drag it sometimes the arc tends to favor one side of the bevel which makes me nervous about passing x Ray
@saiason3904
@saiason3904 6 лет назад
Eloy Leyva you'll learn ol son.
@bobmoffatt4133
@bobmoffatt4133 6 лет назад
Eloy Leyva Yeah, I hate it when the arc tends to favor one side. At that point I start to stitch to correct it. But if it it's going in, I leave it alone.
@jca66
@jca66 3 года назад
I point the rod down a bit not directly to the center of the pipe. It puts the heat down and seems to prevent it from favoring one side. Also, you can see a keyhole open up under the rod. It feels weird but when done right the keyhole stays small and fills in good. I always pass x ray BTW.
@bobnewhart369
@bobnewhart369 Год назад
If your arc favors one side, point towards the other side. Wiggle or twist your rod to get the Flux off that's not being consumed. Old and dry bead rod can be a bitch and "finger nail" on ya. Especially if there is bad high-low on your fit
@patriotskingnation8084
@patriotskingnation8084 Год назад
@@bobnewhart369 you can’t really see it until you finish the weld. A whip movement let’s you see and it penetrates good especially uphill. But downhill and flat drag is the way to go

You better show the appearance of the penetration there. So we can compare your christmas tree pattern and the drag. We're not here to criticize bro. We are also a welder. In this video im half satistied. Im sorry to say. I hope you show us the root because Bob is saying we got to clean inside to see. But you and Bob only see the root and not the viewers.
@jca66
@jca66 3 года назад
Yes! I do this everyday and I want a visual of the root as well as an xray. If it doesn't pass why teach it?
@patriotskingnation8084
@patriotskingnation8084 3 года назад
@@jca66 same here. Quick question I’m learning 6010 whip and pause one instructor told me to pause for 2 seconds than whip and another told me to whip back and forth because that’s how pipe is on the field. I’m not sure if which one is the correct technique do you have an idea ?
@jca66
@jca66 3 года назад
@@patriotskingnation8084 the answer is there is no set time to pause. All you can do is practice until you get a feel for the technique. The rod diameter, material, amperage and position all come into play. Practice and eventually you will just get it by instinct. When I practice a new technique, I try as many new things as possible until something feels right.
@zekedelafuentejr5626
@zekedelafuentejr5626 6 лет назад
It's good to learn both techniques but my preference and the way I was taught was Bob's technique, but in reality the name of the game in the field is production, production, production,so the faster way is the better way if you take your time they notice how long you take but definitely both ways are good to learn
@patriotskingnation8084
@patriotskingnation8084 Год назад
For speed it should be downhill. The only thing about dragging uphill is you can’t see if both are hitting the walls until you finish the weld unlike a whip and pause you can see it when you lift the rod

It just as enjoyable the second time around on your channel. You had a pretty big keyhole at one point there...😨 & then you recovered it. Bob is fast and that's something that comes to mind when checking out his arc shots in his videos; He'll strike an arc, move the puddle FAST, and then you'll hear... Don't forget to subscribe to weld.com!

Xmas tree pattern is slower....during to the fact that you are opening the keyhole wide and I return are adding more metal. Drag is quick.....but more likely to leave an edge.

First time ever seeing drag technique with 6010 on pipe, an I'm in school now an I want to try it because this 6010 pipe has been kicking my ass! Does having the heat high make the dragging easier, or the dragging angle or both?! Note. IT'S JUST FREAKING 2G

So honest question. If both welds are equaly sound, wouldn't the drag method be superior in terms of cost effectiveness? The Christmas tree method used more rod and in the long run that would cost more would it not? This is to say if both weld methods are good
