In Season One we demonstrated a few options for enhancing and controlling sustain. An additional recommendation that came up was the use of cotton balls INSIDE the drum to gate the reso head. In this episode, we explore this method by adding one cotton ball at a time for comparison.
The tuning never changes, as we used a nesting floor tom that separates at the middle so we could simply open it up and add cotton balls as we went. Additionally, we brought an SM57 in as a close mic so you could hear the sustain as clearly as possible. PLEASE use headphones, as you will have a much easier time hearing the difference as we add more and more cotton balls. Tuning floor toms can be a real hassle and people often cite Benny Greb is one of the main users of this particular muffling method.
