When trolling for trout, I like to double stack my downriggers to target fish throughout the water column. In addition, I always topline to catch the shallow fish that you can't even see on the fish finder.
In this video in Lake Camanche, a Motherlode lake, I show you step-by-step how to double stack your downriggers. I explain the importance of setback in relation to water clarity and how I choose my setback on the top and bottom downrigger as well as the topline rod and the solo downrigger. Then, I'll go through my favorite tackle and gear that I use trolling for trout so you can land limits!
This is the second of a two part series on Trolling for Trout:
1. Episode 1: How To Troll for Trout - California Motherlode Lakes - • Trolling for Trout (La...

Hey Alan, do you prefer that over shuttle hawks? Have you used shuttle hawks?
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 3 месяца назад
No I don't use them. I just stack with a clip onto the cable with a release. Have no problem and can adjust depth by putting clip where ever.
@missbobbi666

The style of stack release you use on cable can it be used on a Downrigger using braid
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
If you have braided cable where you want to stack you need to put a scotty stopper where you want the clip or it will just slide down.

Thanks for the instructional video. I've always been leery of stacking because I'm afraid of lines getting tangled. How do I prevent that?
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
On my Kokanee video I show hot I stack will post on the 9th. But on bottom I usually put set back about 30ft and then go down 10ft stack but only half or lee the distance on bottom like 10ft set back and you won't have any problems

Been using stacked lines on downriggers for years. Oregon allows 2 rods per person on lakes if you pay for 2 rod endorsement. I personally switched to Chamberlain stacker releases and never have gone back to any other method. Sure can be wild when 3 or three rods go off at the same time.
@AlanFong
@AlanFong Год назад
California allows two rods also if you purchase the two rod stamp only from the Carquinez bridge in on river and lakes.

Alan..looks like you are using a Daiwa Lexa. I have a left hand model but the line counter counts backward when releasing line. Is that normal?
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
no it should go down counting 1 thru 100. When line all way in reset counter and try again if not bring into warehouse

Thank you for the information I will be reviewing this video many times for a refresher and I will be looking for the gear. There is so much tackle available for trout but now I have a starting list. I will be on Fisherman’s Warehouse website for a Father’s Day shopping list

Your video is very instructive and it’s the way I learned, but it in my case, it took me many years to learn because there were no RU-vid videos back in my early fishing days. I wanted to ask you why my downrigger is not retrieving. Could it be because I used braided line instead of cable?
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
If you put braided line on your downrigger and just tied it onto the spool its probably slipping on spool. You need to tie it thru the hole on the spool so it won't slip.

How many feet back should my lure be if I’m using a dodger?
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
On the leader behind the dodge the length should be 1 1/2 time the length of the dodger. And on the set back depending on how much action I need on the dodger is how far behind the cable on Kokanee most time 10-30 ft back. I'll be doing videos on all this soon!

Just a little input from Reel tech Kirk.. Unfortunately On the Daiwa Lexa Line counter series of reels if you use the clicker too much to let the line out too fast it will eventually break because the brass wire Clicker spring is very thingand fragile and I get a Lot of these in the shop to be fixed and I try and tell customers not to use the clicker too much and extended long fast pulls!
@AlanFong
@AlanFong 2 года назад
when using the downriver an stacking you need a clicker so reel won't back lash lol
@Rollin-With-Kirk
@Rollin-With-Kirk 2 года назад
@@AlanFong yeh I get the reason why the clicker is used But on the Daiwa Lexa Line counter low profile reel's the line clicker is made of slim brass and breaks from too much clicking= basically vibrates so much it breaks.. =)
