Hello all and welcome back to Allan Walls Photography.
Thanks to all of you who are supporting my work through Patreon and with your donations!
In this video we take a look at specular highlights and learn how to block those that we don't want, using my DIY cross-polarization macro lighting kit.
To get a copy of the cutting diagram, please check out the accompanying article on my website, which can be found here:
www.allanwallsphotography.com...
The following is a complete rundown of all the parts needed to make your copy of the cross-polarization kit. Some of these items include links to where you can find the items used in the video. Please note that, as an Amazon Affiliate, I may earn a small commission from qualified purchases.
1) CPL filters - you will need one for your camera and one for each of your flashes. I use Hoya Pro1 filters, but any good quality filter should work. amzn.to/3axCFQL
2) The thick foam pads that I use can be found here... amzn.to/3rbo8kl
3) The thin sheets of foam I use are these ones - be sure to get the 12" x 18" size! amzn.to/2Yu93hj
4) The only contact cement you will ever need! amzn.to/3cnKGdh
5) The sharpest and longest lasting knife blades. amzn.to/3te9Il2
6) I recommend these flashes for all your macro work. This is a great deal as it includes my preferred trigger device. amzn.to/2L9tUne
7) My go-to APS-C camera for most of my macro work - all the bells and whistles and a great deal. amzn.to/36rCCo4
8) This is the new and improved Z-tripod head that replaces the one I used in this video. amzn.to/2MG3SYU
9) The bendy arm flower holder was borrowed from my awesome Quad Hands grabber thingy. amzn.to/2MFBc2t
10) The ubiquitous bendy arms and clamps that I use in every video I make! amzn.to/3coAFg7
11) Here are the rings that I used to "bulk up" the polarizers - be sure to get the same size as the filter - in my case it is 77mm. You will need at least one, but I found it was even more stable with a pair (one step up and one step down) amzn.to/2YBdJCh and amzn.to/2MMsq2L

I'm really glad you made this. Many common macro subjects can have a characteristic blown highlight look that I really dislike.

All the other photography channels shy away from explaining polarized filters - etc. I knew what it was back in the 70's yet your visual aids were great at getting the idea across. Good job! Also brilliant idea with the flashes.

You are beyond great. I have been working my fingers to death in LR attempting to get rid of those spectacular-highlights. This is the first time I have ever heard about "cross-polarization", even in our photography club sessions. We have had others come in and demonstrate their macro workflow and none of them talked about this. I really thank you for sharing this and now I need to build tubes. I have 85% of the materials on hand to that. Again I really appreciate you taking the time and showing all of use how to make our closeup and macro work better.

Ingenious! I have played around with polarizers for decades, but that's new to me. I was more fixed on color enhancement.

You sir are wonderful, I have tried and tried to get the highlights under control, I had tried a polarising filter but it never occurred to me to add one on the flash, Adding them to the godox round head flash for the Ad200 was increadably easy and they work a treat, Consider yourself elivated to God status.

@@AllanWallsPhotography I'll try putting the polarizer between the objective and the tube lens when I get my infinity-corrected objective. I might even try to sneak the polarizer in behind my AmScope 4X. Experimenting will tell me if it works! Also, though I'm working with flash, I think I can get the polarizer angles set up with a bright flashlight subbing for the flash. I'll let you know how it works out. My plan is to leave the lens polarizer fixed, then rotate the flash polarizers one at a time and jointly to adjust. Others have suggested polarizer sheets which might be really great, because then you could polarize diffused light. So flash hits diffuser, then polarizer is on the other side of that sheet. I don't see another way to use diffusion and cross-polarization.
@AllanWallsPhotography
@AllanWallsPhotography 3 года назад
@@johnd7564 Absolutely - that is what the infinity space is for, in microscopy. I wouldn't put it too close to the relay lens though. That could cause some internal reflection issues.

Good stuff, Allan! Thank you for sharing. Most likely there was a mismatch between the two flashes was due to the angle differences.

PS: I am working on designing the flash plate and the polarizer plate in a 3D application I use. The tube can also be fabricated using the same process. I would love to share this with you and if it comes out and works, I would like to send it to you for you to test.

Thanks Allan; really well explained. I have long found specular highlights to be a real pain, but this is the first time that I have actually understood what causes them. Your kit seems like something lots of macro photographers could benefit from. Does anyone currently make a commercial version, or will we see AWP branching out into design and manufacture?
@AllanWallsPhotography
@AllanWallsPhotography 3 года назад
Hi Barry - I was just emailing you! To the best of my knowledge, there are no commercially available cross polarization flash adapters, but that's probably because folks don't realize how useful they would be - but you've got me thinking....
@Pautiwa

Hello again Allan. Can this method be scaled up with softboxes? As soon as I watched your explanations I looked for big polarizer film sheets in Amazon and found several that perhaps could be used to cross polarize >>soft

Loved this video! I've only relatively recently picked up photography and so far I've only experimented with using a screen as a light source to photograph birefringent things. Controlling specular highlights seems like it would be more broadly useful for general purpose use. I'm guessing the quality of the polarizers on the flash unit doesn't matter too much as long as they're sturdy and polarize?
@AllanWallsPhotography
@AllanWallsPhotography 3 года назад
That is mostly true. I have done this with a variety of polarizers over the years, linear and circular, and some of the really cheap filters can be hit and miss, with some highlights remaining. But any decent set will get the job done.
@roybixby6135

I'm Lazy - I found you can buy metre square polarised sheets to do a similar job....
@michaelmckeag960

Yes, linear polarizer film is readily available. Edmunds is one source. And it will be much easier to fabricate a rectangular hood from black foam core, attaching a sheet of film (cut to size) to the front and a rectangular piece of foam core board to the back with a hole cut to match the profile of the strobe. With two strobes, if the polarizing film is oriented consistently with respect to the strobe bodies, then getting the polarization directions of the two strobes approximately aligned will be easier. If a larger polarized diffuser was desired, it would be easy to fabricate using polarizing film. An acquaintance does landscape photography by cross polarization, needless to say, intimate landscape subjects, shot on moonless nights. His light sources dwarf those used for macro photography.

Another great project Allan but I have a question. Already have a very good CPL filter for the camera but don't wish to purchase several more. Can I use readily available linear polarized filter sheets on the flashes instead for the same results. Thanks for all the projects!
@AllanWallsPhotography
@AllanWallsPhotography 3 года назад
Hi John. Yes you certainly can. I had a long section about linear polarizing sheets but ended up cutting it in the interest of time. It is fiddlier to use linear polarizers as they will still need to be adjusted to match orientation, but they will work well.

@@AllanWallsPhotography Given your super cool cage, any reason you couldn't just twirl the entire flash body to change the polarization angle?
@AllanWallsPhotography
@AllanWallsPhotography 3 года назад
@@johnd7564 If I was using the cage that would be another option, for sure. But I was doing the demonstration with the cage and had both flashes on a flat table, leaving the angle of the filter as my only option.

How big is this setting if shooting portraits of a person? Strobes have much bigger opening than 77mm.
