Controlling two linear motions of an object 7

The magenta motor controls the movement in the X direction.
The green motor controls the movement in the Y direction.
The two motors are grounded.
Rotation from the green motor can be transmitted to the movable orange screw thanks to the prismatic joint (sliding key) between the yellow gear and green shaft.

This is similar to how many lathes drive their power cross slide feed. The powered leadscrew has a keyway, and a keyed gear rides in the carriage, sliding along the leadscrew. When the power cross feed is engaged, the gear is connected to a 90-degree drive, applying its rotation to the cross slide feed.
@thang010146
@thang010146 2 года назад
Yes. In lathes, worm drives are used instead of helical gear drives.

This could be really cool to see in a cube-style 3d printer to keep all the motors outside the enclosure!
@SirSpence99
@SirSpence99 2 года назад
This was actually my thought too! Moving the motors outside of the heated area lets you potentially print more exotic materials. I'm not sure though whether or not this specific design (well, a variation on it) would work well as it looks like it might be pretty heavy. I'm also not a fan of that 90 degree direction change... The belt would definitely need to be done away with, you don't want to risk that adding in a variable skew at higher accelerations.
@Lozoot2
@Lozoot2 2 года назад
@@SirSpence99 I was thinking center the belted motor (let's call this motor Z) and move the linked output to the opposite side (belt output Zb). The existing motor (X) stays where it is to become the X axis. If you add a third motor (Y) with a beam & carriage perpendicular to the X axis you'll have your Y. All 3 motors could potentially even be on the same bar. Like: ______(Zb)______ | | | (Y)---(Z)---(X) If you make the bed static and set it up so the gantry is what moves, weight shouldn't be an issue I like this concept, I might have to fire up fusion 360 and throw something together for shirts and goggles
@SirSpence99
@SirSpence99 2 года назад
@@Lozoot2 You should definitely send me an image if you get something. Changing the X axis to actually be Z is probably a good call. You could get rid of the belt by adding a second motor as well. Aren't you going to run into a problem with the Y axis motor is now moving as well and as such needs to be in the heated area? I'm not sure I agree that weight shouldn't be an issue, that affects maximum accelerations. I *might* do something once I get a new belt on my voron 2.4. (I was expecting replacement belts Monday, got them today!) Though... I do have several other projects that take priority. Worst case, I could probably send an animation of what you put together to a friend of mine who builds printers for a living, see what he thinks.

Is it compulsary that the rotation completes 360 degree round in every stroke. It may be come back in same direction around 180 degree too and fro.

are they 2 worm gears (orange and yellow)? how's the worm gear (orange) attached to the lead screw??
@thang010146
@thang010146 2 года назад
The orange and yellow are helical gears. The yellow gear has a prismatic joint (sliding keys) with the green shaft. The orange gear is fixed to the orange screw.

Wow... I am trying to make exactly this (I am talking about the way this works, not about exactly the same parts and configuration) in my home made 3D printer... for like few months now... Someone with better tools and much more money is probably going to make it before me :/ Ehhh... that's sad. Anyway, cool animation.

i considered it for a while after making a leadscrew based printer/cutter. good way to get the stepper motor weight off the moving assembly. looked into price of splined shaft. there IS a linear ball spline, "feather key way", the standard ground rod but with grooves. not exactly cheap... not very popular. sigh. thats as far as it got.
