So how do you dissect the word, because there are only 2 syllables that mean we are 40😅, by the way, I am a language nerd. so there are suffix, preffix?
@@xxstormxx56it's not a 100% fact that it means this, but in kyrgyz "we are fourty" will be "kyrkbyz" where "kyrk" is "fourty" and "-byz" is kinda like "are/we are", but it can also derive from various other interpretations so nobody knows for sure
@@xxstormxx56Wiktionary: кыргыз (kırgız), possibly derived from кырк ууз (kırk uuz, “forty tribes”); or possibly from кыргыс (kırgıs, “imperishable, inextinguishable, undying”); or less likely from кырк кыз (kırk kız, “forty girls”), a reference to the Epic of Manas unifying forty small tribes against the Chinese and the Muslim expansion. Wikipedia: There are several theories on the origin of ethnonym Kyrgyz. It is often said to be derived from the Turkic word kyrk ("forty"), with -iz being an old plural suffix, so Kyrgyz literally means "a collection of forty tribes".[23] It also means "imperishable", "inextinguishable", "immortal", "unconquerable" or "unbeatable", as well as its association with the epic hero Manas, who - according to a founding myth - unified the 40 tribes against the Khitans. A rival myth, recorded in 1370 in the History of Yuan, concerns 40 women born on a steppe motherland.
@@unfathomablyunfathomablethat’s the point. The ussr tried to dehumanise the other counties, making them mere “shadows” of the “big guy” - the same big guy who committed genocide more times than anyone else ever in recorded history
I prefer the original flag too! The Soviet Hammer & Sickle flag is MUCH BETTER!!! It would let me feel working class solidarity to it even though I'm not from there.
The sunbeams are different and there's an added ring between them and the yurt symbol. I'm not surprised that it's so easy to miss. I bet no one would even notice if it wasn't pointed out (unless you are familiar with flags or are Kyrgyz).
Gotta say that is very controversial. As with others i had to go back and compare, as they are so similar. Why bother? Unless something was offensive or imposed by some other country, seems grand to me. Clearly, i have no expertise on this matter.
@@edin5317 Thank you for pointing this out to everyone because I was just about to reply with a comment that was gonna say something along the lines of, "You guys do realize that the original Flag is much much older than even the 1st Generation of Xbox Gaming Consoles... right?" Good on you, mate, for beating me to the punch!
The symbolism of the original flag is important. I mean really, can you see some congressman suggesting the USA change the configuration of the “Stars n’ Strips”? That actually might get 90% of the voters to the polls!😱 🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸 No sometimes modern isn't better. But ultimately, it’s the people of Kyrgyzstan that make the choice. 🇰🇬
The meaning didn't change😐 the newer version also has 40 rays that depict the tribes and the middle of the flag also remains the depiction of a tunduk, just that the lines got a bit thicker.
@@user-sf9gs2pg1b Dude that's the thing, I totally know what you mean, I should at least have a purely aesthetic preference, but really I think they both look nice. I'll watch again and see.
Kyrgyzstan resident here. New flag is a shitshow, they keep proposing slightly different versions of it and confusing themselves. For example, the one they raised on the central square with a big ceremony and the president present turned out to be an old makeup and they had to quietly switch it a week later. Nobody wants it changed, but protests are pretty quickly shut down 🤷🤷
I had to pause the video to see the changes. It seems so strange that they want to make such small changes. Why are they adding the 4th stripe? Why do they want the sun's rays?
So apparently a debate was held in the Kyrgyz parliament to straighten the wavy sun rays due to its supposed similarity to a sunflower, which in Kyrgyz culture can signify "a fickle and servile person willing to switch allegiance for personal benefit".(according to Wikipedia, Reuters, Commersant/Коммерсантъ) But imo it does make the flag look uglier tho
@@antimatter_nvf pretty ironic considering the coupling of flags and allegiance, and the assumption of personal benefit on the part of the political body pushing for change...
The new one doesn't look that bad, but the older one looks better with the wavy sun lines. I see they added an extra central crossline, eh. I say listen to the people. They're the ones the flag represents.
Why don't the Kyrgyz mention: Changing the flag will cost a heck of a lot of money. The change will not improve the lot of the Kyrgyz people. Ridiculous!
As someone who is interested in flags (and who has made videos about flags on my RU-vid channel, I found this to be quite informative! I didn't know the Kyrgyz flag change was controversial. Thanks for the information!
The second flag looks more accurate if we talk about what it supposed to represent. Aesthetically doesn't make much difference. It doesn't look better or worse, but it looks more accurate.
I love how the literal only reason it's controversial isn't anything cultural or historical, people think it's ugly Lol It is pretty ugly though I prefer the old one
It's controversial because most of the people dont like it but the government still decided to change it thus saying that they dgaf about the opinion of the people. Another revolution is coming soon i guess
@@TheUnknownShadow03to be fair, this kinda reflects the overall decline in Kyrgyz democracy, because basically the whole story was that the president said he wanted to change the flag, the parlament supported it almost unanimously without much discussion, and it was passed despite almost everyone speaking out against it. Moreover, some people were arrested or summoned for "a conversation" to the local FBI analog (that has been concerningly expanding its influence over the past couple of years) because they were speaking out against the new flag on the internet. So I'd argue it's not that innocent and represents the ongoing decline into an autocracy in the least autocratic country in Central Asia (as long as Mongolia isn't considered Central Asia ofc)
@@OlegWoronin Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus all are belong to Eurasian (Russian) cultural sphere. Autocracy is the way to rule in this lands!!
@@kubv23 Mongolia is a democracy btw, although a flawed one. Still miles ahead of everyone else in the region. The thing about Kyrgyzstan is that there's been a few revolutions here in the past 20 years, and it's still the freest country in the region with a relatively good human rights record as well, however the recent decline is threatening to put an end to it. In fact, just as recently as in 2020 the country was still considered a hybrid regime, however after the current president took office back in 2021, things started deteriorating
President Sadyr Japarov, says the wavy yellow rays of the sun on a red field depicted on the current flag resemble a sunflower. The Kyrgyz word for sunflower is "kunkarama," which can also mean "dependent." Japarov is now expected to sign the bill into law, which, according to the lawmakers, will allow the "straightening" of the sunrays to make the image look more like the sun.
Im actually living in Kyrgyzstan and i dont like the new flag, it feels off, especially if you lived your whole life seeing it. So i feel that the change is just a wierd attempt to make it more modern but as many would agree it isnt very good. Ps: i never thought of the Kyrgyz flag as the xbox logo now i can never unsee it
I don't see a problem with the new flag from a practical point of view, but the old one does feel, like idk, less geometric and kinda better. I would still choose the new one, myself, but I am not the collective people of Kyrgyzstan. That is a decision the people and government will have to face.
I understand and i see your point but it feels..... Weird? Idk how to explain this(I live in Kyrgyzstan) but the wavy lines make it more.....ok? I don't really know but everyone who I talked to about it hates it
As far as I can see they removed one line from the middle crossing lines and made the suns rays wavy! It’s barely changed lol so unless there is some significance to the four lines then I don’t see why they want to change it anyway
I could see why they don't like it. The new flag looks like something designed by some tech company's designer for some cheap mobile app. It looks very dated.
If the government changes the flag to the 2024 version, you can plainly see the traditional Yurt has FOUR squares inside, NOT NINE. Will they change the Yurt next?!
They changed it anyway, missed one line so it was 39 beams (40 beams means forty united tribes) and put in jail a couple of influencers for agitating against the new flag
Can a corporation sue a country over copyright infringement? Someone needs to find out. A head of state should change their flag to the Valve Steam logo.
Additional argument, the cost of changing to a new flag design when its not even different is also a big sham. It usually takes a lot of manufacturing to put flags in areas of government.
I remember doing the updated designs on Wikipedia for the new flag and that process of trying to figure out what the actual pattern is, waiting for the specs to come out, it was a headache. Frankly, I think the change was trying to score brownie points and not really something that was needed.
Seeing the flag change in Kyrgyzstan reminds me of what often happens here in Australia. Governments stirring up distractions like flag debates while the real issues-like healthcare and education-get ignored. Standing with the people of Kyrgyzstan, hoping we all stay focused on what truly matters and hold those in power accountable.
I think it would look better if it kept the sun look of the original. The extra lines also make it look a bit too busy on the inside portion. I prefer the original though, unless they make those changes. I mainly like the new one’s red ring, it’s slightly thicker and more even throughout.
As a westerner who doesn't know enough about Kyrgyzstan to understand the symbolism of these changes, I have no strong opinions. So here is a weak opinion. The waves on the old design are waivier. wooooo.....
It's a subtle even small change to be sure, though personally I like the sun motif that's crystal clear in the old design more than in the new one. Honestly, they shouldn't have announced anything if the changes were going to be this minor.
Idk I don’t live there nor do I ever plan on living there but I think if they just kept the middle bit with the same number of lines crossing and basically just straightened out the outside sunbeam things then it would look pretty good.
I’m a Kyrgyz dude, born in Russia living in the west now, I got the old flags sun tattooed on my shoulder. Safe to say lil cheesed about the change when it’s unnecessary and the majority of Kyrgyz citizens are not in favour of the change to begin with 😂 gonna be a fun dad story for my kids one day tho (hopefully)
So what is the change? Looks like those corporate rebrands where some agency charges a fortune to slightly change a ripple or two in the original logo.
I mean it kinda looks more «modern» I guess is what you would call it, but it's not some company's logo which get modernized all the time, but a national flag, so I don't necessarily see the point in changing it. Anyway, the government of Kyrgystan should let the people decide really.
I could barely tell the difference at first glance, so why change it at all? If the change is that minor, you might as well leave it as is and keep the people happy.
That's too small of a change to be visually meaningful from a distance. The old flag looks fine as it is, but might be nicer on a grass green background instead of the red. But if the red has actual symbolic significance that's popular, best to leave it as it is.
Microsoft needs to pay royalty for that logo 😅 also why change something the people like and stand behind for such a small but divisive element change. You wanna pick a design and hold to it ( referring to their original choice) it shows stability and endurance. Unless your Arkansas you gotta stick to your flag design
Thanks, I am from Kyrgyzstan 🇰🇬, I very proud that I am Kyrgyz! Thank you so much again! I think old flag is better, because there on flag 40 rays looks better, and not like in MC Office
Think about the money wasted to make the change (bearing in mind that it's not very different) and then consider that it's not what the people actually want. Some things are best left alone and I suspect there are more pressing issues that could be addressed with the money saved.
both pretty cool. is there any info regarding WHY they want to change it? just a refresh/update/new foot forward? If so, I say, why not? they never had a borat to promote them. only that one weird yt vid where the whole place is deserted and everyone's weird. something should change, especially now that their big brother is decaying into irrelevance.
The changes they wanna make seem so insignificant, why have a debate at all? And especially why go through all the trouble a new flag brings, such as the cost for replacing all the ones at official buildings etc. And the sun design already looks better than the rays. Plus why the hell did they add another stripe in the center
Exactly. There was no official debate. They just arrested everyone who was against it(didn't charge with anything serious though, just tried to scare and released), didn't do referendum and just changed it
Net negative looks almost the same. Would be interested in why they want to change it. Either to look more like the yurt and less like the sun, or will be easier to fabricate/draw. Straight line v squiggled? Or is there another reason.
Kirgistan background seems to be written for a fantasy RPG setting rather than a real life nation state :D also I honestly never noticed their flag and it is really cool and apart from the usual rules for flags of Western countries.
