The recent removal of the mother and child statue from Glastonbury's Chalice Well has ignited significant controversy within the community. Created by artist Ganesh and inspired by the works of Eric Gill, the statue was cherished as a symbol of the divine feminine and the Earth's nurturing aspects. This decision has left many feeling that a vital spiritual and cultural element of the sacred site has been lost, prompting a heated debate on the preservation of its heritage.

It is back now, including other statues, plus they will be adding more.

It's part of the countries spiritual history & should stay there forever, the same as the pagan stone circles should as well.

Lets turn Chalice well into a new Jerusalem where rival "religious" "spiritual groups fight it out for control of their "holist of holies". Doh!

Is it? Not in the original space. I'm now experiencing anger that a small group of people felt entitled to act without any consultation to erase a symbol of divine feminine. Who do these people think they are? They should consider their position as Trustees and step away.

@@pamrobinson4350 I agree, I have emailed saying that banishing the statue to the meadow is saying 'something' to people.

"When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be Let it be, let it be Let it be, let it be Whisper words of wisdom, let it be And when the broken-hearted people Living in the world agree There will be an answer, let it be." It's vital for the trustees to clarify that this is not a Gill statue, but rather one created and imbued with intentional spiritual purpose by the actual sculptor. I feel deep empathy for the sculptor, as his authentic, original intentions are now unfairly overshadowed by any association with Gill, which is deeply perplexing. It is also a misnomer to say it’s an exact copy. It was inspired by Gill, but after comparing both, they are really different on many levels. Gill himself was inspired by Greek art and looks similar to many mother and child icons. This is a game of telephone. I find it troubling that some claim this is an instance of "wokeness gone mad," as I identify with the concept of wokeness. The term "woke" means to be awake to injustices in the world. Deciding how other people's trauma affects them/is triggered is not about being "woke" in this context, but rather a notion of wishing to be “politically correct” - and that is a whole other conversation… The original statement from the Well cited Gill as *one* of the reasons for the removal. I don't believe this was ever the main reason. I think the real issue lies with the trustees not respecting the original esoteric threads that converge at the Well and wanting to “neutralize” it. See Dr. Forester’s open letter. This is one of the most concerning aspects for me. Banishing the statue behind temple walls seems bizarre and reactionary. The decision to move it and their quick-fix compromise seem driven by a place of reaction, not deep contemplation. Furthermore, I continue to ask about the whereabouts of the Blue Bowl, which is deeply connected to the Chalice Well. Its absence is significant and troubling to many who have a spiritual connection to it.

It’s the same everywhere. Some people are wanting to be so political correct that they remove all things that represent Western culture. In this instance it’s a Mother and Child statue in the UK. They don’t want to offend anyone, they say. We all know what those “anyone “ are. There are some narrow minded individuals out there and they are mostly from Muslim origin. I know it’s a sin to say that but it’s the truth. In Belgium most towns and shops have changed Merry Christmas into Seasons greetings, a Christmas fair is now a Winter fair, Easter has become Spring Fest … in Catholic!! schools the crosses are removed from the classrooms, in their workplace people are being nudged not to eat or drink in front of Muslims when they are fasting… all that because some of them find it offensive to have to be confronted with other religious practices. In their religion it is forbidden so everyone else should keep that in account. I personally find it a bit much. I am not a religious person but I am spiritual. So I could also start ranting and complaining about Maria statues in my street… Now it is even getting better. In Brussels there is now a member of parliament that is a fanatical Muslim. He is of opinion that the government should have “a Counsel of Wise Men” to advise them. All religious men like an Imam of course. Maybe people will not be pleased by my writings but I see this culture banning in favour of Islam happening everywhere. It’s happening very quiet but steady.

This reminds me of the controversy around Richard Wagner and his connection to the Nazis. My view is that we can appreciate works of art for what they are regardless of the personal life of the artist. Wagner wrote some of the most sublime music ever and it should be appreciated as just that. Likewise with the mother and child statue.

I am shocked that idols were place in the garden to begin with, the place is sacred to water, not your religious idolatry.

We've all been grown in the water of a womb and experienced life as children. This is what unites us as humans. For me, the statue embodies those truths. Its symbolism transcends religion.

@@pamrobinson4350 And so a sacred well, with the water of life springing from it is not sufficient to your sensibilities? astounding. And so a sacred well must be festooned with religious symbols to make it better. Shame on the Trustees for beginning the destruction of a once sacred place now a home of idols and the fetishization of the spiritual by the ignorant masses. Shame on the sculptor for appropriating the work of another, Eric Gill whose religious views contrast with his deviant sexual behaviour, including, as described in his personal diaries, the child sexual abuse of his adolescent daughters; an incestuous relationship with at least one of his sisters; and also sexual experiments with a dog. Think upon that next time you go out idolizing at the Well.

It was removed because it made Muslim people uneasy. You must be an Islamist.
